*lol* Hey, no problem.
It's good to know someone appreciates us!
Funny thing is...I'm finding it easier to espress my opinions HERE than it is around my friends.
I'm American. German and mutt by heritage. But when one of my friends found out I went to demonstrations?
He called me a "French f*ggot".
I was very disappointed, and moved on.

Who said you have to be black?
Where did the word 'cool' come from, as slang?
Or 'awesome'?
Or 'dude'?
Do I have to be a cowboy on a Dude Ranch to say 'dude'?
Do I have to be a surfer to say 'awesome'?
And do I have to sell ice to say 'cool'?
Nah. :) I'm actually just giving you a hard time. But I don't think slang is really divided by race. That's all!

I'm annoyed with our society.
You know...it's funny. I'm asked that all the time. For the most part, I'd say no. I'm not. But I have so many eccentric views that I refuse to put myself in any category.
I believe in a lot of freedoms that we either don't have yet, or we have and are threatened. Gay marriages, medicinal marijuana, death with dignity. But at the same time, my life is very faith-based. Not religious, though. I don't care for religion. My relationship with Christ is very personal.
Our society, however, could use a bit of a conservative touch. I just heard that my old highschool just implemented a dress code that bans mid-drift shirts and halter tops and baggy pants that'll show off underwear. I think that's great! I think it's high time that our children stop selling sex.
...I'm just a muddle of beliefs, Commander. *lol*
Dun dun dun dun DUN DUN! Dun.
Good guys. They look so god damn like the same person. I would say to them, "you want ice cream cone?" Both of them say yes. How in the hell?!
I want to play it! It's called Mario Twins. They look the same!
Okay, so I had to watch the freakin' movie to see if I got the line right. I didn't.
BUT NOW I DO!
Technically, it's...
"Uh..."
"Wrong!"
Anyway. *lol*
Got a super 88 system at Chunky's for two dolares. It comes with game.
And yes, I'm seriously a chick. *lol* I take pride in how I present myself, and I think my age helps. I'm 25. So I'm not like a lot of the younger girls on this site that just want to get the attention of the guys.
I'm also a journalistic writer.
And I went to college. You can't be a schmuck there! *grin*
Thanks for the compliment, tho! No offense taken at all, I know you weren't being sexist.

I'm gonna assume by your name that your a guy. :)
Have you thought that maybe YOU could have that talk with him? He might be a little more open to talk to 'big bro' about stuff like that, rather than his mom. You know how boys look up to their older brothers? He might just appreciate it. :)
Honestly, you should think about it. Tell your mom you're going to do it, and sit him down, ask him what he knows, what he's curious about, and let him have it. Depending on how old he is, don't go TOO much into it, but explaining puberty might be nice. And sex, in the simplest terms.
Maybe instilling some sort of respect for it. I don't know. But it might be better than waiting for your mother to do it, if she's reluctant even after she's seen him on the sims and stuff.
There's also books out there. Good books. I'm sure, if he's played the right sims, that he's seen graphic stuff with the...y'know. Genetalia. But puberty is a rough thing for a lot of kids to go through. I can't tell you how many kids I hear around this city, AND online, that are in the midst of an awful puberty, and think it's clinical depression. Seriously. It's...frustrating.
Good luck! *lol*

First of all...yeah. Don't dis the 80's glove. ;) The 80's glove is the best! *lol*
Second, I just wanted to post here and thank you all (most of you, I guess, since I didn't go through the entire 4 pages to see who's posted) for not being idiots. *lol* It's so...nice. Especially on NG. To be able to post somewhere and not feel like my words are just sorta...floating over the reader's heads and making them stare blankly at the screen, like I've written in Aramaic, or some other dead language.
Anyway. :) You're all fun to post with. That's all!
I used to be a regular here, a while back. I wouldn't post anywhere else, really, but it happens off and on. I leave for a time, come back, yadda yadda. It was neat to come back this time and see things had improved even more!
It's honestly impossible to give a blanket assumption about when a child is ready to hear that stuff. Every child grows and learns at different speeds. Some are slower or not interested, others are precocious and listen to everything...hear snippets...and ask questions.
It's changed all throughout time, if you think about it. Back in the day that girls got married and started having babies at 13. What about then? I'm sure not EVERY parent was shy about sex. That was mostly just social cover-up. It's fluctuated off and on, from the ability to be more open, to prudence.
Now? Parents are becoming a little obsolete in that area. How many 8 year olds are on NewGrounds? How many 8 year olds look at the fucking hentai movies that are submitted? How many of them click on the porn banners? And how many come into forums like this one and listen to the adults talk about penises and vaginas and breasts and all sorts of body parts? They learn on their own, and they learn in the wrong way.
I have a feeling that's why we have so many 8, 9, 10 year olds running around calling them 'tits' and 'pussies' and all that. They hear it on tv, the internet, everywhere...they don't know the real names for them, it seems.
Me? I was in first grade. I was too smart for my own good, and my teacher was pregnant. I asked my mom where babies come from, she told me. When a parent tells a child about sex, it doesn't have to be about the pleasure or the details. Just the basics at first. Don't dump a whole shitload of stuff on a kid all at once.
MY problem was, I went to school, and raised my hand, and announced VERY LOUDLY that babies come from THE VAGINA!
*snicker* Never saw a teacher turn so red.

