Topic: Garbage Whistle

Posted: 10/23/08 06:16 PM

Forum: Where is / How to?

Maybe you flagged flashes wrongly. If you do this, you lose many whistle points. And remember to give as much information as you can when blowing your whistle on a flash. Also read carefully a review before flagging it, don't just flag everything that is posted on Rage's thread because sometimes things that are not abusive are posted there.

I'm pretty sure you flagged something wrong, otherwise you wouldn't have a garbage whistle.

Have luck getting that normal whistle back!

Sometimes when you search for a term that is less than four characters long, the following pop-up appears.

I've seen it before, it looks like a mistake that the staff isn't aware of, or just don't want to fix.

It's not an easter egg, easter eggs are hidden, like for example if you hold your mouse over the angry face in the forums.

Yup. Also, the score to pass judgment needs to be increased to about this:

100 votes: 1.5
150 votes: 2
200 votes: 2.5

That makes more sense, because most everything under 2.5 is crap.

Well, 2.5 is pretty high, I think the requirement should be 2.00. As I said, that would encourage people to put more effort into what they do, and the voting would be more balanced (0,1,2 are blam and 3,4,5 are save).

And blam points mean something compared to protects? If we blam everything then the opposite will be true.

I didn't say we should blam everything. I think we should vote fairly, and not only 0 or 5.

We could also rise the requirements for a flash to pass judgment, so if it gets 2.00 it gets blammed, and if you vote 2 you get blam points. If 0, 1 and 2 is blam and 3, 4 and 5 is save, then it would be more balanced. We also prevent more shitty submissions to pass.
Not going to happen. 1.6 is good for people who actually make an effort, and raising the passing score by 0.4 will just discourage every day people who are new to flash and want to get work out there.

Discourage people who are new to flash? Don't you thing that it can actually encourage some people to work harder?

Umm..I like my blue aura, and would keep voting 5 just to keep it. Plus then there would be no Fab aura, which would piss a bunch of people off.

Well, that's something interesting. So, supposing more people act like you, then some people would vote according to the aura they want.

Also, it's just a stat guys.
You should be watching flash because you enjoy doing so not B/P'ing just for the sake of stats....
It's a stat, hence why people vote 5 on stuff they know would pass. So the only way to get people to stop voting 5 on everything would be to remove the stat, which would also piss people off.

No it won't piss people off removing the stats. If you think about it, stats were not made to benefit the users. They were made to benefit the site.

If someone has a deity whistle, then she/he flagged submissions/flashes correctly and therefore he/she knows how to use it, and that's why it pulls more weight.

The idea of voting power, is that you've been a lot of time in here and vote correctly, you're supposed to know how to vote, so your vote is more important.

And there's people who don't only vote 5 on things that they think it's going to pass. Actually, many people vote 5 on everything under judgment without even watching it.

It's great to see a thread like this in the General, and see people who worry about it.

Many submissions pass now due to mass voting, and people who don't watch the submissions and just vote 5 on everything.

Spammers many times get their friends to vote on their crappy submissions so they pass judgment. And people who vote 5 on everything should stop doing it. Why do you care so much about getting protect points if they don't mean anything. OK, you may have a better B/P rank (although voting fairly is better) and therefore you have more voting power. But why do you want voting power if it's useless? I remember someone who had 70,000+ saves and less than 1,000 blams...

Today was a weird day...

I woke up sweating, it was hot like fuck (and I can't stand when it's too hot). I went to school, a lot of friends congratulated me, and they hit me a lot too (I don't know if you the same hitting-the-b-day-guy thing in the US). But it wasn't that bad.

About 11:50, it became clouded and very dark. The weather changed dramatically in less than 10 minutes, it was very weird. It became dark and cold, like if it was 21:00, it really seemed like it was too late. Imagine going from something like hot as fuck to very cold. Everyone was freezing (except me, who love/s cold and doesn't almost feel it [that's why I can't stand the hot]). It rained as fuck, it hasn't rained like that for months.

I came home some hours later and it got sunny and hot again, pretty weird. I spent the rest of the day with friends and family.

I had a chocolate cake too.

Topic: Lack of continuity in threads

Posted: 10/21/08 12:41 PM

Forum: General

Yeah, this is an important problem. People just don't read the whole thread before they post, and sometimes they don't even read the opening post. Fuck, sometimes they don't even read the title.

They just find it too difficult to read such a high amount of posts (even though sometimes there are only 4 or 5 posts). Sometimes I feel that we can't blame all the people who don't read, because there are like 5 posts/second (all made by people who don't read), and if you start reading at all the replies, most of them are useless crappy comments. Sometimes going through all of them is just annoying and makes you think that you're wasting your times by reading posts that, in the first place, shouldn't be there.

At 10/21/08 09:27 AM, Shaun wrote: Continuity IS NOT important.

I would much rather see a thread evolve and actually have some discussion that deals with the original point and moves on to related issues.
1. It gets rid of the need to create multiple threads for similar discussions.
2. If someone new reads the thread and has a new opinion of the original post there is nothing stopping them from inputting that opinion and the discussion turning back to the original issue.

Yeah, but then people make a thread, someone says something, like an opinion or an answer, and another person who didn't read that reply just posts the same thing again.

So you only find the same replies repeated all over again, and in the end, you realize that the thread itself is useless and doesn't make any sense. Threads which have a lot of potential several times end like this because of the people who post in it, who don't discuss between themselves.

That's not always true, but some people pay more attention to users with higher levels. But if you think about it, it doesn't make any sense, it just means they have deposited experience more times than certain other people, but that doesn't make them more important or intelligent.

Yeah, since I got modded I find that my posts tend to get responded to a fair amount more than they did when I was just a regular. Just one of those things I guess.

Personally I'll try to respond to anybody who actually says something worth responding to, regardless of level or whatever.

Also, a gold aura attracts people, it's not common and it's very noticeable. They get more reads and therefore more replies.

There are people who just want to catch mods attention too, so they just reply to whatever they say hoping that they'll get noticed. I don't know if they just want to be a mod so they try to get noticed by the current ones, or some other thing.

I also find funny the fact that I quoted a mod and said this.

Well, whether the internet is bad or not, it's something we can't define. It just depends on how you use it. Originally it was not invented to be used as this, it's our own fault.

Video games can be addicting, but that depends on the person. If a player just can't stop playing, it's his fault. Even if you compare it with a drug because sometimes it can be similar, it's not a drug.

If people become dependent of computers then there's something wrong with them, they should live the real life too.

Topic: Regarding high post counts

Posted: 10/20/08 03:16 PM

Forum: General

There are different reasons why someone can have such a high post count.

Moderators, for example, post on topics that other people don't (when they lock it). For example if I see a topic that is extremely stupid, I don't post there, and later a mod will post locking it (unless it's just deleted).

Some people have a high post count because they've been for many years. Look, I usually make about 10 posts a day (sometimes more, sometimes less, but just to use an easy number). If I had been here since 2002, at this rate now I'd have 21900 posts (6 years, 10 posts each day).

And some people are just one liners that don't even care in which topic they are posting, they just post. Usually they make stupid or unnecessary comments, and they get banned many times, but they keep doing so. This kind of posts are useless. I mean, OK, I don't even have 2,000 posts. But I don't care about it because my posting quality is much higher that other people who have 20,000+ posts.

I thinks that's all :D

Yeah, I think you (or someone else) deleted it. I'm pretty sure you can download it from the web...

After a lil' research:
"If you still have your OS disk, you can reload it from that. Just go to the control panel, add & remove programs, and then to add & remove windows components. You will find MS Paint in the accessories and utilities, accessories."

Taken from here.

Cheers :)
