Response to: Can't get AS3 preloader to work :( Posted February 9th, 2011 in Game Development

I found the cause of the issue, and it's got nothing to do with my ability to program!

SOLUTION:
Turns out that all my classes and bitmaps exported for actionscript had the checkbox marked "exported in frame 1".

All I needed to do was goto:
FILE>PUBLISH SETTINGS>FLASH>SETTINGS>EXPORT CLASSES IN FRAME 2
This step wasn't included in the instructions

Now I'm off to fix my flash :)

P.s. Next time someone asks question please don't treat them like a complete idiot.
Actually read the post, rather than just judging them by the topic name.

Response to: Can't get AS3 preloader to work :( Posted February 9th, 2011 in Game Development

Excuse me! Did you even read my previous post?

The preloader does work, just not as I had hoped.
I.e. by the time the preloader shows up the entire game has already loaded anyway.

PLEASE READ:
This is NOT a question about the Actionscript. but whether or not I had missed something specific in the Document Properties:
e.g. Do I meant to deselect Export in Frame 1 for all my classes and other resources
for the preloader to work?

Please consider reviewing:
Droid Grids Beta 0.18.3
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/56 1794

I haven't yet had a single intellegent review citing a gameplay feature they liked/disliked. :(
I need your help Please.

I've spent 3 weeks addressing the issues people had with the previous version (and adding new features):
1. Completely changed the menu layout to a more intuitive all mouse UI
2. Mouse aiming is now available for single player.
3. Set your own difficulty.
4.Reoptimized navigation system, so enemies can move in 8 directions and rarely miss a hit with a melee attack.
5. Fixed various glitches with existing weapons
6. Rocket launcher added
7.Turrets are much better at finding and gunning down enemies.
8. It's not Game over in Co-op mode so long as one player survives the round.
9.No longer a problem: Keyboard controls not responding (as long as the screen is in focus).
10. Later rounds are much more interesting and more challenging.

Response to: what is java ? Posted February 9th, 2011 in Programming

The basics of Java programming is quite easy to learn if you've learnt ActionScript 3.0.

The hard part of java is compiling into a workable executable .Jar file, and seeing which IDE and java development version works on your computer.
Though I heard that certain related libraries like LWJGL (Light Weight Java Games Library) which Minecraft uses can be quite difficult to work with.

After realizing that my flash game:
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/56 1794
takes a while to load.
I decided to take Newgrounds' suggestion and add a preloader.

I downloaded the .fla from this site, and copied its contents into the first frame of my project.

However when I tried uploading it again with the preloader, it seemed to have no effect whatsoever!
The flash game still displayed a white screen whilst loading
:( and the pre loader only appeared after it was finished loading.
I think I'm missing something. Please help!

P.s. I use Flash CS4 and am an ActionScript 3 programmer.

Response to: I can't delete my flash movies. Posted February 3rd, 2011 in Where is / How to?

Even if your flash submission receives a mediocre score, it's a Bad Idea to delete it yourself:

If you do, the system stupidly tells your users that your old submission was Blammed (with a complementary ugly dead creature) even though it passed the under judgement phase with flying colours.
Having the same page for both manually deleted and blammed submissions is really infuriating.
I contacted Wade about this, but he's probably not going to see my polite request, as his inbox is probably overflowing :(

In order to get more attention with a far newer and better version of your Flash Game/Movie/Music Track, I'd advise you to simply upload it under a different name (if it's different enough).

Response to: Delete submission Posted February 2nd, 2011 in Game Development

Don't delete your own submissions unless you really need to.

Upon deleting a submission, the system will say it was blammed regaurdless of how good your score was at deletion.

Response to: Zerovoting and Exposure. Posted January 17th, 2011 in Audio

Idiotic zero bombing terrorists could easily be stopped,

If either:
-Only the review scores determine whether or not a submission stays or is deleted.
-People can't vote on the same submission twice (unless it's been updated recently).

I spent over 3 weeks, updating my flash project Droid Grids (Currently Beta 0.17.4).
With the new upload (I deleted the old one):
I've got a rating of 2.73 (214 votes) yet not a single comment or review

Please consider reviewing the following:

Response to: How do I delete a flash submission? Posted January 17th, 2011 in Game Development

No, I deleted it manually, I went into my profile->Flash portal->Manage submission->Delete submission

It had a score of 2.35 upon "death" with 242 votes, and some positive reviews in the last weeks of feedback (Read the newgrounds FAQ, it passed)!

Yet a grotesque and insulting message still appears saying it was blammed.

The default page for deleted submissions is the same as that for blammed submissions.
It's damn immature and wouldn't take the admin long too fix, if they were listening

Response to: How do I delete a flash submission? Posted January 16th, 2011 in Game Development

I deleted a submission and the default page came up saying it was blamed (Not true, I had several positive reviews and a score above 2.3).

Seriously that's irritating. Newgrounds needs to have a seperate message for submissions that were deleted.

Well, I'm in an undergrad university course (2nd year computer science), so I can't be active every day.

However, I was hoping to gain recognition for the occassional reviews that I do post, As I tend to spend a decent amout of time fleshing them out.

Your reviews look fantastic, but you're going to have to be a bit more active to actually participate in a club...doesn't look like you've been very active at all since you signed up. You don't have a single b/p point and only 6 reviews to your name.

I suppose a reply to this post to ensure you aren't just a fly-by couldn't hurt your chances.

I'd consider myself an active reviewer, although I'm relatively new to this club and probably a tad too active here ;) I'm still trying to find out how a lot of things work so I can help out.

