OK, good. Once your Ads are approved you'll start seeing Ads on the placeholder when you test your Movie (You won't get money from this of course :P). You can submit your movie at this point. But before you do, activate your Movie. You can activate it now if you want as long unless you plan to change the name or want to delete it from the API records.

As for the preloader, you can use the Preloader + Ad-Sticker or if you want to make your own preloader, just use the Ad-Sticker.

No, not the name of the file. The name of the title when you are submitting it.

And where would I find the Ad sticker / preloader? Is it in the file I downloaded containing the API code?

Yes, it is in the .zip. Check the .fla, it should be in the library. There is one with the sticker & preloader, and one with just the sticker. But you must use one of them; how else are the Ads going to show?

Seems messy.

Another is to create a base class, and then in the class have a variable that stores/manipulates any clip that you pass in.

Yeah, I saw that method here. I just don't know how to properly input the base class in Symbol property dialog box. Which I search for now.
