Now I know this has been discussed before but probably with a wider or narrower scope than I'm looking for. I also realize that most of the audio community here, including myself, are mostly software-based. Please give constructive, objective input as opposed to biased and subjective opinions.
Basically, the question here is the old analog vs digital synth argument. Impossible, as some might say, as answering the question Mac vs PC, etc...
In my opinion (I haven't worked with hardware synths to obtain any empirical evidence):
Software Pros and Hardware Cons:
-There are just more sounds available via software, simply said. There's freeware and just more programs out there then synthesizer keyboards.
-Portable. MIDI keyboard + Laptop and you have everything you need. If you have multiple hardware synths... that could be a pain in the ass really fast.
Hardware Pros and Software Cons:
-Hardware is just the ultimate plug and play deal. Turn it on and play... you don't need a computer, unlike with software synths.
-There must be some kind of quality superiority or there wouldn't be much going for the hardware market.
That's all I have based on research and guesswork. Considering all sounds, let's discuss which is the better of the two... sound quality being the focal point, I guess.
And another note... I'm not talking about vintage hardware synths, but rather the later and more sophisticated breed, for example the Korg M3, Triton, the Yamaha Motif, and the Roland Fantom G Series.
