At least when the Repubs had the executive branch of the government, if a bill was trying to be passed that wasn't exactly beneficial for the general population, say the Dems were trying to pass it, it could be stopped and we wouldn't have to deal with it. However, now that the President and Congress is Democratic, if all the Dems in Congress vote yes on a bill or such, and all the Repubs said no, the Dems would win due to majority.
