Response to: Stronger Sanctions, Stronger Putin Posted 8 days ago in Politics

Russia dug too deep of a hole with the Ukrainian invasion. Annexing Crimea was one thing, but they went wayy too far too quick. They also continue to screw themselves with China relations. In all seriousness, if Russia, China, and Iran could stop swinging their dicks around and form an alliance, the trio would be a serious powerhouse in the region.

China has tried for years to drill in Russia's Far East, but Putin insists on acting like an idiot about it. They gave China rights to explore the Arctic last year, but that's not going to be enough. Joint drilling projects could be all over the Far East right now, and Russia wouldn't be even nearly affected by the sanctions as they are now.

This isn't Sony's fault. The theater companies are who need to be blamed for being colossal bitches about this.

Sony said they are going to release it at some point. The higher probability is that it is released on a leak, or a hack. From a business standpoint, though: That's great if the theaters pulled the movie; fuck them. Netflix should be hopping all over this opportunity.

No, but any difference is still substantial for such a long standing issue that has never been addressed. It's completely understandable for Vietnamese exiles to be upset, as well. With that said, keeping their homeland in poverty and despair isn't the best way to improve relations, in my opinion.

The way I look at it is like this: The exiles were fortunate enough to be able to escape. The people that weren't, however, shouldn't be punished because of it. I think it is very plausible that most of the remaining population probably doesn't want to be there, either.

Again, keeping the place a shithole does not hurt the regime - they will still live off the backs of the population. It hurts your average citizen, and that's why I typically disagree with exile rhetoric.

Response to: Cuba embargo endding Posted 9 days ago in Politics

The most outspoken opponents of improving relations with Cuba are exiles themselves. Rightfully so, I might add. With that said, I do think that many of the old-timers are naive to the Liberalization of the current Cuban government.

The officer in question used a choke hold, which is against NYPD's policy. Regardless of this person's rap sheet (which were all nonviolent offenses), the police violated their own policy, and there should be more serious consequences than just surrendering their badge in a case like this.

Against NYPD policy, and illegal, are completely different. While what he did was against the rules, it was not against the law.

I agree that he shouldn't have gotten the guy in a head lock. What I don't agree with, though, is that he should be charged with involuntary manslaughter (which is the most likely charge he would face in that scenario). He was following procedure that is taught at every police academy for subduing individuals larger than yourself.

Didn't the autopsy ruled homicide? Even if it was a heart attack, there's still evidence to suggest (like you said) that there was enough pressure to block some of his oxygen flow to cause the cardiac arrest. Being charged with manslaughter would make sense in this case if not more. Also, if they really had to restrain them, couldn't they use their tasers?

Well tasers pose a heart risk, as well. Not to mention shooting one from very close range may have limited effect. The barbs on a taser need to be a minimum of several inches apart in order to have full effect. At such close range, they pose a risk of landing too close to each other which would limit the current to only a small area. (I have no idea why that is.) There's also the issue of baggy clothes which are a good preventive measure against getting zapped.

Contrary to my previous post, I remain on the fence about this incident. Selling untaxed cigarettes is really a victimless crime that shouldn't be taken that seriously. At the least, it's not deserving of a whole squad of police officers showing up. On the other hand, I full suspect him of breaking the law, and was caught. He resisted, and was subdued. Albeit, not in the most humane method.

How it works is simple: you ogle at the list of books below and choose up to three of them you'd like to see scanned. Voting ends on January 1. If the winning book is bought out by some random human being before that date (these are fairly cheap books after all) then the second entry in the list is chosen.

Great post. Thanks for offering this to the everyone. In no particular order, I've listed the interesting titles I read:

The Soviet Political System under Developed Socialism (1977)
Are our Moscow Reporters Giving Us the Facts About the USSR?
Manpower Resources and Population Under Socialism (1979)

At 12/4/14 02:10 PM, TheKlown wrote: Eric Garner was murdered by criminals that wear a badge. The supposedly good police out there are not standing up against the bad police.

First off, Garner had a long rap sheet of repeated criminal activity. This is relevant because it typically dictates how the police are going to approach and/or handle you in a given situation.

More importantly, though, is that the autopsy report showed no throat damage to the victim. He died from a heart attack. The choke hold preventing just enough oxygen in his body to instigate cardiac arrest is an arguable statement due in part to his obvious unhealthy condition in the first place.

The way I look at it is like this: This guy has been caught selling untaxed cigarettes numerous times already. He's in his same spot where he always shuffles them, and he gets questioned by the cops. This isn't some uncommon occurrence, here; it's good police work to question this guy considering his prior offenses. Mr. Garner, clearly not the epitome of a healthy lifestyle, decides he's going to resist detainment this time. If he's innocent, than why resist? The guy is a whale, and he's completely outnumbered by the police.

Garner took a gamble, and lost. That's the end of it. Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, and Mike Brown are all criminals who ended up on the losing end of a fight. The only part race plays in these scenarios is an coincidence, unfortunately.

At 11/12/14 09:29 PM, SadisticMonkey wrote: Which countries would National Socialism work in?

By "National Socialism" are you referring to, specifically, Fascism? Sorry, I'm just confused as to what you're asking.

National Socialism - in the sense that the Fascist Germans and Italians used it - was a very, very strange economic concept that would have been ultimately impossible to maintain if it weren't for slave labor and ever-continuing wars to stimulate the economy (the latter being another aspect of Fascism).

On paper, National Socialism promotes private ownership of business, et cetera. Granted, it's definitely not free-market, or socialist for that matter. In the Nazi economy, for instance, there were a select few mega corporations that were buddied up with the regime. These companies eventually took over in those perspective fields of manufacture and production (i.e. - Ammunition, vehicles, clothing, computers.. just to name a few) and ruled the market. While there still existed smaller independently owned companies, they realistically stood no chance at competing with the government-backed companies. Furthermore, many of these military companies utilized slave labor provided by the government. Eventually that practice would have also diminished due to the deportation and/or death of the concentration camp population.

Another important aspect to note is that while these big companies were allowed to dominate the market in Nazi Germany, the government still had a substantial amount of control over said businesses. While the Nazis were extremely anti-communist, they were just as much anti-capitalist. Hitler and the regime did not trust the ruling elite business class of the Weimar Republic, and made sure there would be no resurgence of any such.

In essence, the Fascist economic model is just as totalitarian as its political one. The economy was not centrally-planned, but it was heavily and very strictly regulated by the government.

My advice would be to take it easy and see how it goes with her. Getting a nice buzz / tipsy always helps me overcome shyness a bit. Dress nice, get a bit tipsy before most people show up so you have infinite confidence, and give her a bunch of attention when she first shows up. After that act like you don't care anymore and see where it goes.
