I know I shouldn't bring up the war, but France, Germany and Italy seem to lead the EU and Britain the only european power who really stood up to the axis and liberate france wasn't allowed in until the 70's and still gets the raw end of the deal.
Britain is not sure at the moment if it wants to be a part of the EU. We still feel a certain loyalty to USA (well the government does anyway) because of the Special Relationship we've had with them for quite a while (look it up on Wikipedia if you do not know what I'm talking about).
If you want evidence of this look at how we are shying away from taking up the Euro. If we take up the Euro people fear in 50 years time we will have joined the United States of Europe, although if Europe wants to have a big say in world affairs in the 21st century this is really the only option. Otherwise we're just a load of crap old countries that used to be important.
