At 6/11/05 06:41 AM, FrostyBear wrote: Does someone know something about the asian mythlogies? Or more modern with the legendary samurais and such?

from Chinese mythology:

Ba Xian: Pronunciation: {bah shee-en}
These are the "eight immortals" from Taoist mythology, and among the best known deities in Chinese culture. They are the symbols for good fortune throughout China. They represent eight different conditions of life: youth, old age, poverty, wealth, the populace, nobility, the masculine, and the feminine. The earliest descriptions date from the Tang Dynasty (early 7th century), but their present grouping was not established until the Ming Dynasty (founded in 1368). {The Ming Dynasty is most notable for the artwork.}
The immortals are: Zhang Guo-lao, Lu Dong-bin, Cao Guo-jiu, Zhong Li-quan, Li Tie-guai, Han Xian-zi, He Xian-gu, and Lan Cai-he.
The Ba Xian are a favorite theme of artists and are portrayed on fans and porcelain. They also figure prominently in many literary works.

And for some Dragon Lore from China:

Long-Wang:
Chinese Dragon Kings, mythical figures from Taoism. They are ruled by Yuan-shi tian-zong to whom they submit their reports once a year. They have jurisdiction over funerals and rain. If mistakes or omissions occur during funeral ceremonies, which might result in misfortune for the descendants, the dragon kings are implored for help. Also during droughts they are invoked to produce rain. There are various categories of long-wang. There are the celestial dragon kings, the dragon kings of the four oceans (who live in magnificent palaces at the bottom of the sea), and the dragon kings of the five cardinal points.
Dragons are a traditional sign of good luck for Chinese. Seeing one is considered good luck. The Gods will soon smile on you in other words. I would assume, if you meet a komodo dragon in the wild and he doesn't eat you, it would be very lucky.

I really don't think Fu Xi is a god in Chinese myths, he is a man of mythical legneds perhaps. The stories about him seem to strike me as an Aurther type figure in China. The difference would have to be he taught mankind needed skills whereas Aurther was a brave leader who resuced the English from the Saxons. {Among other things}
Fu Xi was the first of three noble emperors, the "San-huang", in Chinese mythology. According to tradition he ruled from 2952 to 2836 BCE (116 years) or from 2852 to 2737 BCE (115 years). Fu Xi taught mankind many arts, such as the use of fishing nets, the breeding of silk worms, and the taming of wild animals. He also invented music, and, most importantly, the eight tigrams (Pakua), said to be the basis of Chinese writing. Also attributed to him is the invention of casting oracles by the use of yarrow stalks. Furthermore, Fu Xi is said to have invented the one hundred Chinese family names and decreed that marriages may only take place between persons bearing different family names. Fu Xi is represented as a human being with the body of a snake. His wife is Nü-gua. In Taoist temples he is usually portrayed holding a panel on which the eight tigrams are inscribed.
And one godess I will mention;
Xi Wang-mu
The Chinese goddess of immortality and the personification of the feminine element yin. The Taoist Xi Wang-mu is referred to as the 'Royal Mother of the West', and rules over the western paradise of the immortals. She is the daughter of the god Yu-huang and her husband is Mu Gong. Originally she was a terrifying tiger-woman who brought the plague, but under the influence of Taoism she became a benign goddess.
Her nine-stories palace of jade lies in the mythical Kun-lun mountains, near the Lake of Jewels. It is surrounded by a wall of over a thousand miles long and of pure gold. The male immortals reside in the right wing and the female immortals reside in the left wing of this palace. In her garden she cultivates the peach of immortality. This peach tree forms only one peach every three thousand years, which then takes another three thousand years to ripen. When it is ripe, Hsi Wang-mu invites the immortals to a feast to celebrate their birthday and to partake ot the miraculous peach which bestows another lease of immortality.

She is portrayed as a young beautiful woman wearing a royal gown, sometimes riding a peacock. Her favorite animal is Feng-huang, the symbol of immortality and, the Chinese phoenix. Feng-huang has the head and the comb of a pheasant and, the tail of a peacock. It represents the primordial elements of the heavens.

