Concerning going from grayscale to color...

Traditional oil painting has a step called "under-painting" or "dead layer" where the painter creates the values of the piece -- a grayscale version of the final painting. Over top of that, the painter then applies a small amount of color (think of it like a glaze) so that the dark/light value of the under-painting shows through.

In photoshop this can be done by scanning in a grayscale image, then painting over the gray with colors at various opacity.

Read up more on the subject by searching for the terms underpaintingand dead layer

I've heard the whole custom brush thing myself and figured its largely hogwash -- traditional painters use a few brushes and have been pulling off amazing stuff for over 5000 years.

The biggest help any illustrator can get is learning how to draw before painting. I've seen alot of portfolios where the person tries to fix the line art in the painting stage -- its just building a house on sandy ground.

Here is a sample of how I normally paint -- a sketch that has tonal values, then a paintover. By the time I get to the painting stage its a like painting by numbers because the sketch already works.

@ Rhunyc

95% of the time its just 3 brushes - one for solid lines, one for blending, one for edging.
I don't mess with jitter or feather or anything but opacity.

I do new work everyday except for Sunday.
Some specific client work is under NDA till the time the publisher releases it.

I will be releasing some artwork from an upcoming flash game - Galiard's Last Stand so stay tuned for that.

Anime/manga is a cartoon form so everything is going to exaggerated. A lot of starting artists make the mistake of wanting to come out with their own manga/comic book. Don't fall for it because it will just drive you crazy.

Learn how to draw correctly before tackling an exaggeration of it. Look at portraits of people to get an idea of why features are distorted.
