Oh yeah... forgot about the physical knobs. It's a pain to have to change parameters via mouse, and even though in the long-run there's simplicity in "learning", the setup of a MIDI keyboard to "learn" parameters must be a pain too.

Topic: Analog/Hardware vs Digital/Software

Now I know this has been discussed before but probably with a wider or narrower scope than I'm looking for. I also realize that most of the audio community here, including myself, are mostly software-based. Please give constructive, objective input as opposed to biased and subjective opinions.

Basically, the question here is the old analog vs digital synth argument. Impossible, as some might say, as answering the question Mac vs PC, etc...

In my opinion (I haven't worked with hardware synths to obtain any empirical evidence):
Software Pros and Hardware Cons:
-There are just more sounds available via software, simply said. There's freeware and just more programs out there then synthesizer keyboards.
-Portable. MIDI keyboard + Laptop and you have everything you need. If you have multiple hardware synths... that could be a pain in the ass really fast.
Hardware Pros and Software Cons:
-Hardware is just the ultimate plug and play deal. Turn it on and play... you don't need a computer, unlike with software synths.
-There must be some kind of quality superiority or there wouldn't be much going for the hardware market.

That's all I have based on research and guesswork. Considering all sounds, let's discuss which is the better of the two... sound quality being the focal point, I guess.

And another note... I'm not talking about vintage hardware synths, but rather the later and more sophisticated breed, for example the Korg M3, Triton, the Yamaha Motif, and the Roland Fantom G Series.

Just set deadlines. The lack of deadlines just about killed the last major collaboration project, the "Continue the Song Game".

Otherwise, sounds good. I'm not sure if my playing ability is good enough for a guitar-focused collab, but I'd be more than willing to give it a try.

You're way too modest, man.

Given your limited hardware and software, I'm not sure what to suggest. How's your musical ability, instrumental and otherwise? If they're just meh, I can see where you're coming from, but if you've got something, you might want to pump your rig up to par.

Posers cross all genres. Your initial post aimed it solely at guitarists. Think before making a thread, and do your research before labeling anything a "shit assumption".

If anything's causing the downfall of music, it's the widespread availability of programs (I'm not denouncing their affordability, but it has opened new doors to people who don't deserve to walk through) that bring on an influx of shitty artists, coupled with the abuses of the only filter system, record labels.

Topic: Fruity Loops or Logic Studio?

Posted: 04/24/08 09:33 PM

Forum: Audio

I think a close comparison would be FL8 and Logic Express 8.

Logic Studio has a lot of almost unnecessary features for the beginning audio artist.

Quote MacWorld's Review:
"What you'll miss are Logic Pro's surround capabilities and some of its more sophisticated tools, like the Sculpture synth and Space Designer and Delay Designer effects. More importantly, you won't get any of Logic Studio's bundled items, like the Jam Packs, MainStage performance app, Soundtrack Pro audio editor, and WaveBurner burning and mastering tool. If the main draw of Logic is the editing facility and you don't need all of those extras, or if you're on a budget, Express is a solid choice. But with Logic Pro at half its original price, the Studio upgrade may be worth it-especially if you want to work with surround sound or play live onstage."

Logic Studio comes with a lot of sounds. If you don't have that many synths and samplers, it may be worth it, but if you're just looking for the DAW, Logic Express might be the better buy.

Okey dokey. But next time I believe that for sake of limited momentum, there be a set and strict deadline for the next CTSG.

2nd-Edition's team will definatly make the deadline. I think all he has to do is splice all of what we done together. WritersBlock's team is the one that is having major problems with the deadline.

While I do feel that consideration has to be taken into account, 2 months is stretching it. Even if we went a week per collaborator, this is the 10th week. Stagnating progress was a pain in the ass for all of us, and was definitely not fun for the first guys, who, motivated by the momentum of the initial excitement, finished their parts relatively quickly.

Awesome and Bitchtones are on track. I haven't gotten an exact count from BT, but Awesome only has two parts to go. If only one team is finished, then the deadline obviously has to be moved. But if two?

You move the deadline past May 1, you're buying a ticket straight into July. For education on all levels, it's finals time in the month of May. Those who work, work as always. But the students work harder during this season. I don't know the ages of the remaining collaborators, but the NG community is relatively young, which gives me the impression that moving the deadline past May 1 is asking for a quarter-of-a-year project.

But yes, if two teams still remain incomplete by May 1, by all means, move the deadline. If you guys want to move it back anyway, do so. I just hope the next CTSG moves along faster.