If anybody here knows where to start/end the request list and how many to do, let me know and I can take care of it while steph is busy with life ;) I wouldn't mind helping I just need to know, lol.

Droid Grids: Beta 0.16: Significant Update
Previous installments to this project, were aimed at A.I. and technical enhancements.
Beta 0.16 is more geared towards gameplay elements and I hope you find it fun! :)

Please Review and rate the game at: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/54 7591

New Features
* Radar
* Navigation HUD arrows to help you find downed turrets and the other player (co-op mode).
* Enemies spawn more rapidly as you progress.
* Turrets only respawn if you go to their specified ports and spend cash on them.
* Numerous, helpful in game messages.
Bug Fixes
* Camo mines are no longer triggered by turrets, nor do they explode the second that player 2 deploys them!
* Sound only plays when you are in range, of the source.
* Previously at the end of the game; the player got points for all the enemy units still alive onscreen as well! This has been corrected!

Response to: secureSWF broke my game! Posted September 9th, 2010 in Game Development

Okay there's definitely a problem with the older version.
It won't play properly on anything, older than flash player 10.1!

Kindisoft, please look at the following link and give your diagnoses of what went wrong:
http://glider521al.110mb.com/GamemakerPr ojects/droidGridsOld.html

Some of my old encryption settings:
Dynamic code wrapping: minimum
Control Flow obscuration: 40%

<begin Rant>:
The old version was seen voted on by over 200 people (at least half of whom saw a broken SWF).
and received 3 bad reviews as a result.
I could really need some reviews from people who played the newly uploaded game to counter this.
<End rant>

Response to: secureSWF broke my game! Posted September 7th, 2010 in Game Development

Wow, nice customer support.

Well the version you tried, was the one reuploaded with slightly lower security settings.
The one with the original security settings can be found at:
http://glider521al.110mb.com/GamemakerPr ojects/droidGrids.html

It may not have been the encryption, it could be that those complaining of such problems were just using an older version of flash player.

secureSWF broke my game! Posted September 7th, 2010 in Game Development

I bought the standard edition for secureSWF to encrypt my flash game, only to find that, after I protected it, it would do weird things like:

-Credits/instructions/stage would rapidly flash by in a loop.
-Sometimes, no objects would spawn in the level (except the player).

I thought I found a workaround, when I set "Dynamic Code Wrapping" to minimum. The game ran as intended in Flash Player 10 (It was exported for Flash Player 9.0).

I than proceeded to upload it to newgrounds:
www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1196384

To my horror, some people said the game didn't load properly, or would site the same 2 errors as above.
My suspicion is that securesSWF, caused the game to become unreadable to older versions of flash player.

Any help is appreciated.
Its incredibly annoying to receive bad reviews just because the demo didn't load for some people.

Response to: Review Request Club Posted September 7th, 2010 in Clubs & Crews

Please review my first flash game:
A top down shooter known as Droid Grids:

NOTE: It seems that all the negative reviews were because the game didn't load for some people.
The game was tested in Flash Player 10 (it was exported for flash player 9)
and encrypted with secureSWF.
if the game doesn't load properly than you may be using an older version of flash player.

Droid Grids Beta V0.15 Posted September 7th, 2010 in Video Games

Try my game at:

Survival Mode:
You (upto 2 players) must defend yourself against an army of marvolent droids, which can find you no matter where you hide in the map (unless their gunned down by automated turrets first). You are equipped with a regenerating shield, armour that can instantaneously intergrate any equipment item found on the field, plenty of cool weapons and support from Automated Turrets.

Your shield regenerates over time whilst your armour does not.
The rate of shield recovery depends upon state of your armour, so remember to take cover when nesscesary.
The game ends once all your lives are depleted, in Co-op mode you share the same pool of lives.

Equipment include:
-Nano bot med kits (rapidly recharge shields and repair armour)
-Ammunition packs
-Cloaking device
-Automated Turrets (currently these respawn after a fixed delay, but this will change in future versions)

Weapons Include:
-Pistol (armour piercing rounds)
-Shotgun
-Plasma SMG
-Flamethrower
-Frag Grenades
-Camo mines (just remember where you dropped these, or you'll get a nasty surprise)
-More to come...

Enemies Include:
-Droid minor: Armed with light plasma weaponary, melee attacks and occasionally equipped with shield gauntlets, they form the backbone of the army.
-Sprinter Droids: These pests, like to get up close and personal, meleeing you with their shock gloves
-Hover mines: Can hover over pits, and will home in and explode on their targets. Try and destroy these whilst they're still nearby other enemies.
-Droid Majors: These are the avant gaurde of the army, not only do they have regenerating shields like the player but weapons to match...
-More to come...

Terrain Objects:
-Barrels filled with explosive radioactive material
-Void Tiles (pits)
-Panel switches
-Forcefield bridges (Can be activated with panel switches).
-More to come...

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS:
2 users have reported the game doesn't load for them, possibly because secureSWF messed up the interface on older versions of flash player.
I tested it in flash player 10 (it was exported for flash player 9)
If the game doesn't load properly, please state the flash version your using.

FEATURES UPCOMING:
This game, is still WIP, but with this SWF, I hope to demonstrate the potential of my game engine.
There are many, more features and gameplay modes to come:
-Civilian Escourt mode
-Reactor Defense mode
-Dropships
-A more complex system of rounds and waves.
-System for purchasing weapon upgrades/ armour permutations

Please let me know what you think
