I'm using Firefox 3.5 since two days ago, and yeah there are no numbers in the portal listings. It's a small glitch and I'm pretty sure the admins will eventually fix it.

Thank god they credited Newgrounds and not YouTube!

I also like seeing NG mentioned in other places. It feels like I'm a part of that "cool site everyone's talking about", even if not everyone is talking about it :D

Well, I think that the number of posts doesn't have to be a requirement to join. We are looking for quality, not quantity, and someone may have only a few posts, but if they are good then that's OK.

For example, if I remember correctly, byteslinger only had four posts when he asked to join, and I think that I don't need to say that she deserves to be here. I'm glad we accepted her, and that's a great example of how post count doesn't matter. Just look at her now :D

Basically, we are a club who wants to protect Newgrounds and the portals. We do this by voting fairly, catching all the rule-breaking submissions we can and reporting them if necessary. We want to make NG as good and fair as it can be.

For a more detailed answer, you may want to read The Elite Guard Barracks Manifesto.

I hope that makes more sense ;)

Congratulations to KrevZabijak on becoming the newest Wi/Ht? Regular! :)

I was pretty sure one of you two would make it. Congrats to KrevZabizak for entering the list, and I think Lizzardis also deserves a honorable mention after getting so many votes ;) Keep up the good work and I'm pretty sure you'll be a new regular soon (and the same goes to all the potentials. Just keep it up and one month you'll receive a special surprise).

Congrats to byteslinger, Metal-Therapy and ThePigeonMaster for gaining a rank.
Congrats to byteslinger for gaining over 2,000 total points since last month.
Congrats to LegolaSS for reaching 20,000 total points.

Congrats ;)

I forgot to mention this last month, but the list of Regulars now is completely different to what it was like when I made the first regulars update in 17 months. As a result of iscrulz leaving the Regulars List, the oldest regulars now are 36Holla and kidray76.

I wasn't around then, but it must feel pretty weird to see how things change so much. Meh, I'm just a n00b.

I have it set to always come on in mode 1, so it always start at the max low. This is nice because if you're in the dark and your eyes are adjusted to the dark you don't want the thing coming on real bright and hurt your eyes, ruin your night adapted eyes, etc. The min output is plenty of light to navigate around a dark room, etc. Two quick taps will bump it to the next mode. So I can double tap for a little more light, double tap for even more. If I need the full output all I have to do is press and hold the button and it will go to full output as long as I hold it down. Once I let go it returns to whatever mode I was previously in, such as max low. If I tap then press and hold I get a random strobe which can be used to disorient someone or get someone's attention, or rave.

There is another mode which lets you dim the light up and down to adjust the amount of light you want. You can also have it blink out the current battery voltage, like 3 blinks followed by 8 blinks would be 3.8v. It has circuitry to prevent rechargeable batteries from being over discharged. You can program a variety of strobes, SOS, and beacons, varying their output and frequency.

I didn't know there were flashlights as advanced as that. Some of the features sound cool and they can come in handy, like having several modes, as you mentioned. But it makes me think if such a complex flashlight is actually fully used. I mean, of course they are used, but do people really use and take advantage of all of its features?

I've always thought a flashlight is such a simple object, I wouldn't need so many modes and stuff like that as long as it can light a room when the power goes off. But anyway I'm not into flashlights and I rarely use them, but do you consider all of these features necessary? I would just think that most of them are there to "show off".

There are some things that could be better, but it's hard to find one flashlight that is perfect in every way, but so far this comes the closest for what I want. Everyone has their own preferences like anything else.

What would you consider to be a perfect flashlight? You already said what you look for (size, features and UI), but which is the perfect combination? Also, how much would you be willing to pay for a good flashlight?

Sorry for so many questions, but it's what came to my mind after reading your posts :/

I realise that the rules are important if you just want to enjoy your time here like you should, but I think looking around and learning about the place is important too. I think regulars should steadily drop the typical attitude when seeing a post by a new user, a post that is perfectly fine and discussing a perfectly acceptable topic. In an extreme case, I think it would be better for some regulars and mods to be less "hilarious" and "badass" when it comes to new users. Again, I'm not suggesting you let all new users get away with murder, but I'm saying that we're intelligent enough not to be overly hateful with them. Maybe I'm being a little optimistic... users that blatantly break the rules should be banned for it, but a lot of people aren't that bad. Eh, I'm just this little inexperienced kid I suppose.

So you're saying you're more of a lurker. That's OK, lurking the forums before posting is something that every new person should do, and there's even a rule that says "lurk first, post second". A good think to do is to lurk the forum and read the threads even if you know that you won't post on them. That way you'll be able to see how things work and get used to it. If you see "User A" gets banned after posting something, then you'll learn that you shouldn't post that. And it also works the other way around, you'll learn that something is good if you see someone getting praised after doing it. It's common sense, actually.

