Noted, changed, and looks a lot different from the original. Though I would like to say that the one-point perspective was the reason why I couldn't do it right (I was fighting the point) so I said "Screw it" and tried drawing, like you said, haphazardly. I realized the drawing I wanted to portray was actually supposed to be a three-point perspective, but I didn't know atm. Either way, I'm doing a two-point perspective now. Thank you, had I not looked-up one-point perspective, I'd never know there were multiple type of perspectives. I did know what a one-point was, but I wanted clarification, and knowledge of how I'd be able to use it without making the picture look distant (the biggest reason why I said "screw it").
So, anyone out there see any room for change on my WIP? I need to know before I start to color it.

I was actually gonna suggest you put the character behind the cube, so good going doing that without my advice! great minds think alike eh?
I'd say, to focus a bit more on the expression, just use the area in the red square (or something like that) so that his face doesn't get lost in the rest of the thing. Also; if you can keep his face/head the lightest part of the drawing, keep the cube a bit in the shadow, that would help draw the eye towards that.

It'll be hard for poeple in continental europe to join if it's any later.

Hi,
I drew you up a quick idea like you requested; the "stomp" part made me think of a footprint so I drew that too.

So which one sounds good?

I'd go for the rubiks cube, while it probably isn't as funny as the others, it's the only one that works without explanation/knowledge of chess.

Definitely zane,
tieing for second place are aigis' one, which is a bit too minimal for my taste, and Kamikaye's, which is, not unlike zane's once, a bit rough & undefined, I just like zane's one better.

I love the lines in this, no big fan of the coloring/shading.
1- if you're going to do out of the lines coloring, use a hard brush, with a soft brush it just looks messy.
2- don't shade with black, instead pic a darker shade of the same color. Shading with black gives murky colors, especially on light areas such as the hair.

Response to: Distinction of a Character Posted April 29th, 2012 in Art

What is your question?

Let me give you some general advice, you can see this as an answer to all your questions; there is no right way in art. What you like is different from what I like, what works well for you is different from what works well for me. The answer to your questions thus is bipartite: 1- there is no definite set answer, and 2- try some stuff, find out what works for you, what you like.

more specifically to this "question"; yeah if you want cartoon characters to be recognizable you need to exaggerate features; you don't have a lot of detail, so you need to maximize what characteristics you have. A cartoon character can be recognizable even if it doesn't actually look like the actual person. I recognize that someone that drew a stickfigure is actually drawing a human being, even if it doesn't look like an actual human at all.

When using as a photo as a reference, the expression on a face is made obvious, how ever recreating it seems to get me. I Cant seem to recreate eyes properly. Now, not realistic eyes - I can do a realistic eye, but its not the style im going for. I want cartoonish, so theres the simple circle with a pupil, a few lines maybe here and there, but tis really hard to determine, which eyes, go best with what expression, and which eyes represent which expression. Any suggestions?

can you give an example of what you've got so far, what emotion you're trying to do, what style you're trying to do?

At the moment, we have nothing to go by and should just trust that it's worth the effort of even contacting you, let alone draw those pictures.

If I choose you, I will include you in the credits and take an idea/feature you want to include in the game as well.

Even if it was just those two examples, this is really VERY minimal compensation. Actually, it's below minimal imo.
I'd say graphics are usually 40% of a game's worth, there should at least be a coauthor and revenue (if any) share for that.

You're welcome, be sure to post more art here in this thread, the forum is usually a better source for feedback than the portal + we like seeing art posted here.
Im eager to see what you make in a more comic-book style (I'm assuming you mean american style comics?), don't move towards that just because it gives you more anatomical freedom though! If anatomy isn't your strong suit, practice and improve it, don't 'run away' from your problems.

At 4/28/12 03:12 PM, pockets08 wrote: I Envy you. <3 love much.

like Pat said, practice. If the envy is more directed towards the being scouted: you might want to delete those photo-drawovers you did from the portal. Even if they are technically acceptable, they are suspicious and don't really help your chances of getting scouted I'd say.

Alright, since I've been so picky and made so many people redo their submissions or not accepted their submissions, I'm guessing you guys are gonna hold me to a pretty high standard. Here's a WIP concept. I am thinking of making a big encompassing background for it. What do you guys think? What is good/bad about it? Which side do you prefer?

Looks good so far, I'd go for the left one with the big bulb. what do you mean by "big encompassing bg"?