You haven't seen the BBC coverage. From 7am (apparently, I don't wake up 'til, like, 10) to midday, it's WAR: LIVE!!! And still the BBC is counbting Blair as some big mover and shaker, and actually airing his drivel, despite the fact it's as far off the mark as the average US missile strike. £5 a hospital or residential area is hit by next Thursday.
I won't bet. ;) Because I agree, and we'd be up shit creek if it happens. We'd be making the same bet! *lol*
What next; a celebrity panel, utilising all the latest technology, otherwise known as a light pen? I can see it now:
"Look at the trajectory of that missile, that is perfect aim, directly into that large building which is believed to be a Government compound, even though it looks like a residential block..."
Oh, probably. I don't mind celebrities voicing their opinions, in fact...I'm all for it. But they try to be politicians, and think that because they're all famous, their opinions are more important, or count for something more. Yay for free speech! BOO for actors that don't know what the fuck they're doing trying to play commentator and poli-sci expert.
This war is rapidly turning into a money machine, just like everything else does.
This is military conflict, not football. A little differentiation people!!!
AMEN BROTHA!
First of all, I'd like to think that there's a less offensive word than 'wigger' that can be used. I HATE the word it originates from, and it's not any better.
Second, it's a change in society, period. It's sad, but it happens, and to be honest? I can't help but think it's parents slacking off. Not ALL the time, obviously...there's several that just do what they can, and their kids get out of control...but more often than not, the parents just chalk it up to 'Kids being kids.' NO! It's not just kids being kids! They're hurting people, either with words, or with actions...
I'm annoyed with our society.

Heheh, that's actually a rather fitting name for them.
It disgusts me to see what sort of image the recent pop divas have created for our young girls. It's impossible to stop celebrities like Britney and Christina from growing up, though. They aren't dressing any differently than other female celebrities. They are, however, rolemodels for these girls...when is where I believe the parents are at fault. Where the FUCK do these kids get these clothes? How could their mothers LET THEM DRESS LIKE THAT?? Gah.
That being said, Avril Lavigne. I don't like her music, I don't like -her-, her attitude, and she's just...not someone that I'd admire. I did, however, watch the Grammys and the interview they did with her. She said something that I respected. She refuses to sell sex, and dress like a whore. She doesn't feel like it, she won't do it. It's not her.
Lets hope she doesn't grow into it like Britney did. Silicon is the death of innocence.
Even if I don't like her music, I'd much rather have MY daughter dressing like HER, rather than the other sleazy bitches. If I had a daughter. Y'know. Just an example.

