3.93 / 5.00 4,634 ViewsConcepting a shopkeeper. I realised recently that shopkeepers kind of have this really easy potential to be a favourite character. People LIKE buying things in game shops, so as long as your merchant's smiling and has enough lines of dialogue then they'll probably grow on you. Also they exist outside of the gameplay and game's story but IN the game world, so they can be a fun source of conversation, and sometimes hints.
The amount of good a shopkeeper can do, when I think about it, is actually kind of daunting. I basically have 100% free reign to come up with one now, and it can be anything. So the image below is me splashin around some characters.
So far I've really stuck on the idea of an overly jovial foreign merchant who only knows a handful of phrases in English, and they are all vague compliments to get you to buy things. If you toy around long enough he WILL give you outrageous discounts, that could be a really fun character.
My twitchy conspiracy theorist guy could actually be funny if he gave you hints to in-game secrets.
It's kind of difficult to nail something down here cos it's SO open.
Now that is one hilarious typo.
Get outta that way!!!!
Designing some smaller sattelite ships to populate that scene. I came up with those first black n white designs by literally scribbling onto a page, and then filling it out into whatever shape I saw. That was fun, I should do that more in future.

Just incase you were wondering what this might look like. When I make it in 3DSMax it looks pretty good, but then I build it in Unity and the lighting's all dumb, the colours are all wrong, and the normal maps are super low-res and chunky. It's difficult with stuff like this.
I'm gonna add some small ships zooming around, and have a more cohesive transition between these two scenes. Also, obviously, there will be enemies.
I REALLY HATE THAT THIS FORUM DOESN'T HAVE AN EDIT BUTTON, that first sentence is supposed to say "my first 3D game".
One of the reasons I'm making a scrolling shooter as my first game is that everything's very small. The guy you play as and the enemies are like half an inch onscreen, and you can't get any closer to em cos obviously you have no camera control.
So my weakness of being a really inexperienced modeller doesn't really show through much.
Here's this ship. It's pretty plain, maybe I'll come back to it, but right now this is it. In this level you fly INTO IT, so I will have to zoom all the way in at some point.
I just made a game system that creates a map grid, randomly fills it with buildings, glues any walls that're too close together, beziers corners, and draws main roads between random points. Then I pasted a car into it and flash crashed and I didn't save :(
aaaaaaaaaa I was probably kiddin myself if I ever thought that could make a map as fun as doing one by hand.
This again. I have never tried to draw this kind of thing, and it is NOT FUN!
I drew that spaceship again. UGGH how do people actually enjoy drawing these things! It's still a few bits n pieces away from being a good usable concept, but better than the first one.

Flipping the script, I basically took a regular enemy and packed him down into a lil ball. He looks kind funny with his arms n legs too big for his body, and I think I'm a fan of that. It's an awkward and dumb design, but maybe this game needs more awkward n dumb designs?
The circuitry is from my looping circuitry texture I used before.
I mentioned before that I was visually re-designing all the enemies to be these white-blue cop robots.
In the picture below I'm drawing an enemy who has a giant shield and a punching attack, and another enemy who inflates and explodes.
The bottom half is something I'm struggling on, because there's no police-technology analogue to a guy who flies in and blows up. Also how do you make something made out of metal and mechanics INFLATE over time?
I thought of like re-arraging pieces? Or like a Hoberman sphere? I can't get it to look good though.
I COULD post 3D models here, but they're not very exciting, they're really small and basic approximations of the art. I'm not super experienced at 3D modelling.

This is black n white because I started off just doing the sihlouette, and then after 10 minutes I found out that Photoshop had noticed I was drawing in gray, and switch to 100% only gray mode. Which is kind of a funny feature.
Like-- Photoshop is all like "oh you like black n white so much why dont ya just marry it!!!!!!!! UUHHHHHHH!!!!"
Anyway this came out as a really boring shape (rectangle) so I should probably do it again.
Hey art forum! I've never posted outside of the Flash forum, and I don't really consider myself a good artist, but this can only help, right?
Long-story short I'm making a 3D scrolling shooter, and it's gonna take like a year, and I'm gonna sell it at the end. I guess you can read up on it here. I'm really doing much much much more pre-production work than I usually do on this, and that means generating a lot of pictures of WHAT THINGS MIGHT LOOK LIKE before I dive in and make them. Also I "discovered" Photoshop about 3 months ago, so I'm in this whole new possibility space of digital paintings now that I always thought would be out of my reach.
So I'll update this thread whenever I make a new landscape or character design or something. You can see some already on that page.

This is the first art I got to the front page. It basically communicates what I want boss fights to feel like, and what kind of colours I going for. Loads of glowing lights, no dark black, painting space as this tropical-punch lookin backdrop. That's an adjusted photo of the horse-head nebula.
Looking at the game right now, I'm somewhat sad it's not as ridiclous as this. This is a metal T-rex head in a basketball jersey, dunking a planet. Having letterboxing that bosses would overlap was a big idea early on aswel, I'm glad I'm bringing up all this old art now.
I decided I should draw something that's not just "in space". The point of all these images is so I don't get halfway through...
This background was built in 3DSMax, and I found out later that making things look like that in a game engine is a tonne of coding work and is WAY more difficult than just moving sliders around. This is partly to show an enemy you typically wouldn't see in a "bullet hell shooter". Read up on the game if you're actually interested in how it plays.
CHARACTERS
Chet Jetset Jr. Jr. - I have this character who's a self-serious celebrity hero, but is actually a tantrum baby when you get to know him. His backstory is that he comes from a long line of aggressively successful champions, and that now the world is in peace and he's juts a figurehead.
Bear art. You play as a bear in a space-mech suit. I actually landed on this, but I bet I'll come back to it.
Earth's Robot Forces - I had a bit of an identity crisis when I decided that "space-egyptians" was a boring, played out theme. So I re-designed everything as "space-cops". I THINK it's a more fun direction?