And I agree with you, sometimes mod shouldn't try to be "funny" or "badass". In the end it seems to be a competition to see who's the most funny or who's tougher, and that's why I said that mods could be a bit intimidating. Again that's why lurking is important. You'll see some mods doing this constantly and then you'll learn that's more of a "joke" (which, by the way, stopped being funny a while ago.

This was a serious post bought to you by Serious Scarab of Serious Scarab's Serious Shop. Remember, you can't be serious unless you're seriously serious.

What the hell, I just didn't get what you just said lol

I think that if a new user is scared at the mods, or any other user, it's mainly his/her fault. While I also think that mods can be a bit intimidating (locking threads, banning people), they won't do anything bad to you unless you do something bad. And when I say "unless you do something bad", I'm obviously talking about the rules. You're supposed to read the rules, and you even check a box saying that you read them and that you will abide them.

At 6/29/09 06:30 PM, Dobio wrote:

When you click that little thing that confirms you've read the rules, you agree to abide by all the rules that you 'supposedly' read. It's not the moderator's fault if you say you read and understood the rules and then knowingly broke them. :)

^This. A responsible user (or at least someone who really cares about not being banned), should know what to do and what not to do. And all of this is listed in the rules. So a person who has a complete understanding of the rules would never be afraid of posting, because he/she would know what to do in order to remain unbanned.

Now, if a new person doesn't have a complete understanding of the rules, mods are here to help, aren't they? A single PM is enough, and most mods would be glad to help (and glad to know that someone actually cares about the rules).

So that's why I think that it's people's fault to feel scared. If someone feels scared, then read the rules, and learn what you can/can't do. Then you'll see that there's nothing to be scared of.

Hm, this makes me wonder if everyone in the Barracks is reasonably aware of basic precautions one should use with their computers/browsing. Considering that the nature of the EGB is to go up against abuse, often malicious abuse made by malicious people, I would hope so.

If anyone has any questions about malware detection/elimination, or how to browse safely, don't just sit in the dark and hope nothing bad ever happens---ask up and learn to defend yourself. There will always be nasty shit that can break even the most powerful security, but taking even basic precautions (which can be easily done solely with free software) can protect you against the vast majority of malicious programs, and limit the effects of the stuff that gets through your safety nets.

Well, since this was brought up, I thought it was a good idea to tell you guys that you can go to the computer hospital if you ever have any trouble with your computer. Also, in the first page you can find a long list of useful, free software to protect your computer.

Personally, I use Nod32 and ZoneAlarm. I have never had any problem since I started using this great combination. Nod32 spots all malicious things, and the great thing is that ZoneAlarm tells you whenever any internet page or program is trying to establish a (potentially harmful) connection with your computer, and you can choose to deny that connection. I also have Spybot Search and Destroy to scan my computer periodically, and CCleaner to clean my computer (it also comes in handy to remove programs that I don't use anymore). I used to have Ad-Aware but as I stopped using it after I last formatted my computer.

I have never submitted anything to any of those contests, and I think that I'll never do it. Not that I don't like them, but I'm just not a very creative person. If I wanted to write something decent, I wouldn't even be able to come up with a single good idea. Besides, English is not my first language, so I don't stand a chance against the more experienced writers of Newgrounds.

Anyway, I like reading the entries every now and then when I have nothing to do. Especially at the end of every month when the winners are announced, I go to the entries thread to read the best stuff. Not only I enjoy the reading, but it can be a somewhat good way to learn some useful vocabulary.

Sketch usually refers to quick, non-finished drawings.

Quoted from Wikipedia:
"A sketch (...) is a rapidly executed freehand drawing that is not intended as a finished work."

You can submit sketches, but don't make them public (so they only show up in your userpage and not in the main Art Portal).

There is no legal way to download Flashes from NG. Either you download the flash you want from another website, or do it illegally.

You mean 07 redesign, right? Tom mentioned something about a redesign in the future... Let me find the post...

(After checking Tom's last posts).

There are several mentions of a new redesign in this thread. The following are all quoted from Tom's posts:

"Stamper is saving the pretty for the redesign"(after someone mentioned the current wide layout was ugly).

"The Art Portal will DEFINITELY be included in the redesign, as it is launching well before it. The Lit Portal is more in question at the moment, although it is definitely coming. We're only so many people. :("

"There will be lots of adjustments in the redesign."

"For those of you who don't like the results of the related content, this is not the final algorithm so hold-tight. We will also be re-examining the placement of this in the final redesign."

The best thing you can do is going to Tom's posting history, and ctrl+f "redesign", lol.

But there are still good games which are only for PC! Starcraft 2, for example, is going to be one of the best games of our time, and it will be out for PC only. I use my pc for gaming, but only when it comes to old good gems.