FOXnews Channel, or, i believe, foxnew.com, is an excellent source of relatively unbiased news. in fact, a lot of the information that i gather is directly from there. MSNBC and CNN and the like usually put their own agendas in the news. FOXnews is the best i've seen in quite some time.
That's actually what I've been watching, for the most part. I don't have a problem with the coverage they're giving me tonight about the protest I had to leave early, or the war coverage for the most part. But I don't like the media in general, because they feed into the culture of fear. Violent crime goes down? Coverage of it goes WAY up. Violence sells papers and gets ratings.
UN resolution 1441 made it quite clear that Iraq disarm its arsenal of WMD and any ballistic missles with a range farther than 95 km i believe. iraq has, in fact, fired a SCUD missle with a range of 400 km at a US military installation in the Kuwaiti desert shortly after the initial bombs were dropped. that means they are in material breach of the UN resolution with little cooperation as even Hans Blix, who is openly against war, has said. in fact the Iraqi regime had since 1991 to disarm itself completely. the US is right on the moeny when they say that the Iraqis won't disarm without a swift kick to the ass.
I agree with that, for the most part. I HATE war, because it's scary and it kills. But I refuse to be the type that's against war at all costs.
My stance: The military action we're taking is, technically, not about disarming anymore. The stated goal is regime change, which is ouside the reach of resolution 1441.
as for the Constitution, checks and balances is in worder. either the Congress or the Court must decide on whether or not the President can wage war without an official declaration by Congress. However, no arguement has been made to the unconstitutionality of it.
I think the issue of it being illegal has been ignored because of the repercussions it could have. Congress hasn't approved this war, and since Congressional approval is mandatory according to the US Constitution...I feel it's pretty illegal. That's just this country, however, and not international law. BUT! It's not been approved by the UN or NATO, and we struck first.
...technically? All that put together? That would make Bush and his buddies war criminals.
Unfortunately, the Korea thing is just too much for me to comprehensively debate at midnight. *lol* I don't like Bush at all, I don't trust him, I don't think he's doing a very good job, but that's the beauty of humanity. The differing beliefs make everything so interesting. I do appreciate that Bush surrounded himself with people smarter than he is, and that was a good move. But I just don't feel like he's right for this.
I'll end this post with my favorite quote:
"Any people whatsoever have the right to abolish the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right -- a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world."
- Abraham Lincoln, 1848
Update! *lol*
Probably not a riot, thank God. But arrests have been made and all. Percussion grenades fired.
There's a group in the middle of Burnside that won't move, and will likely be arrested. Some already have been, others plan on being.
Honestly, there was a leaflet passed out saying what the objective was. Ultimately, it was to 'shut down the city' for a time, to get the attention of everyone possible. With a blockade and sit-in planned, they also gave tips on what to do if we were arrested. Don't fight. Don't resist, don't hit, don't whatever. Be peaceful.
It wasn't a very organized demonstration, and there were a LOT of differing views there. The blockade? Actually, the street was already closed down, because of the march. We just sorta...stopped there. They didn't let us stop other places, which frankly? Didn't make sense. Burnside is like the vein of down town. I have a feeling that was also for the anti-corporation movement, which really isn't my priority.
That was where we were centered, yes, but there were groups all over the city, spread out, demonstrating. Apparently, all sorts of stuff happened that I hadn't heard about. I was hoping that everyone there would get that VIOLENCE doesn't protest VIOLENCE...but there were a few idiots that didn't agree. They started a fight on the Steel Bridge, knocking over some police motorcycles intentionally and stuff, but nothing too huge. The one that pissed me off the the vandalization of Mc Donalds. HUGE corporation, so I'd be willing to bet it was some of the people against corporate america.
For the most part, however, it's all been peaceful and non-violent. Part of me wishes that I -was- still there. I believe enough in this cause to be arrested for it...but at the same time, I'd rather be arrested with a group of like minded people, rather than those that might be there to demonstrate against something I don't believe in. I don't know. It's just something I've thought about.
I'm just -really- glad I brought money with me. *lol* I wasn't going to, but I decided to, just in case, y'know? The busses just were NOT running, and neither was the lightrail (MAX). So I took a cab to the nearest bus that WAS running. Cost me fifteen buck, but hot damn. I made it home.
...after typing all that, I can't remember who said they were 3 or 4 hours from Portland. Whoever you are, where are you that's so close?
...and the police have made a circle around the peaceful protesters, and aren't letting them out.
*sigh* I'm not confident about this.
A quick topic, since I'm watching a bit of live news about this very thing.
I attended a march this afternoon that ended in a huge roadblock on west Burnside, making the bridge useless, and cars obsolete. Some walked down to the interstate and blocked traffic there (more than one, actually), but I had to leave in time to catch the last bus home. The price I pay for refusing to have a car. *lol*
I only participated in the march, candle light vigil, and sit-in, which is what is continuing now. I REFUSE to burn an American flag, and I stayed away from that, and this demonstration has been going since 4 pm. It's now 10:45 pm, and the police are now trying to disperse the huge crowd.
They all sat down, locked arms. *cheers!*
So, I'm waiting to see what happens. Portland has a huge history of demonstrations, and a rather bad history with the police. The police have been VERY patient tonight...but what now?
They've formed a line all the way across the street and are walking toward the demonstrators. They're sitting. Linking arms, still.
ALL PEACEFUL! That's the best part.
First of all, mysecondstar, I want to thank you for the way you're debating this with me, tho I don't think it's really a debate. All too often on this BBS, people aren't reasonable, and I'm slightly apprehensive about sharing my thoughts. I appreciate the way you've responded.
Second, you're right, and you've given a lot of facts. I think, tho, I mistrust the American media a bit too much, and they've only stated that Turkey IS AN ALLY. That's it. They don't give us any of the details that you have. Now, I knew about what you said to a point, tho that's something I've not really educated myself on...but I suppose my point was that they'd have the majority of the American public believe that our allies are stronger than they actually are, or that we have more OF them than we do. Honestly. The numbers change from channel to channel. It's insane.
Which is why I don't watch the news all that often. *lol*
Second, Bush is a cocky bastard, and if he had the big brassy ones to go against Security Council mandate, AND the Constitution, I've got faith that he'll try something with North Korea. I know they've readied more than one unit in the military specifically for that. A friend of mine has told me such, and they've been training specifically for that. It's touchy, and it's more than a little frightening.
1. I believe that Saddam Hussein is an evil dictator, and that instead of leaving his country and saving lives all over the world (including his own), he decided to stay and call down the thunder.
2. That doesn't make it right in my mind. This war is illegal. It is against the United States Constitution, and against UN Security Council mandate.
I don't think it's the issue of whether or not killing Saddam is legal or not that gets me. If he's dead, then the people are free to choose another leader, and hopefull history won't repeat itself.
I do not think Bush should have taken it upon himself to strike first. I do not agree with this war. I think it would have been much more cost effective to send in snipers. Shoot Saddam. Game over.
(DISCLAIMER: Yes, that is oversimplified. I just don't have the inclination to write EVERYTHING I believe in one thread. It's time consuming, and silly. Also...cost effective, meaning, lives first, then money. Innocents are dying, and are going to die.)
First...yes. I know there's some support from the countries mentioned. I realize that, I'm fairly well informed. ;) But the fact remains that even the countries that -are- supporting the US in their acts of war aren't 100% in agreement with the methods.
For example...Turkey. I've heard it listed on the news (pfft) that they list Turkey as an ally, when really? They -might- open up their airspace to us (if they haven't already), but refuse to let us use the bases or any ground access into Iraq.
I also know that anything is possible. So, who says these allies won't back out? I point to: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/03/19/1047749825703.html where it states: "Ten hours of debate ended with about half of Labour's backbench - 139 MPs - voting against Mr Blair, who had staked his political future on winning parliamentary backing for the war."
It's a possibility, that's all I'm saying.
Also, I didn't say my 'prediction' was dead on, or even a huge possibility. But it -could- happen. It's something that I've thought about, though I wouldn't exactly put money on it. Okay. Maybe five bucks.
The reason? North Korea and their growing arsenal. Are we ignoring them? The media is. But I highly doubt we are. So...sure. We go after North Korea, and suddenly...China's fighting against us, too. It'll come to nuclear blows, I fear, if that happens.
It's something to think about. America is NOT IMMUNE to this stuff. Don't live paralyzed in fear, but don't rule out the things that are still possible.