This came out looking more godly than I intended, but hey man, bonus.
Would it look like this? This was a practice in drawing circuitry. It's actually really easy once you've figured it out.
This is all a really brief catch-up on the art I've bin doing over the passed 6 months. I COULD go really in-depth into all of these, but noone's gonna read a post this long. So stay tuned as I update and comment on what I'm doing in real-time. I'll be drawing more scenes as I HOPE they might appear in the game.
Again, I REALLY HOPE THE FORUM DOES A GOOD JOB OF EMBEDDING THESE LINKS!!!!
Well fuck, absolutely none of these got rendered as thumbnails, and the Newgrounds forum doesn't have an edit or lock or delete button. So that's an awesome start.

Wow this light thing looks really accurate and capable. How come people like you only ever make prototypes and not games!?
NEWGROUNDS IS THE PEOPLE'S GAME SITE.
The funny thing about Out There Somewhere being a lonely experimental thing is that I DID NOT put that much thought into it.
You see games like Time Fcuk or Don't Look Back or whateve other game based on authentic real-life experience, and I could never make a game like that, cos I just feel like it'd come off so corny and transparent and dumb.
So Out There Somewhere is a fake art game, and I'm about as emotionally invested in it as I am in Robot Dinosaurs.
Which launches into a seperate discussion, assuming this was a bigger game I spent more time on. How important is authorial intent? Does it make my work any better, or more impressive, or does it push games as a medium, or am I any more proud of my work to squeeze that reaction out of people?
Not really.
That's basically the thought process I have whenever I wanna make an art game and decide not to.
I had fun making a game that's that minimilistic though.

Yeah I've actually teamed up with LenkoBiscuit before who is a WAY better artist than me, I started a game with Luis, and I THINK I made a game with Ansel and they all dropped out, so I don't join teams any more.
Thanks I always aim for my asshole to be as ticklish as possible.
Yea this is my first game jam, I never entered those Tigsource ones.

I could have spent my weekend milking Second Wind for all its worth, instead I decided to have some fun :P
Honestly, I think my team did an outstanding job, and though we aren't/never can be AAA development, it was a good run.
I think I'm/other people are upset simply because it's just a wee bit demoralizing, simply put, no... I don't have the time/resources to pump out games on the level of those who do this for a living. It's kind of like competing any fighting game against Capcom, you know? They'll always have the upper hand, you'll always be the Niche.
I think the bar's pretty high, and that's a good thin, but there's a point where the differences just aren't realistic, you know?
My game is Flash 8, Actionscript 2, it has 2 sound effects and it's made out of circles n squares. The snow is me scribbling white onto a transparent PNG, I'm not even using crazy Glaeil bitmap effects.
I actually looked up a game I used to be annoyed about last week, it's Tails Cosmic Rush. This game's stuck in my memory and I can't remember why, I think it really pissed me off back when I was 15. This is around the time I released Cannoncrotch and Crunchdown, which were 2 really old games I made, and it probably pissed me off that this 100% bullshit Sonic game was getting awesome reviews and like high votes n stuff. That used to annoy me, years ago, that Mario Falls of A Cliff would get a million views; so the fact that people who live on Newgrounds who've got good from years of just doing it are getting the same shit is fucking annoying.
If Glaeil was in this game jam, and fuckin Ed McMillen, Egoraptor, Jonny Utah, The Swain was here, fuckin HappyHarry and whoever else, SouljaBoy.newgrounds.com; this wouldn't be the worst game jam ever, it'd be the fuckin best.
It's not BAD that there was an already-formed game team entering, it's bad that there aren't MORE of those.
Also: third point on this list, you can all out-design Jazza. No offense to him, cos I watch his tutorials and I read his blog n stuff, but actually designing a game that's fun to play is his achiles heel, this game is fuckin slow and boring and tedious, it's one note repeated and stretched out, and so was his last game jam game. No offense, again, but I'm saying squares n circles can fuckin TROUNCE this- I spent 2 hours on my entry!
Fuckin point number 56: Game Jams aren't contests, they're just there to give people an excuse to make something quick n put it out, because making games takes too long. Power of 3 was explicitly about encouraging people to cross-communicate on Newgrounds, and spoilers: That's the point of all of these.
In future I hope MORE teams like this enter, and I hope more good-looking games come out of it. If I have to spend the whole 48 hours on the next one to be that guy then I'll do it
On the other hand, just to throw a bone to everyone: I did open this game, and the first thing I said was "oh man this is pretty unsportsman-like to bulldoze over everyone!" but- like that's funny as a joke, but the actual conversation of what's best for everyone, having solid teams entering the game jams is totally what is best for everyone.
I KNOW it feels like there's this division between "those guys have made it n I haven't" and I could write a whole essay about that cos I've been here since like 2004, but this post is long enough already so the short version is that that's actually a massively good thing and it's a huge catalyst for all the best things about Newgrounds.
Also this is my first time entering a game jam, and it was really awesome to make something I'd never usually make.
I'd never get a game about getting lost in snow sponsored, or sold, or anything to make it actually worth making.
Also so far Tom was the only person who got what was going on in this game.

I hope Tom at least front pages other games...
HEY hey hey hey hey- My game for sale fucking stinks, and nobody likes it, and nobody bought it. I'm still ON Newgrounds.
I can't be too bad to win anything for years, and then be disqualified from things as soon as I'm actually good at it.
Also Newgrounds is a flash game site above everything else, they get like ten times as many views as anything else so on that point you're bein straight-up cray-cray.