From Japan:
The samurai (or bushi) were the members of the military class, the Japanese warriors.
Samurai employed a range of weapons such as bows and arrows, spears and guns; but their most famous weapon and their symbol was the sword. Samurai were supposed to lead their lives according to the ethic code of bushido ("the way of the warrior"). Strongly Confucian in nature, Bushido stressed concepts such as loyalty to one's master, self discipline and respectful, ethical behavior. After a defeat, some samurai chose to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) by cutting their abdomen rather than being captured or dying a dishonorable death. In 1868, Japan's feudal era came to an end, and the samurai class was abolished.

We have a couple folks at work, their main job is programs and system's analysts but they do all the work at maintaining our web presense. They do flash commercials and such for the site. They are very talented coders but, we buy most of the images they use. I have to review their stuff ten to twenty times to get a feel for it. Same way with reviewing flash here. I keep watching a flash over and over to get a feel for reviewing.
To see XWayne review at a great pace and still be so in depth is just awesome.

Response to: The Reviewers Club Posted June 8th, 2005 in Clubs & Crews

I feel feeble with a mere 153 reviews. *meh*
I was stuck forever at 149 reviews and decided to review all of carmelhadinosaur's flashes which also helped my response rate. Carmel responded to all my reviews.
Most of my responses have been "wow you're really through and in depth" or at least that is thrown in there. lol
My favorite response got deleted. The author complimented me on being the only one to find the easter eggs and notice the details of the flash. I guess I am lucky not to have lost any reviews in the last two mass deletions.
My now favorite response is Bahamut's response. I read it every day. :)
I noticed a couple of XWayne's responses are "OMG you have over 10,000 reviews?" :):):)

This morning I was 3 points ahead of you Tom. Many a flash came in while I was portal browzing so I am still barely ahead of you :) . You, Bahamut7, and I, are all close together in B/P ranks. I started from Dogma's last update and created my own spread sheet and have been updating it daily from about 50 positions ahead to rank 190. I do mine manually so I limit it quite a bit.
Many thanks for the congrats. ANd many congrats to you as well for 9000B/P's.

Response to: how u do collision detection? Posted June 1st, 2005 in Game Development

Is this the same collision detection code used in shooter games where the player 'shoots' a target via mouse click or button click?
If it is, can this collsion detection code cause gameplay to drag really badly when there are lots of targets on the screen simultaneously?

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Most authors, it goes on before the flash is even saved. Maybe its because its your first or something.

Hi everyone. I have been having a lot of internet problems and my daughter downloaded two nasty virus' on her computer so I haven't been around much. I had to tell the cable company to come get everything I was going to DSL with the phone company in order to get a technician out to properly fix everything.
I haven't reviewed anything since May 2, but I noticed a lot of nice new flash coming in and it looks worth reviewing. Hopefully this weekend I will get in the reviewing swing.
Are we still working on improving responses?

Response to: The Reviewers Club Posted May 14th, 2005 in Clubs & Crews

welcome back Master Stalker. The stomach virus thing can be extremely vile. My sympathies to you. Nice list you made up.

I have been having modem troubles with my cable internet and I am waiting on the good folks at the cable company to bring me a new modem. Meanwhile, I have to reset this modem almost daily and then it doesn't do much so the bbs has been out alltogether for me and what little time I do get at newgrounds is spent trying to view a few movies on the portal and logging experience. So far I have gotten my experience in every day.

Hopefully, I will return to a reviewing mood when things get straight with the internet at home.

99% of the people who would view a movie don't know how to use flash. The people that hire digital artists don't always know how to use the tools either. But not knowing how to use the tools doesn't mean you don't know a good movie when you see it. Its a matter of appeal. Things like out of sync voice acting, bad music choices, poorly drawn animation, all are obvious even tho you can't use flash.

Response to: The Reviewers Club Posted May 7th, 2005 in Clubs & Crews

Personally, I think you are the best reviewer on NewGrounds Noir. I have to watch a movie 10 times to get half as many comments as you write for a single review.

Good luck reformatting the PC Bahamut. I think I am going to reinstall mine as well. I have some really funky problems with windows of late. Can't put my finger on the problem.
I really hate reinstalls. They create as many problems as they fix. Makes the registry a mess as well.

As far as reviews, I got slack over the weekend and didn't review any. I have been browsing the listings looking for newer flash where artists could really improve with the right critisim. Thats what I will concentrate on for now. I quit reviewing older flash because I really think the artists have quit looking at the reviews.
