Wait, if they're already reading the rule, why have them type it out?

Bans are meant to give the violators time to reflect on their actions and review the rules.

Saying 'if they are reading the rule, why type it out?' is comparable to saying 'If you accept the terms of service and privacy policy, why should we be pissed if Microsoft lands a lawsuit after ripping 200-300 dollar merchandise?' Nobody reads the terms of service, and the 'line system' is simply an enforcer to this concept, and maybe, just MAYBE, 'reason' will take root in the reader's mind and they will understand the rules.

Please note that if you read the rules in the first place, you would know what to do and what not to do. The line system doesn't produce the perfect poster, but it can produce the intelligible one.

It would be like the "I will not..." on a chalkboard you might see in a public school, because if you're going to act like an idiot kid here, you might as well get treated like one here.
Idiocy shouldn't be a bannable offense. Besides, writing all of that out becomes a chore, not a lesson learned. You might say that if they don't want to write it out, they shouldn't break the rules, but then it becomes not wanting to write it out and will have nothing to do with becoming a better poster.

Even if a chore, it's still something they don't look forward to if banned. Besides, this isn't banning the idiocy, more like recurrent idiocy. The ban is the punishment, and the lines are implicating the reasons for the ban. Unlearning Idiots gone, knowledgable poster reinstated. Again, if they are caught again, more than likely they will face more and more lines come time.

That way simply banning them will not only tell them what they did was wrong, but also instruct them on how to be a better poster in the future. Well, that's my 2 cents.
Punishment like this makes people hate those that enforce it, not respect them. It doesn't make people better posters, it makes them look for loopholes and new ways they can get away with offenses.

Mods, those chosen to be capable of keeping the BBS orderly, would be the only ones able to implement this feature. In addition, guys like EyeLovePoozy aren't out to make friends on a majorly 12-17 year old populated forum. They like those who adhere to the rules that make the BBS what it is, and dislike those who screw crap up for everyone here.

In short, Moderators are here to moderate. If ignorant fucktards hate them, I think they will sleep soundly nonetheless.

So please...let' s just see how this works before you start anticipating things.

That is cool

Yep, this would be done so at the mods discretion based on the severity of violation and previous history of the violator, and the banned person would remain banned until they would have finished the lines from the rules page assigned to them.

We already tackled this in the end of the first page/ beginning of the 2nd. We went on to discuss how there would be frequent incoming alts but Poozy stated how he can quickly round them all up in a few clicks anyway, and said that Goldfish can get an Applet for this up and running fairly soon. In addition, I've heard a mod state that anyone caught in the process of attempting to copy/paste would face even harsher punishment.

Think of how clogged that forum would get. In addition it would only give spammers more leeway to screw off more people and spam unfunny crap.

No...a Java Applet would be sufficient and efficient. Considering how I've garnered the support of 5-6+ moderators, I think this idea has more substance than you give it credit for. Give it a chance and see how many spammers will come back to the site.

It's almost like the idea conforms to a Darwinistic principle: The bad posters die off (metaphorically) and the strong and good posters continue posting. If not all, most spammers and obscene douchebags will eventually ebb away from the BBS. That's just my hope, and seeing how much power is given to the mods and their capability to use it, I have faith that this concept can do some good.

Then again, we shall see in time. I'll cross my fingers nonetheless.

Sounds good. I'm assuming there will be a Java Applet for this 'line function', am I right? This seems to be the most conventional way of going about it.

Response to: A punishment for Mods to consider. Posted March 10th, 2011 in General

Since a couple people have compared this to school, let me show you.

Think of a ban as a detention. The more and more detention one recieves ultimately results in a Saturday School (And ultimately could result in expulsion). If you have any common sense you'll see that this has no effect on those who consistanly make trouble and only has an impact on those willing to avoid the punishment. Think of the 'repetition of rules broken' punishment as going to the chalkboard after school and writing the violations of school policy on the chalkboard around 100 times. This was effective since it was done on the student's time, and from repeating their mistakes on chalkboard in became embedded into their minds that such behavior in class was against the rules.

Seeing how BBS posting is a privelidge and not a site mandated right, as education is a right from the high school level, this means that it can be taken away if the violator infringes on the rules. As we can see, bans, like detentions, hold little disciplinary substance over frequent fucktards, and the only people we see that this punishment really takes root in is in the misunderstood violator.

The reason why I proposed this method was to ensure that this discipline would focus primarily on those who are unaffected by the bans. Seeing how those who are 'misunderstood' are few and far between, this form of punishment would be less in severity as opposed to the response given to idiots who think it's funny to clog up the BBS with infantile banter and trolling. I really hope the mods aren't trolling me, seeing as how this would lessen the work for them and encourage less trolling and shiz on the forum, but as they say 'que sera sera'.

Please know I do this for the betterment of the BBS and hope that my ideas are presented in a useful manner.

Hey, it's their time. Might as well be wasted on the offenders themselves than have the mods waste their time repeating the process.

With this, I kinda want to shift the emphasis from the mods spending a majority of their time trying to ban all offenders to offenders spending the majority of their time working to remove their ban.

Start off with a day ban.

I wouldn't jump straight to the writing punishment, it would drive so many creative and funny individuals from this site, creating some sort of absolutist hellhole. But at least after the first ban there should a chart of how the system works, within the ban messages; nice little table.

Thanks for adding your point to the whole bit. I do agree that there should be a warning in the form of the ban, but once they've displayed their willfull ignorance or sheer stupidity, then throw the damn book at them. Literally.

Although I doubt anyone who was prospective for a ban was neither funny nor creative.

To build on your proposal.

1st offense: 3 day ban and write 10 times the rules you have violated.

2nd offense: Weeklong ban and 25 times per rule.

3rd offense Monthlong ban and 100 times per rule broken.

4th+ Offense *Insert mod mandated ban* and 200 times per rule broken. Each violation would add 100 times extra.

See, it's a concept that can be brought forth and be improved. Thanks for your input.

Is anyone else getting the feeling that if people are that insecure about breaking a rule like "Linking to pornographic or NSFW material without a clear warning" or...

-Discussing illegal activities - including, but not limited to: ROMs, cracks, warez and hacking.
-Posting any member's real life information without permission.
-Posting pornographic (including cartoon porn) or NSFW (Not Safe For Work) material. Exceptions include NG staff or if you're posting to the Art Forum and it's relevant rather than downright perverted.
-Chasing / harassing / flaming other users, regardless of who instigated it.
-Recreating a thread that has been created recently. Use the search bar before hitting "New Topic".

...they need better things to do with their time, or actually spark a unique and intelligible topic. Like I've said previously, if you have a problem with the rules, then you can do things like play the games, watch the movies, or listen to music.

Jesus Christ, this isn't some Nazi brigade. It's a repetition of forum rules to get it through to you that being an idiot isn't welcome behavior. In addition, it wouldn't be a spam thread, but a Java Applet or the like separate from the forum and once you do what is required, you're set. The only people having a problem with this would be repeat offenders, trolls, and idiot spammers.

If you do leave, then have fun on 4chan.
