Imagination without skill is perfectly fine; it just isn't art. Skill is how you take an idea out of your head and onto paper or whatever medium you choose. If you don't have proper skill the brilliance of your idea won't come across; if you don't have a good idea to start with the result will, even when skillfully put to paper, not be very interesting.
The value of a work of art originates in the idea behind it; but only through the skill with which it was created.

basta.

No I agree with Vero; the problem, I think, lies in the fact that as he turns to the right (i.e. you get to see his left side) his right leg moves inward. If you were to move the front-left position a bit to the right and the front-right position a bit to the left that should fix it.

although you might need to move some other frames a bit.
Response to: T-Shirt Design could win $100 Posted June 17th, 2012 in Art

I don't really see the big problem; this guy is offering someone money for their shirt designs while he keeps all the risk. It's just that the terms need to be clear. I doubt you'll be able to make 100,- of a tshirt design any other way this easily.

what do you intend to do with these designs? For prize money, $100,- is ok, but if you're gonna make money selling shirts with the design printed on it that changes.

Yes it would; I also suggest looking into some other software for making art; there's a couple of free ones but I hear manga studio (USD 50,-) is pretty good, so that might be a good one if you wanna do manga/anime.

Response to: The works of big-jonny-13 Posted June 12th, 2012 in Art

good to have you posting art again. I do wish you'd post a bit more during semester instead of one big dump at the end and then nothing for 5 months.
Chipping in my p about the shape-shading thingy: If you focus on one shadow like ben suggested try to forget that it is actually the shadow at the bottom of your hand; try to forget it's supposed to be part of a hand alltogether, that way you can focus on solely the shape.
I like face-print one and the one-line headphones; I think you could in general have some darker darks on the ones with tone.

This also applies to people voting down a piece because they //don't// like the subject, but are actually impressed by the art.

nah, what i'm saying is that even if poeple look beyond their opinion; they still don't know quality. The only way to validate someone's criticism is to see if you agree with it; but if that is the case you might not have needed the criticism. And on the other hand someone might have a valid point even if you don't see it as such.

Response to: Art Forum Lounge Posted June 3rd, 2012 in Art

I'd say the main problem with scores has nothing to do with honesty of the voters. It has to do with the fact that quality has nothing to do with wether or not poeple like it; or even wether or not poeple think it has quality.

I'd say that's more of a stylistic way of doing it; one that might not work in a game, detached from the consistent art style it was used in. You could use some white highlights though....

don't use actual black as base color.

Do your worst :)

Those look really good actually, love the knights; some pointers:
- the chess on top doesn't fit with the rest coloring/line-wise
- I'd make the rook's neck a bit wider, and move indentations between the merlons a bit to the sides; so it looks more round.
- I'd make the pawn's collar a bit thicker & maybe sink his head into it a bit more.

I can go to the art portal and thumbnails may refuse to load. I may go to a piece's page and it may not load. I may visit an art thread and half of the images don't load. Dumping grounds? Effectively unusable. Audio portal also has very questionable stability.

I only have this problem with art I view from the unscouted section; for those it helps (me) to delete part of the url:
www.newgrounds.com/art/view/[artist name]/[artwork title]?context=ratings:etm.scouted:.unscouted:1.allow_banned :1.offset:3
Removing everything after the title (?context=ratings:etm.scouted:.unscouted:1.allow_banned:1.of fset:3) makes it load properly... dunno if that's the same problem you are experiencing though.

If you are painting traditionally - you can get paints with the names written on them or get help from friends/family. If you work digitally, colours have codes which you can look up easily. It also tends to give your colouring a very unique style.

I'm not colourblind myself but I find it extremely backwards if a colourblind person would try to find ways around his colourblindness when making art. Why not embrace it and just paint what you see? I'm sure it gives some interesting results, and you're not gonna be able to compensate 100% for it anyway.

At 6/1/12 02:52 PM, Verspar wrote: You know, I've always wonder what you see with colorblindness. I know you can't see a certain color, but what do you see as a result?

It's impossible to get to know that. Usually poeple will be unable to distinguish between red and green; but what colour they do see (red or green or something in between) can't be communicated really.
