Correct, 3.5 caps is not enough, but I wasn't trying to get FUCKED up, I just wanted to sample this batch. I had to go to work tonight, I don't think they'd be very happy if I came in tripping shrooms.

Okay, something is fucked up.
I've lowered the Jpeg quality, I've changed the sound from 24 to 16, I've set it to compress, and deleted unused symbols, no filesize change.

Then, I went back and UN-checked compress, and it was still the same filesize.

Is there something on my computer that doesn't update the filesize of shit? Windows Xp, wtf is going on?

Well thanks, all I got was a blank box without any text when I exported, but I appreciate you trying to help. I wonder, maybe, do I get filesize from things in my Flash I'm not even USING? Because I imported like a billion sounds but ended up only using one, do the other ones still make my filesize huge?

Yes, it's over 10 MB. And I've tried compressing it, but it's 23,000 KB even when I try that. ( 20.3 MB )

Hey there, I don't have any submissions, and I'd like to submit a Flash I made, I think it's really good, but the problem is that it's also HUGE. So, what can I play around with in Publish Settings or anything else to make it like 10 MB smaller?

Xml without Php? Yes, you could do it, but I can't imagine why you would.
Flash isn't a great program for WRITING either, usually you do something like this in Dreamweaver or a similar application, then import it to Flash.
Perhaps you could explain more of why you are trying to write XML without PHP, so I can help you better. I can't imagine why you would need one without the other.

If you need help importing XML or PHP files into Flash, let me know.

If you're looking for a better program to write either of these in, Google "Adobe Dreamweaver".

Well, Flash has filters built in that you can use to get cool effects. To use these, though, your object has to be a movie clip or text. So first, convert your objects to movie clips. (If you need help on this, let me know.)
Then, at the bottom in your Properties panel, (if there isn't one, go Windows > Properties), there should be a tab that says "Filters". Click this tab, then click the little plus sign.
From here, there should be a whole bunch of things for you to have fun playing around with, but you're gonna want to select the "Blur" option. Then you can go about customizing how far you want it blurred, 1 px means that the blur effect will be one pixel, 10 px means it will be ten pixels of blur (alot).

And from there, you should be able to tween from 0 px blur to 20 px or so blur and get the desired effect.

Alright man, I've got some pretty good Flash on my computer, I wanted to submit one recently but my filesize was WAY over the Newgrounds limit. I'll have some Flashes up soon, but I realize it's hard to test my legitimacy when I don't have any submissions.

Smoke, eh?
Well, I would draw multiple gray clouds and then set them to graphics, Object > Convert to Symbol > (Check Graphic), then at the bottom on the properties panel, I would set it to "Alpha", to make it transparent, 0% would make it invisible, and 100% makes it entirely visible.

So for smoke, somewhere around 50%-70% alpha.

Then, I'd use motion tweens ( I'm assuming you know how to do that ), to rotate the smoke and have it go from 60% alpha to 0%, to create the effect that it is rising and fading away. This is a pretty neat method I use, but there's LOTS of ways to go about this.

If this smoke looks too "cartoony" for you, you could do it FBF (Frame by Frame) and draw out each idividual part of the smoke's flow. But this is time consuming, and if you're not a good artist, may look like crap.

I'd also recommend going on YouTube and looking at videos of smoke, and watch it for patterns. Smoke is pretty hard for beginners to animate, so keep practicing. If you upload a video or flash you made of smoke, I can get a better idea of what you could improve on.

A simpler way might even be to, instead of adding a new layer, group the guy that you're trying to animate. (Ctrl+G) Chances are, the building is grouped and the guy isn't, or they're both grouped and the building is just arranged to be in front of the guy.
If they're all on the same layer, the guy is grouped, and it STILL isn't working, then click the guy and go Object > Arrange > Bring to Front.

There ya go, keep animating!

Hey there, I'm a decent artist and a marvelous animator, but I have problems with character design alot. For me, the hardest part of making a story is thinking of a character, then I usually build the story around him/her.
And sometimes when I design characters they look like something that's already been made.

Anyone have any tips on how to design characters?
I'd greatly appreciate it!

Yes, what you're doing wrong is probably not using layers.
To fix your problem, put the "guy" on a NEW layer and the building behind it.

So here's how you might approach doing so:
Step 1) Make a new layer. This is done by clicking the little symbol with the piece of paper and a plus sign, it's located right below your layers, for you it should say "Layer 1", then when you add a layer, there should be Layer 1 and 2.
Step 2) Copy (Ctrl+C) the guy from the first layer and delete him. Now paste (Ctrl+V) the guy on Layer 2, which should be above Layer 1. If you did everything correctly, the guy should now be on top of the bui9lding, and you can animate him however you like.

Alright guys, I'm on year 4 of flash, and to be honest, I know the in's and outs of every part of it, except I'm working on understanding actionscripting a bit more.

Anyway, as long as it's not an AS problem, I'm here for troubleshooting for about the rest of the night! Anybody having any problems, I work with Flash 8 and Flash MX so I can almost positively find out what you're doing wrong.
