looks good, could be more shading on the shirt/shoulderpiece and on the belts....

Thanks man! Yeah the face (1st one was a wip) was made for bmk`s symmetry thread, so I basically only drew one half. The oddnes of the face probably comes more from the messed up proportions/positions.
Thanks

It is a shadowy figure, and it lurks, preferably on badly made stone walls.

nice one, Congrats on the tablet, I see its being put to good use.
You could add a link to the art portal or dumping grounds to show full quality versions.
Its a good thing that ashman said hed be lean with the humanoid this time though, cause its a borderline.

Response to: Bullskechts & others "Art Thread!" Posted March 16th, 2010 in Art

nice shading in the first two, great linework;
the shading reminds me somewhat of Cypressdahlia`s whiteout technique. its cool
I like the second one best, especially the pose and expression, although it could be a bit cleaner.

The linework on the other two is not as cool as in the first two.
the third drawing (dragons) seems a bit of a scrambled collection of seperate objects. although I can now see that the dragons are actually fighting... I think they are abit too different, or maybe too static. composition wise it isnt terribly pretty either, which relates to the static poses.
the fourth one is my least favorite; the linework is not as good as your pencil pieces, and the coloring is of such a quality that it doesnt detract from the drawing, but it doesnt really add a whole lot.
Do you have a tablet? that might make it easier for you to translate your drawing to the pc, it still takes some getting used to though, but its better than mouse.

as for being scoutworthy;
If you had 4 finished drawings in the style and quality of the 2nd one (it doesnt necessarily have to be colored, just a minimal background and make it a full body pic, clean it up a bit), that would make me scout you; at the moment... borderline. I know you will improve so i wont scout you, yet.

But just to make sure: it's not me who's dissatisfied. If it were up to me, I just fail and retry.
I don't mind flaws.

I think the problem here is a communication issue; as you said in of your other posts; your teachers ask you to do something only you would do. I think your teachers might confuse this for style, but I think they really just want you to draw something unique.
Not unique because it is your style, but unique because it is innovative, it pops, it sticks.
That means that you should not be looking for a frame, but rather for something else. actually, and here its gonna be a bitch, maybe you shouldnt be looking for something specific at all.
I think you mentioned "lack of flow" somewhere too. I have to agree with that; I just watched your animation "the penguin and the parrot"; and it is choppy. There is too much time where nothing happens. You used a few cliches; the ugly face close-ups, the sounds, the hanging still in mid air flapping wings, some fonts. I can understand that that would make your teacher long for something more you.
So, I dont know if that helps, but I do agree with your teachers; However, I can offer you some tips.
+ Perhaps you should try to simplify a bit, and focus more on flow. Maybe that could be a good exercise; doing something purely to make it flow. No joke, no nice graphics, just flow.
+ Bad graphics can be what makes something stick; Im sure you know Kabouter Wesley
+ Try not to make an animation too long; in some instances extra time can help, but not always; e.g. in you penguin/parrot animation, it could have been half as short without losing any quality.
+ Be critical of your own work; Kill your Darlings as they call it in filmography and poetry.
Hope that helps, and good luck

I wasnt comparing you to hitler, I was trying to illustrate idiocy of that defence.

yeah i know you dont like me, but screw it,

Honestly ashman, I have nothing against you. Seriously, and Im really sorry I gave you that idea.

you cant let trolls go,

I agree, but standing around them pointing at them doesnt help either, you could just let those that can do something about it handle it, or you could pm someone asking if they could handle it.

if we ignored him, hed have thought hed won, and so he would have kept going,

wrong, by giving him the attention, and the control over the situation he has won.

aweso was just an idiot, he was asking for it, and you know it,

and thats precisely why you shouldnt give it to him.

im not the only one whos doing this but im singled out, i love it.

I considered looking back to find some other names, but I didnt want to make it some witchhunt. I took you as an example because your post illustrated the point I wanted to make.

p.s im doin more art than most people, but yep its ignored

I dont think a discussion about who does more art then who is suited here. For what its worth, I sincerely value the amount of art you produce.

end of rant for me too. sorry for carrying this on, Its not that I want to have the last word or something. I just hate it when Im misunderstood.

come on ben, let us have a bit of fun every now and again, the art side of this forum is going a bit slow at the moment i must admit but itll pick up, it always does

I think that was the literal defense hitler used?

Cmon poeple stop being idiots. The only way to handle a troll is to ignore them and let the poeple who can actually do something about them do their thing. Trolling against trolling will not decrease the trolling. I think the art side is a bit slow at the moment because poeple are diverting attention away from the art side.
And with poeple I dont mean "RLC" or "Aweso", I mean you ashman.

Im not one to go on rants, but this shit just annoys the hell out of me. That you want to vent your against a troll I kinda understand; I dont support it, but I understand. But if someone calls you back on it, just have the guts to be real and admit youre wrong. Dont start with those lame excuses.

Understandable, it was a bit of an asshole statement.
Anyways, I think you do need to keep practicing, but that goes for everyone. I think it would help if you tried to put a bit more effort in your drawings; right now they look a bit like they are hurried scetches. With a bit of extra time, you could clean them up etc, which would make them a lot better.
I also suggest you take a look at the art101 shadingtutorial.
