Hey guys just started playing a week ago, anyone have some tips for me while I'm sniper/spy/scout?
Here I go with my SPY tutorial. Here's a few tips on playing spy:
- Don't stay in one place. This is a tactic that WAY too many spy noobs try, and it never works. Always be on the move, remembering to stop OCCASIONALLY to recharge for Cloak and Dagger (if you use it)
- While using the Cloak and Dagger, if you're short on cloak power, and no one's around, just uncloak. It recharges much faster.
- If you re-disguise as the same class as you're already disguised as, you're disguise will appear to change weapon. Do this often to avoid suspicion. (Press B to do this while you're disguised)
- If you're low on health, and you're disguised, press E to call an enemy medic. If an enemy medic does heal you, just take whatever you can to heal yourself, then run away. Don't hang around.
HERE'S A BIG ONE:
- If an enemy figures out that you've disguised as one of their team-mates, they attack you, and you make an escape, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COUNTER ATTACK DISGUISED AS THE SAME CLASS. On too many occasions I've seen Spy noobs attempt to backstab an enemy, fail, then try again as the same class. It never works.
Here's a list of the classes, along with a short statement about why you should/shouldn't disguise as them.
Scout, NO - When you disguise as a scout, you run at half the speed of what a scout would usually run. It's too obvious, don't do it.
Soldier, YES - This is a good one if you want to quickly pass through an enemy crowd. Very little Spys disguise as a Soldier due to the slow walking speed. This is why you should disguise as a soldier, because seeing as barely anyone does it, it's not as suspicious.
Pyro, NO - Almost every Spy disguises as a Pyro. Don't do it, because if another Pyro sees you, there's a HUGE chance he'll spycheck you (What's spychecking? I'll explain later). Disguising as Pyros? Bad idea.
Demoman, YES - Decent running speed, and is not used as often as other classes. However, to avoid suspicion, re-disguise often, and keep walking side to side. Act like the enemy.
Heavy, YES - Just like the soldier, the heavy has a terrible running speed, which is why not many spies disguise as him. Don't disguise as this class if you want to backstab someone. Use this class to steal health from medics and dispensers without looking suspicious.
Engineers, YES - This is a brilliant one. Nobody ever suspects the Engineer. Use this class to sap enemy engineer's equipment. A good tactic for taking out multiple engineer's equiptment who are in the same area is to disguise as one of them. While you're sapping their equiptment, they'll have a hard time figuring out who's the spy. However, do not disguise as this class when you're not around any engie-based equiptment. An engie that's walking around the enemie's base just doesn't make sense.
Sniper, YES - Again, nobody suspects a sniper. Don't hang around as a sniper for too long though, as they'd expect you to look through your scope regularly to get headshots, something that you can't do. Just like an engie, disguise as a sniper where sniper's would usually stay (e.g. The battlements of 2fort).
Medic, NO - If you disguise as a medic, enemy players will expect you to heal them. You can't heal them, because you're not their teams medic, you're a spy, and spies can't heal.
Spy, NO - Pyros are your worst enemy as a spy. Even when you're disguising as an enemy spy who's disguising as a player on your team, they'll spy-check you anyway. Don't do it.
What's spy-checking?
Spy checking is when a pyro sprays fire everywhere see if any spys are hiding, or to check if anyone on your team is a spy. If your a spy disguising as an enemy, and an enemy pyro sprays you with red hot firey faggotry, you'll set alight, while still disguised. This clearly puts a sign over your head saying to your enemies: 'KILL ME, I'M A SPY.' The same thing happens when you are cloaked. If you're cloaked, and a Pyro randomly sprays fire on your face, you'll set alight. Your enemies will see an invisible silhouette of a teammate running around on fire, again, completely giving away your disguise.
So, there you have it. Everything I know about being a Spy. Hope this helps.
