Spam sucked then, and it still does.
To each his own. Spam is seen as disruptive and a waste of time and space by some, you included I'm sure. But looking from our point of view, spam was mostly contained in the Biggest topics (I never did condone the other two after the first) and they never bothered anyone that much except for the few people who just wanted something to bitch about. The Biggest Topic to me was a separate little part of the NG community where everyone was friendly, there was no fighting, there was constant hilarity, and everything was good and right. Does something like that fall under your category of "sucks"? When I refer to spam, that's what I refer to. Not the spam expressly meant to annoy, like repeated topics chock full of goatse or whatever. Almost everyone enjoyed it, (with the exception of those few anti-spam zealots a la JockstrapJake) and we were all having fun. I'm not saying that the NG BBS should be pure spam, because it shouldn't. I enjoy serious discussions, even if they're about things that don't directly apply to anything in real life; in fact they're my favorite kind. My point is, after we lost half the fun and passtime of our BBS, we didn't have much to do. So many cool users left, and on came the narrow-minded hostile n00bs.
Man I went off topic.
