Topic: My Game Test Engine

Posted: 06/08/08 10:03 AM

Forum: Flash

Okay, I've looked at the demo. Here are some recommendations on improvement, take them.

Okay, first of all: Your art is messy, rushed and looks like almost no effort was put into it. Work on making good looking characters/weapons before moving onto the environment/surroundings/backgrounds. Secondly, the character "guy", is holding a huge ass sword and a small pistol. One or the other, buddy.

Okay, and another thing about the character is copyrighted armour (i think it's copyrighted). You play too much runescape kid, or you did play too much runescape. Don't use other peoples ideas for armour. If you dot know what I'm talking about, search up "runescape dragon armour" on google, you'll see the resemblance.

Just, put more time and effort in to this and it may work out. And by the way, this isn't really a demo. It's more of an engine test/pre-alpha.

you should enjoy drawing for the act of creating itself, not what a bunch of people on the internet you probably never will meet say about it.

and on that note, you suck.

and you will only get better with practice, so get to it, and stop crying about it.

Yeah, you're totally right. Like, I haven't been drawing much lately, but there was a point where I was constantly drawing stuff, and comparing my work to a friend of mine. And I actually started getting better an better, not over night, but within weeks I went from drawing the crappiest drawings ever, to drawing abyssymal drawings. From there, I slowly increased. But I think all I need to do is just suck it all in and just keep going at it. I should aim for realism, and aim to improve.

I don't think anybody has anything else to say, Close this thread, please.

Well, I do enjoy drawing. Even though I'm not that great at it. But does that really matter? It's just, whenever I come and post art, I get people telling me to turn around and try again. But I can never really make things.. good in a sense.

At this point, I am not sure. When it comes time to coding the game, I will possibly send you a message on newgrounds. If you can do what I need, then I'll gladly accept you to the team. But then again, I may be able to code the entire game myself. I have some knowledge of actionscript.

Okay. It's very hard to make text scroll either horizontally or vertically. Listen carefully. Make a blank keyframe at the end of the timeline, and then right click and click "Create motion tween". Now, move the text to the other side of the stage, and hit enter. Your mind will blow up after that, just to warn you.

Posted: 03/25/08 06:21 PM

Forum: Flash

Well, Yeah. I know the art at this point sucks. But there's really not much I can do. Besides, I did rush through that image, when I knew that I made a large mistake, I didn't bother going back, because I wanted to have the image done just for the sake of showing a bad example of what the main character will look like. I know it's not proportional, lacks hands and whatnot, and is fairly ugly, but that's not the point. The official model of the main character, along with the rest of the cast of the "Game/Movie", will be drawn as precisely as possible.

I really couldn't agree more that my image sucks, that I lack "Proper art skills", but is it not a good enough example? Is it not good enough as a very, very bare image of what is to come?

Topic: Ginger Kid - Official Thread

Posted: 03/25/08 05:57 PM

Forum: Flash

Look up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No - It's a fucking ginger kid. Ginger Kid, bitten by a ginger duck, now possesses ginger powers. He's the worlds most infamous Super Hero. Hated by all, wanted by nobody. When ginger kid smashes through the window to help, you better take your children and run. With super sonic retardedness, the ability to eat large amounts of fast food, and finally - the ability to walk down side walks without landing on his face. Ginger Kid, will kill us all.

A new group of people are in town, and they're up to no good. They want you dead. Not only you, but all ginger kids in the entire world. All thirty seven of them. It's up to Ginger Kid, to stop them. This will be the first of many interactive games, coming this summer to newgrounds.

================================

Now, on to the actual point of this thread. I made this thread for the hell of it, because I wanted to show the progress the game is making. Right now, I have a very, very rough example of what Ginger Kid, the hero of the story, will look like. Of course, he has light hair, freckles, and last but not least: orange hair. I will be releasing this image very, very soon.

The type of game this will be, will be point and click. You will have the ability to go to different parts of town, and talk to various different people.

Roughly, I estimate that this game/movie will be released towards the end of June. Latest will be the middle of July. I plan to have everything done for beta-testing before the scheduled release date, I'm hoping the allow beta testers to test the game towards the end of May.

So anyway, I'll frequently update this thread with new previews and such, basically any other miscellaneous material will be posted here in time. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to code this game, but if I am in drastic need of help, I'd be more than happy to have a coder help out.

Discuss.

I am interested in joining this collaboration. Just to give you a heads up, there has already been one Orange Box Collaboration released here, on newgrounds. So you should make sure to check it out so you don't have duplicate "Sketches" within this collaboration.

If you allow me to partake in this collaboration, I would like to make a "Sketch" on Half-Life, or perhaps Portal. We'll see how far I actually get in making anything for this collaboration. I will try to have a bare outline of my "Sketch" for latest Friday this week, the 28th.

I hope to see this Collaboration do well.

Topic: Ginger Kid - Official Thread

Posted: 03/22/08 01:07 PM

Forum: Flash

Alright, seeing how my previous thread went to hell, just because I couldn't code for my life, neither could I draw life-like environments. I gave everything A lot of thought, but now I've come up with a brand new, almost completely original idea. It's a game, called Ginger Kid. So basically, you take the role as a Ginger Kid (Red hair, Freckles and Light Skin), and you've just found out that there is a group of anti-gingers coming to your town to attempt to exterminate your race. It's up to you to stop these fiendish beings, before it's too late. The race of the ginger kids, all twenty five, are in your hands.

