Response to: 6% of scientists are republicans Posted December 18th, 2010 in Politics

I mean, lets take a minute and figure out why this might be?

There is scientific consensus that global warming is a real thing. But you hear republican talking heads saying there isn't enough proof all the time.

The majority of the army says we should end DADT, but Republicans know this would be horrible even when all the people and studies say otherwise.

Republicans don't accept evolution from time to time and places that are very read often try to build Creationist theme parks or introduce creationism into the science curriculum.

When you get down to it, the Republicans don't follow the scientific method. They follow the old religious methods of believing what you can "trust" to be truthy. That doesn't jive with scientific thought and this isn't surprising.

Its not a big deal that so few scientists are Republicans. The problem is that Republicans who have positions in government are unwilling to listen to people who give their time to study subjects, vet each other, and all around try to find out the truth about this world in order to benefit us all.

6% of scientists being Republicans is a symptom of a larger problem.

If science is wrong, all you have to do is submit evidence showing so and scientists believe you because their entire culture is based around analyzing evidence and not believing anything that can't be proved or that's been proved to be wrong.

Vs. Republicans (or any other politician) who only are interested in being elected and telling you what you want to hear and giving you what will make you vote for them. Take the deficit issue. They believe in giving you tax cuts, but not in cutting spending. They've cut taxes so much without a plan to reduce spending that the deficit is now growing by trillions of dollars. What other proof do you need that these people are liars? Why aren't you upset that they won't listen to experts on matters of import such as disease, climate, reproduction, etc?

If you didn't see Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

Please kill yourself.

If you don't like that option.

Go buy it & watch it.

It was probably the best nerd fill of the year, and better than most other films. You play video games? You'll like it. You went to college? You'll like it. You're a human being? Oh, you'll like it even more.

I guess you wouldn't like it if you don't like funny & awesome movies.

I only bring it up because too many of you didn't see it in theaters. And that's disapointing because you failed your culture. Stop being an ass wipe and go buy it.

Thanks. Hope you enjoyed ths PSA.

It seemed like it was having a fairly high rating on RottenTomatoes, but has since gotten down. I will probaly see it for the sole purpose of having seen something that was related to "Tron" as the original movie was popular. I wonder if the next "Kingdom Hearts" game is going to feature some stuff from this movie or something?

If you saw the original Tron, you probably would like it. The graphics for the original were pretty bad, the script was bad, but it was a very inventive and creative story with a unique philosophy. It was on the cutting edge when it was originally released, but from this day and age it looks very out dated. People who liked the idea of the original movie and creativeness of it will like the new one.

That said, this movie is being billed as an action packed adventure, and it isn't. Its a case of bad marketing. This is the story of a father who spent too much time with a habbit and essentially abandoned his kid. While this is a story about getting sucked into a computer, its mostly a story about trying to escape while trying to bond with a long lost relative. Its a slow moving story. Its given room to breath. Pixar put in its opinion on the story line and it got stuck somewhere between the original script and what a Pixar movie like Up would be.

You might like it if it still sounds interesting. It should be said that this is the first of a trilogy. It is setting up something big. And I personally believe its worth you putting down your money so we can all figure out where its going. At the very least it is very pretty.

Things that might make you like it a little more.

If you know linux and terms like grep, ls, kill, etc. If you've ever worked on software. If you liked the matrix, but you're not big on something that's been sold out to focus on the violence and skips on plot. Also, if you like playing the arcade game snake, you might like this movie.

The movie has some religious undertones. There is a philosophy that grows around evolving code and Users as creators. The first movie is all about trying to defeat a security program put in by an evil boss who is trying to steal code and profit. This is about what happens after they win the system back and take the company.

This movie is not for everyone, but you will enjoy it more if you go in with low expectations. The best way to ruin this movie is to believe it is the crucible of awesome tech movies.

You like that old movie Hackers? Maybe you'll enjoy this.

Response to: Tron: Legacy Posted December 18th, 2010 in General

This movie is NOT an action movie. It is slower than you'd believe it would be going into it.

Don't expect something fast pace that's missing emotion or that's very deep or intricate.

It is pretty. Its a good ride. It is certainly interesting. I'd give it 3.9 stars out of 5. Certainly better than most of what has been released this year, but not as good as something like Inception or even the latest Harry Potter (assuming you read the books).

