Response to: [CL] what did you learn from them? Posted January 22nd, 2010 in Audio

Anybody here listen to Wagner? If you're looking for a composer who can convey darkness, chaos, and anger, he's a good one. The amount of users on newgrounds who listen to opera is probably .0001%, but hey, just throwing it out there. Also, if you're into dark, intense chiaroscuro, check out Mozart's 'Don Giovanni".

On the other hand, if you're into fluffy, light-hearted tunes, check out Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons'. A beautiful and easy listen, even for people who don't like classical. Summer, Third movement is SUPER hardcore, btw.

All in all, the classical composers are the ones I look to for composition quality, melodies, theory, and general awesomeness. Modern musicians such as Deadmau5, Bore Gore, and Owl City...I don't learn as much from them, but some of the unique digital sounds they create interest and inspire me to make unique sounds and instruments. It's beneficial to take a little bit from both worlds, if you know what I mean.

P.S. - I never thought I'd see a thread like this on the newgrounds forums. It's awesome.

Response to: Explosive drums needed... Posted January 20th, 2010 in Audio

To get super hard drums, I've been using ReWire with Propellerhead Reason 4.0. When you get a 'ReDrum' set up in Reason, add a "Scream 4" distortion effect to it. When you hook it back up to FL using a MidiOUT channel, try messing around with the drum kits and distortion levels. My favorite way to get original, hard-hitting drum sounds.

Or, a more simple method would be to just wait until someone besides me makes a post with a good suggestion for harder drum samples.

:-)

Response to: Collection of hard dance Posted January 20th, 2010 in Audio

Hey! I'm pretty new, too! I am not what you would call a "hardcore" artist, or at least it wouldn't seem that way when listening to my music. However, ever since I first started producing electronic music, I have been trying harder and harder to make my music harder and harder. It's still not there yet, but I'm working on a new song called "Red Medic", and I'm giving it all I've learned in my 4 years of making music to try to make it hit harder than any of my other songs.

I'm wondering if you have any tips or tricks to share with me, so that I may crank up the hardcore level on the new tune. What do you use to get the hard synth sounds? I'm sort of a softie when it comes to instruments. Not a bad thing, but it's inconvenient when I'm trying to make something 'Groovebot defying'. :-)

Response to: Keyboard Posted January 20th, 2010 in Audio

There's a couple ways you could do this...

First of all, you need to decide whether you want the original sounds of the keyboard in your song, or the same melody played through a DAW like FL Studio. Is FL Studio what you use? If so, try either manually entering the notes in a new instrument using piano roll, or plug the keyboard in as a MIDI controller and record using a FL instrument.

If you want the sound straight from your keyboard, you'll have to use a program like audacity (PC) or garageband (mac) that allow for recording through a microphone jack in your computer. You may need a 1/4" cable, like a guitar cable, and a 1/4" to 3.5"mm converter. There are other tutorials that could help you out with real-time recording, but I'm just giving you options :-)

Hope this was helpful! Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions!

I know I've already posted on here twice, but I'm new to newgrounds, so I have to upload my songs one at a time. I just uploaded this one today...be sure to let me know if you like what you hear! :-)

Response to: 8-Bit sounds with FL8 Posted January 19th, 2010 in Audio

Wasp is great for this sort of thing. The saw and square waves especially. Also, try messing around with the LFO 1 channel for a cool sort of vibrato sound. Keep the "amount" knob slight, and turn the "rate" up way higher. Not all the way, but enough to hear it. It's quite fun to play around with, actually! I use Wasp to get an 8-bit sound in my newest song, Knockout.

Listen for the 8-bit sounds right after the piano part.

There are other ways too, like special VSTs and such. As stated above, "tweakbench" is quite good for that sort of thing. However, if you listen to chiptune artists such as 8-bit weapon or albino ghost monkey, I know that they get their sounds by using a Gameboy color game called "LSDJ" or "little sound DJ". Download a gameboy emulator and give it a try :-)

Victim of ignorant 0 bomber. Posted January 19th, 2010 in Audio

Hey, I know this happens all the time, and stuff, rather than ranting about it, I would like to ask the handful of people who are honest voters to please listen to my song, and listen well (to more than 30 seconds), and rate it honestly. I put a lot of time and effort into this song, and personally, I feel it deserved the rating it had before someone zero bombed me. I'm not trying to win anything, or prove anything to anyone...I would just like honest feedback. I want to know what people like and don't like, rather than having my rating destroyed just because it was #1 for a couple minutes.

If you are an honest voter, and would like to hear my honest attempt at making music, and judge it accordingly, please follow the link below:

I'm not positive what sort of song you're going for, but try giving this a litsen! It can be tweaked, cut up, looped, changed, fixed, or anything like that.

Just let me know!

BTW, I really admire your work :-) Alien Hominid is a beautiful, beautiful game.

Groovebot's Jams/

Hey guys! I just got my first song uploaded, and I want to see what people think! I'll have other songs up in due time, but for now, be sure to check out "Knockout" and tell me what you think!

PLEASE BE HONEST VOTERS! If you're going to vote, listen to the whole song, and give it whatever score you feel is appropriate! I spend a lot of time on my music though, and I know it deserves more than a zero, that's all.
Happy listening!

Audio Portal Approval? Posted January 14th, 2010 in Audio

Hey all!

I'm new to newgrounds, as well as it's audio portal...and forum. I tried submitting my latest song on the audio portal yesterday, and it didn't go anywhere. I received a notification saying I had to wait until my song was approved by an audio moderator before it would appear to others.

It makes perfect sense to me, but now after two days without word I'm starting to wonder how long it usually takes. Assuming everyone else also had to wait when they submitted their first song, I'm wondering how long it will take...because I just really want to see what people think of my music, and want people to hear it!

How long should I wait before contacting somebody? Should I try re-submitting it?
