I've heard of that one too, but image ready works just as well for .jpgs and .gif... it all depends on your compression settings.

An alternative to MS Paint Posted July 20th, 2006 in General

I've noticed that many people use MS Paint for photoshop and that at least an equal number complain about the quality. The main reason no one uses photoshop here is because of its price, correct? Well I've got good news for you then.

Last year I downloaded a free trial of adobe photoshop for 30 days just like you can do for flash. It was fun to use while I could, but it expired. This is a great short term solution, and I accidently provided myself with a long term solution. When you download the free trial it also gives you a program called ImageReady.

ImageReady is essentially a watered down version of photoshop that you can use for web applications. I was surprised that it didn't terminate itself with the rest of the adobe package, but I am also quite pleased and have used it ever since.

It is harder to use gradients and you don't get the pen tool or magic lasso, but you do get the magic wand tools and filters amoung other things. I suggest you look into this program if you'd like to actually contribute to future photoshop threads, or just need a program for personal use or flash use.

(these questions are open so for some of them try and write centances)

1. How did you find out about Xbox?

Gameplay at friends house and word of mouth.

2. Do the adverts help persuade you?

Not at all.

3. Do you try to find out more about the product when you have seen it advertised?

No.

4. What method of advertising do you find the most effective?

The kind that isn't in my face like a web page that I can search up and look for what I want. Anything that openly goes out looking for me turns me off.

5. What time do you watch T.V?

If I watch it, and not often its generally around 6 PM or after 10 PM

6. What game magazines do you read?

None

7. What adverts put you off?

Like I said almost all. TV commercials, radio commercials, pop ups, banners are fine because they don't really interupt what I'm doing. Websites are fine because they are self contained. Also, any add on the internet with sound that is uncontrollable by the user is horrible. ie, Hellooo?

It happens at home when I'm on dial up or on wireless. I think its just a slow connection or broken conection that doesn't completly load everything since this bbs has a lot of information to it.

You take too much out of the general and there won't be anything left for the general. :/

Why remove the good stuff, when its the bad stuff we don't want?

It just sounds backwards to me. And an additional forum for pictures would bring back topics like the cam-whores.

My dad had a stroke last year right before I went to college, seeing him crying at the hospital was about the worst I ever felt. Then he broke his back a few months later while hunting and we went through all over again. Its just hard to see someone you've always known break down like that, especially when you know there isn't anything you can do to change the situation.

Sparse gems, fly past my eye
Forget not, ye of flame
Insults and harsh words do not win you fame.

Do not stand tall.

Reality, ruthless, raker of dreams
Has undone all seams
Like, Deadalus, you have flown too high
I sigh.

You Fall.

We'd just get more confused people. People ask questions in the general, they talk about flash in where is/how to, they talk about action script in programming, they talk about just about everything in C&C, and in politics they pretend to know everything and be better, but still post irrelivant topics that don't relate to politics. Its the nature of our bbs. If we had 20 sections it would only get worse, and it would be much harder to moderate.

And unfortunatly, though a lot of us enjoy those kind of topics, it sends a message to the new users who look up to you and look for an example of what is ok and what is not ok that spam is ok. I agree that its near impossible to have rules that enforce fun. And its impossible to really get a feel for a forum unless you participate or lurk for an absurd amount of time. Making mistakes is where its at.

Also, its worth noting that a lot of users think they are cool when they are not.

Response to: What do other forum owners do? :) Posted July 19th, 2006 in General

About the whole people making alt accounts weeks in advance to bypass that rule, it means that they have planned out something. If they are planning to abuse the NG system, they will usually be able to do it because we can't predict what they are going to do. No matter what there will be alts that get through the crack.

A one week ban on new accounts posting topics is actually a good idea. Think about what circumstances would be avoided. The new user who was just banned for the first time and decides to make a topic on an alt asking the mods why his topic was deleted and why they suck so much.

Also we look at today. Wade makes a news post and then we get twenty fake wade accounts posting all made today. Had the seven day rule come into place they could have reacted the similarly in a week, after the topic had dropped off the page and no one really cared anymore.