Very well put. Very.
That echoes what I truly feel, everything from being selfish about friends and their safety, to peace demonstrations, and the like. I just returned from one, and I left when it started getting too violent. I'm not talking riots or anything, but after they started burning flags, I decided that I wanted to stick with my principles. I am, however, watching it on the television, and the entire downtown area is almost devoid of cars, because of people in the streets. The police...are just...waiting, watching. Letting them. Either they're showing a lot of restraint...or they sympathize, and are letting the march/huge roadblock of people do their sit in for them.
Wow. Name calling will solve everything, I've learned here on NewGrounds.
</sarcasm>
Seriously, though...flaming someone because they post their opinion, regardless if it's something you've heard before, won't make you look smarter or wittier or more clever than the next guy. It's SIMPLE to flame. It's sometimes a challenge to be decent and either pass by the threads you don't care for...or represent yourself in a better way.
That being said, I'm convinced that the media EVERYWHERE is corrupted in some way. American media is the worst, really. Every station has a different title for the war, and they display it with BOOMING deadly music that's supposed to chill us. All it does is make me think of a soap opera. Blood red graphics seem to be in fashion this time, too.

What we're doing is combatting terrorism with terrorism.
Oh, yes. There's a comparison. Very real comparison.
Statements I need to make first: I am American. I know Saddam Hussein is an evil man and needs to be taken out of power. I disagree with how it's being done.
Now...
Frankly, it's disgusting to me that America likes to not only the Big Brother of all the hurting nations in the country, but the Big Bully to all the countries that don't agree with them, or cooperate.
So...I'm gonna see if I can make this simple. Bush's problem with Iraq and Saddam Hussein (supposedly) is that he didn't cooperate with the UN. Bush is now waging a rather unofficial and illegal war on Iraq...and in turn, isn't cooperating with the UN. That's hypocracy.
So, why am I scared to be an American? I have a sickening feeling that eventually, the USA is going to be standing alone, and all the nations that the USA has pissed off is suddenly going to look at the US and say, "YOU dropped bombs. YOU started this. YOU did this against your own Constitution, AND without approval of the United Nations. YOU are now considered a terrorist. YOU disarm."
Boom.
