Response to: Facebook: Anti-social media Posted February 19th, 2013 in General

I never understood why people would go ahead and delete their facebook account. Facebook only matters as much as you care for it to do. If you're consistently never responding to anything, it's like you never had the account anyway. And not deleting the account give you the benefit of being able to keep track of what events are going on, and what your friends are up to, not to mention lots of sites use "log in with facebook" as a new standard.

As for being too reliant on facebook to do stuff for you, there's the same argument that everything is optional and you choose exactly how much you rely on facebook on your own.

Otherwise, something like a youth politics organisation? Various addiction support groups? Have you told her you volunteer somewhere? If not you could be hanging with friends, movie night and whatnot.

At 2/6/13 04:23 AM, Stereocrisis wrote: Whoa, you completely missed my point. I'm complaining that I live in a world were all of this technology is in front of us, and people as uneducated in America as they have ever been.

A good part of my previous post was directed to what seemed to be the general consensus of the thread, rather than you specifically. I realize I should've hinted to that in the post itself, oh well.

I think the idea that technology haven't improved our general intelligence is not evidence of us not being "worthy" of it, in a sense. Obviously I'm exaggerating by saying "worthy", but in lack of better words it's what I choose to go with. I don't think there's any real way to make us "natively" used to new technology, or to make our species more intelligent as a whole. Apart from maybe extreme gene manipulation, whose research is stalled already due to moral issues.

As mentioned by @kisame earlier, we're perfectly capable of self destruction regardless of technology. The city of Atlantis would be an example for that, and the other intelligent creatures you mention have also managed to completely vanish, with or without the technology we have today. The only difference would be that the communication we have available opens the possibility of a social crisis in a completely different way than before.

Information is for those who seek it. As you've mentioned we've got just about every tiny bit of information available, yet so few choose to indulge themselves in it. I believe that is a fair choice. However, information comes in many forms and is appreciated on a different fundamental level. You could say people who play instruments as a hobby are actually exploring the information concerning music on a practical level. Similarly you could say people who spend their time on social medias are exploring the social, and personal aspects of the specific people they're following. I'm sure there's a whole field dedicated to exploring behavior and addiction to social networks, but I'm in no way an expert to the subject. I'm not comfortable speculating, so I'll refrain from doing that.

Blah, that turned out to be an essay of the nature I advised against.

Also, when I said I wasn't getting much from this thread, I meant in the sense that my previous posts were just recitations of my already in-place idea. So rather than actively joining in debate, I was just sharing my point of view without much thought put into it. This post is more interesting as I'm challenged to think differently.

At 2/5/13 08:14 PM, Stereocrisis wrote: Although, I have to ask you. What are your thoughts on energy? Don't we as human being carry around with us energy? I know that when we did, our bodies cease to function, but Einstein proved that energy can not be destroyed, only changed.

All "energy" we posses is stored various forms in the body. Some in the form of fat, others take on more complicated forms, like muscles. It's similar to how the dinosaurs died, storing huge amounts of energy. It's the same energy we use today to fuel our cars, but over the course of thousands of years under heavy pressure, has made the energy much easier to extract.

Everything can be explained scientifically, and there's really no need for layman speculation.

As for the people complaining about technology doing the opposite of what it should: What? Have you even read the latest scientific progress? We're on the brink of discovering our universes place in a potential multiverse. We're so close to discovering the basic fundamental properties of all. We've made great medical progress, going from "people dieing of an unknown disease" to finding, categorizing AIDS, and now it's a manageable chronological condition, rather than a mystery of the body attacking itself.

Before you enter a pointless rant about how "social medias" and "new technology" is ruining humanity - perhaps take a brief second to consider that the only reason other people can read your thoughts at all, is because of that same social media, and new technology. Life is exactly what you make of it, you will do what you do and nothing even matters in the end.

Apologies if I come off as cross, but I'm not really getting much from this discussion.

Thing is though; we don't have to win you over, but you have to catch our attention if you're looking to spark conversation. Now, enough of the metadiscussion, I'll present my perspective to life as for now.

I base myself on the fact that we're all individual clumps of cells, whose specific properties depends on what your ancestors properties was like. We have virtually no choices whatsoever in life - and it's not because of some predetermined destiny. It's because everything we do ever, is based on previous experience applied to the current situation. Experience is in turn based on a mix of environmental, and inherited properties.

The fact that we're all born as humans with our own thought is just because that's the only place for a lucid mind to take place. Similar to why are we on Earth is because that planet happens to be capable to support life; Or why we're born in this universe(If you follow string theory). I believe when you die, you die. Game over. Your "mind" is only in existence because your braincells are communicating in a certain way.

Blah, that ended up being a personal reflection rather than a response to the topic.
Response to: New UK gay marriage law. Posted February 5th, 2013 in General

The problem is there's a moral issue for the priests. As you said, the majority of priests simply won't do it. There are, however, a small amount that will marry gay couples despite what the general consensus is. I think the point is to remove the ancient restriction, and what may follow, follows. At least there won't be this barrier of a law the church can hide behind.
After this legislation passes, if you want to get married through the church, you'll always find a priest somewhere that can make it happen.

The reason priests won't be forced to accept is sorta the same reason why Niqabs and Burqas are allowed, and falls under the category freedom of religion.

Response to: Sleep, damnit Posted February 5th, 2013 in General

When I was having trouble sleeping, I was told using screens before going to bed tricks your body into believing it's still daytime. The doctor advised me to take a break from the computer/TV/phone 30-60 minutes before going to bed. If you've any other hobbies that doesn't involve using a screen, you could take that up. Alternatively doing what @UVSoaked suggested, or installing f.lux. Keeping the computer in your bed/bedroom is not helping, so if you're doing that I suggest you find a new place for your computer.

Personally, I found keeping a stricter sleep schedule helped plenty.

It's an extremely niche account that is used more than it really should, and more often that not his morals are very forced. I mean - some of the stuff he's saying lacks any real content beyond "I don't like this". He has a tendency to make a medium-sized paragraph out of what could be said in one line.

However, he does provoke and spark discussion. And even though most of them ends in "*sigh* what a noob you are --supergandhi64", if he responds to the replies he get at all; it's still discussion that wouldn't have been there without him.

Take all this with a grain of salt, I haven't even been here for the most part so any conclusion I make would probably be slightly faulty.