Response to: AS3 Packages Posted December 17th, 2010 in Game Development

Packages are literally URLs to your code. Each package is a folder. The path to an individual code file starts at the root of your directory tree and goes directly to the file. Its simple.

If you've ever done web development, it is the exact same idea as a URL.

You either import the specific file or you give the package URL for the set of documents you want and use * to get all of the code files in the last mentioned package.

I assume eventually the whole site is going widescreen as the flash portal already is and we've been talking about icons and whatnot. So, if the forum goes widescreen like it probably will, what do you think the sig dimensions will be? Do you think they'll get larger or the post box will stay the same size while we get ads down the side?

What size would you like sigs to be?

Animated?

SVN is as idiot-oriented as it gets. No point looking for anything else. Definitely not Git.

The files were deleted from the repository as well. I can do a backwards update to an earlier version, but the tortoise GUI didn't have a revert functionality and even if it did, I had already done a commit thinking it had deleted the right files.

I literally told SVN to delete files in folder B, and it did, but it also deleted files in folder A.

Response to: Do you believe in the users? Posted December 17th, 2010 in General

Anyways...

I might have plans to see this tonight. I'm looking forward to it.

Curious if anyone else has seen the old movie? Whether anyone is actually excited for this?

You shouldn't go in expecting an action movie. The last half was influenced by Pixar, and they gave it an "Up" vibe.

Do you believe in the users? Posted December 17th, 2010 in General

I don't know. I know that Kevin Flynn guy "claims" he's a user, but I've never seen proof of it. He's just this old program who sits outside the grid. Won't even join in the games. The program's headed for dev-null, I'm sure.

Supposedly somethings going to happen today though. I'm on light cycle duty today. There are plenty of bits that need to be cleaned off the frames.

I think in the end we're all just going to dev-null. There's no such thing as users, just us programs and the system.

Hey, at least Master Control as been erased.

Those were different Republicans Jon... lol. This republican party now is an outgrowth of an anti slavery party founded in 1854. Not that they are pro diversity now. In the mid 20th situation the racists all switched parties and joined the Republicans and the Republicans of that day turned democratic.

Not that I don't disagree. The money pretty much owns everything.

And it was like: Mwamf (that's the sound a tortoise makes when it eats src folder instead and then has your bin file for desert).

Now I need to revert the whole system, export it, delete the old one, and create a new one. Just thought I'd share this sad story with the one group of people who might understand it on this site.

So, is there something better out there for backing up code or interacting with svn? lol

At 12/15/10 06:18 PM, Elfer wrote: Pretty much. I think there's a stronger argument to say that mandatory auto insurance is a form of taxation than there is for what Obama is saying in that video. Of course, politicians will never admit that a new tax actually is a new tax. The legal oddity here is that it's technically not a tax, so it can't be treated as one.

My guess is that this ruling has done nothing more than give the bill's supporters a few months to find some goofball precedents that say the government's allowed to make you buy stuff.

At the same time there is no requirement that people purchase health care. It is actually just a requirement that you have health care. For some people that healthcare is provided before they are even given a paycheck, by their employees. Other people get their insurance through charities, I'm sure. The mandate is that you have insurance, not that you must buy it.

And as odd as that argument sounds since most people will have to buy it or pay for a part of it, you can't truly say the government is taking your property. And further, if you are purchasing an item there is an assumption of an exchange of value. Which means that you are technically gaining something, and the government itself is not taking your property. Moreover, do you actually own your money, or is it the property of the U.S. government? After all there is a penalty for destroying U.S. currency, even currency that is "yours."

As far as it not being a tax. Its not technically a tax if you speed on a road either. Its a fine. And fines are perfectly legal and have been for a long time. While in my personal opinion this is very much like a tax, you can justify it from a legal standpoint many different ways.

Pox, its a pretty shitty plan compared to what it could have been, but it has things in it that are good.

Such as, you can't turn someone down for health insurance. Or, you can't charge extra due to pre-existing conditions.

In the end, I'm hoping this legislation just turns into motivation for doing it right once and for all. I don't think anyone is happy right now, but they also aren't going to be able to take away certain parts of the bill without out pissing off large portions of the population. So, we're at the point now where we can talk about what we actually want instead of whether there will be 'death panels'.

As far as the mandate. I'm not really happy with it, but it certainly forces people to care. So, I'm not that upset by it either.