It would get rid of the spontanious spam assaults. The planned ones we will just have to deal with always... Though it should be easy enough to crack down.

I still agree with the idea of a redirection to the rules page for the first few posts or a casual reminder or automated pm to first time posters reminding them of the importance of reading the rules. Anyway, I don't know what will happen out of all of this.

There are a lot of ideas, and some will be implemented and we can't really know what will happen untill they are implemented.

I'd love ot say I had some deep meaning in mind, but I didn't. I was randomly typing things into the address bar looking for random websites. I had gum on my shoe at the time and wallah, gumonshoe. The site didn't exist at the time and it upset me, the words stuck and then I created an account, couldn't think of anything great so I used gumOnShoe. Its spelled the way it is due to my programming background. Camelcaps.

And I'm going to admit that its one of my pet peaves when I see GumonShoe or GoS or GumOnShoe or Gumonshoe... don't know why, but it is.

Sig: 4/10.

I used to have sig text, but I recently removed it because everything in it was out dated. I generally use it to express how I am feeling at the moment or give links to important threads. Neither are necessary at the moment. The picture was just updated today. I made it a couple months ago... I havn't found one picture that I have settled on since NGCA made me one based on Samarai Champloo... so I've mainy been experimenting.

Profile Picture: 8.8/10

There was a topic about how certain sign up dates were better than others. I was going through a sig making spree at the time and made that as a large picture to post in the topic... I used to have this cool glowing blue one that one of my friends animated, but I replaced when I went through a wierd phase a few months ago. It doesn't really mean anything to me, I'm still considering replacing it, I just havn't come up with anything to replace it yet.

BBS Post: 9.8/10

Thank you, and I would gladly shake your hand as well. I appreciate the sentiments though I've always found it hard to think of myself as "awesome"... don't know why.

Blam/Protect 4.6/10.

Gave it up after last November maybe... I do it everynow and then, but I don't feel the need to increase stats so I only vote occasionally when it interests me.

Whistle: Silver, not bad... 8/10

Rages gift to you... helped immensely, although it didn't take a whole lot of flagging to get silver, and I no longer flag on this account.

Level: 7.4/10. Pretty generous :)

It is, especially since I havn't triedto level up in months... I just once again do not feel the need. I want to see what the new levels are before I pass anything up. I deposit everynow and then to hold onto level ten.

Reviews: Fantastic. 9.6/10. KUTGW! (hehe)

I havn't really reviewed a lot since before my review ban... and back then I did horribly. Granted now I think I do a good job, but I don't do it very often. Its been a few months since I reviewed anything. :/

Flash/Audio: 7.5/10.

I don't have any audio, that is true, and from my couple experiments with it you should all consider yourselves lucky. As for new flash, I have something to do for captain jack and a game I've been working on that I'm using users to test... should be updating the test pages soon... Tablet gets here today so I should be able to focus on it soon.

BONUS:

I still don't see it in me as being awesome... but if you say so. :)
Thank you.

OVERALL!!!!:
This quote is wrong, for you have learned to fly with what you already have.
I grant you a 8.4/10, and with the bonus point that comes out to a 9.4/10.

Thats a pretty high score. o_O :D

Thank you very much. And are also up there with me, there just seems to be a little bit less of you around than I'd like to see. :'(

Thank you for your time.

Thank you even more for yours.

I just find it odd how you sum up your adventures on the BBS and pretty much the BBS itsef in only two posts. It makes me think of when I opened my eyes to the internet and the BBS. Back then, it seemed all shiny, new, and amazing, but now it's more of a common thing. All this time I was envious of Mods and people with higher post counts. After reading that, I feel that 1,000 posts isn't something to be so proud of. It is, as it is a symbol of the ability to post things without being banned all the time. How many posts a REALLY decent? Worth reading? Not many. Now 1000 posts just seems like a number.

Good. Because thats all it is. I honeslty have never felt some surge of relief for getting a set # of posts. Its like being a year older. A lot of people make a big deal out of it but you don't actually feel any different.
