I'm no lawyer, but from what I've seen as long as you don't publish the image, you're free to use it without permission? Or is that just the "as long as they don't know..." factor taking place?

ya "as long as they don't know" is still illegal (if i'm right), but taking a picture and altering it isn't that big of a deal cause most people won't do anything with it (like you said publish). governments and companies can't do anything to stop it anyway.