At first, I was considering making this game a platformer, but I quickly decided against that. Who the hell needs more pointless platform games? Instead, it's going to be an adventure game, point and click perhaps. I have already drawn up a possible "Hero" for the story, who is in fact a ginger kid. I plan to work my fullest on this game, constantly updating this thread with new news, updates, concept art, official art, and more.

If anybody is interested in joining this "Project", doing anything at all (Eg. Gathering a sound track, Gathering sounds, Some scripting), I'll be glad to take new members to the team. I have yet to decided an official "Release Date" for the game, but I plan to have the buggy, near-complete edition finished before June. Hopefully I'll be able to release the game Sometime in September.

If you hate my idea, or love it, I'd like to know. In the past I have decided to make big games and such, but i was always going too ahead of myself. So this time, I'm going to start off slow, and make sure every single detail is as it should be.

What the hell more do I actually need? I can't draw life-like graphics for my life. I can only draw "Cartoony" styled drawings. I mean, seriously. I said the main idea would be surrounded by a point and click "format". That doesn't mean the entire game will be full of point and clicking. It'll be filled with puzzles, riddles, fight scenes too. If you would have read the thread properly you would have seen that I didn't want to make the game boring as fuck. Just go the hell away.

Topic: How do I make an easter egg???

Posted: 03/22/08 12:29 PM

Forum: Flash

If you want an easter egg, breed five or six chickens, make them lay eggs, then what you do is take paint and write the word "easter" on the egg. Then take a camera, throw the egg at the camera, and put it in your flash game/movie with the push of a button.

Merry Easter.

Forum: Flash

Well, I have worked a little with action script 2.0 before. All that is really required, is to make buttons to move in to different areas in the 'game'. And, the one thing for some reason I have focused on in the past, is creating buttons. So, basically ... the outline of the game would be just clicking on stuff, going in to different areas and such, but once everything is put together, I will attempt to build some sort of inventory script, and perhaps a drag and drop script too.

So, some examples:

on(release){
gotoAndPlay(30);
}

and ofcourse, stop(); and play();

======================

I mean, what more do you need to have an interactive story?

Topic: Graphics Artist Required

Posted: 03/22/08 11:52 AM

Forum: Flash

Alright, I have finally come to the sad conclusion: I cannot draw anything for my life. No matter how much effort I try to put into drawing stuff, it just never works out. So basically, I come here, to ask for a graphics artist. Now, don't think that I'm going to make you do all the work in the project I want to set up. I just need some graphics drawn, so everything can be put together. If any sponsorship happens, you can choose what percentile you really deserve out of the whole allotment.

So, Here's the idea of what I want to do: An interactive mystery game. No RPGs or endless shooters, I want to bring one of my story ideas to life. No animations shall be required, the game will be full of still images, but the user can manuver around the area, picking up objects, and interacting with the other players around him/her.

The story is the following: Six murders, completely unrelated to each other. You take the role of a detective, trying to solve this case, but it's not going to be a smooth road towards justice. In the end, the mystery is solved, but no without numerous 'mishaps' and 'threats' from the murderer, which I will not mention here for the sake of just keeping it a 'secret' until release.

I have more of a bare storyline already in my head, and I am willing to expand it when I can. I will also do the coding, so I am not just making you do all the work. If your not interested, please don't bother even posting here. At this time, I am not requesting example work, but if you can draw environments and people, then you'll get the slot as graphics designer for this project.

Cheers,
Max

Okay, so you want the map to move around, to give a bigger environment for the players. What you'll have to do is swap the code from player movement, with the map. Therefore, you'll be moving the map, instead of the 'character', therefore giving the illusion of a bigger, wider space.

As for the other things, sorry, can't help you there. Google or Search on newgrounds "RPG tutorial". If yee seeks, yee shall find.

Topic: Assistance Required

Posted: 01/13/08 12:17 PM

Forum: Flash

It's been awhile since I've posted on the forums, but whatever.
The reason why I'm posting again, is that I've finally gotten a graphics tablet, and I've decided I'm going to start making my first game. In the past, I've used other peoples' code to build basic game engines, but today I'm aiming to make a different type of engine, something I've never attempted to do before.

In short, I want to make a side-scrolling/platformer/shooter. I already have an idea for what to use as a storyline, and I'm planning to make some concept art later today. What I need from the very talented scripters here, are some codes I can use to build this new engine. The features I need to implement and have are the following: basic movement (the map moves instead of the character itself), the gravity + platform system (able to jump from platform to platform) and finally, some sort of AI system + shooting system.

Now, I know you may say that I'm a noob for asking for code, but I really don't care. I've never been good with actionscript, and I don't think I ever will be, I never really picked up on the 'skill'. I'm not asking one person to give me all the code at once, perhaps one concept at a time, not rushing to make the engine complete in one shot.

If you want me to tell you the story I have planned for the game, then I will gladly give you an outline. As for graphics, when I make them, I'll post them.

Thanks in advance,
Max.

Even though all this is very hard to believe, half of me wants to believe him, the other wants me to laugh at somebody that's just trying to get attention. But the thing that struck me as odd, is why did he right his final words on newgrounds? of all people? He probably knows nobody from the forums or newgrounds in general in real life, so he's telling a bunch of strangers how he's going to drug himself to death. But seriously, why would somebody say their final words on a blog, unless that person wanted to get tons of comments, like what's happening right now.

Anyways, Never knew the guy, went through his blog, read some of his articles and stories. He was/is pretty much a terrific writer, it's too bad he had to end his life like he did. All I have to say, is my regards towards his family, who will suffer deeply after this terrible mess. Rest in peace.
