Not quite a bus, but here goes:

Last summer I was on a trip to New Orleans. As part of the usual touristy stuff, I took a ride on a streetcar with the members of my group, and about halfway through the route, this homeless looking and very drunk black guy got on, sat next to me, and started screaming incoherent shit and complaining about "those damn fucking tourists on my trolley."

I'm still counting the days until the ruby/sapphire remake. :)

It seems like the main reason for the remakes, though, is to provide a method for filling up the national dex without depending on a previous generation. With the existence of the DSi and its lack of a GBA slot, Nintendo is trying to move away from depending on pal park to obtain Pokemon from a previous generation. with heartgold and soulsilver, it should now be possible to complete the national dex by catching Pokemon from within generation 4 games. The same is kinda true for firered/leafgreen. After all, it's impossible to import Pokemon from a generation 2 game. period.

On an unrelated note, I just obtained my Arceus from toys r us yesterday. I would have rather received the azure flute and caught him myself, but I'm not complaining about having the alpha Pokemon. the special moveset is pretty awesome, though.

There are two ways to approach this.

1. Life goes on. Don't feel bad. Most people don't even own a shiny, and many don't even know what a shiny is (this one really applies to the kiddies, but you know what I mean).

2. Hunt for shinies. there are two ways to dramatically increase your odds of finding one:
Masuda method, a way of increasing your odds of finding a shiny through breeding, and the Poke radar (scroll down a bit), an item for chaining wild Pokemon in tall grass. The actual odds of finding one during longer chains (40+) are still unknown, but it has been proven to be MUCH more likely that you'll encounter a shiny, and there have been reports of people finding several shinies in a row during chains.

The choice is yours.

Topic: People suck at explaining free will

Posted: 10/19/09 01:30 AM

Forum: Politics

What makes me really believe in free will is the fact that creativeness and emotions exist. To an extent, these are the two things that sets humans apart from animals and machines. intelligence has nothing to do here.

I dare you to find a computer that can compose a symphony, or a cat that can write mystery novels. Most animals rely only on instinct (all actions are based on a need or are in response to external stimuli) and sometimes what little knowledge they are capable of (consider how a monkey is smart enough to use simple tools to accomplish tasks). A computer is nothing but a program set to perform a specific function. A sense of randomness can be implemented to simulate creativity or actual intelligence, but technology will never to be able to accomplish actual free will, as long as the program is nothing but cold hard 1's and 0's.

There really is no definitive explanation behind emotions. Some animals, such as dags, can possess some basic emotions, but only humans generally feel complex emotions. FEELING something is definitely not out of instinct or part of a complex program. I can't explain it very well, but it's one of the only things that's truly human. Again, machines could simulate emotion, but it it would be nothing but the result of a command or a line of code. The complex mental processes involved in feeling emotions could not be from anything other than true free will.

I also want to believe that free will doesn't exist. Many of our actions as humans are actually reactions in response to other actions, despite how cleverly disguised they are. Take, for example, deciding to go into higher education. It would be in response to wanting a better career, in response to being able to afford everything needed, in response to surviving and being able to afford basic necessities.

So that's my insight on free will. Feel free to criticize and pick apart my theory.

This is a definite possibility. It sounds like you just have a weak stomach, and pie crust, which tends to be on the heavier side, may upset it. You stomach may just not be able to digest pie crust. It may just be an ingredient in the crust. Does you body react negatively to anything else?

I know someone who has a weak stomach and his body can't digest corn. He isn't allergic to it, because he can eat corn that is processed enough (cornmeal, etc). Whenever he eats corn, though, he gets extremely ill and says he feels like he's going to die. The sickness always passes, but a few times when he's eaten corn by mistake I felt like I needed to call 911 and get his stomach pumped.

Taken from Bulbanews today regarding the 2010 Pokemon video game world championships:

Another update of the World Championships site features some of the rules of the Video Game World Championships. Among these is the notable new rule regarding legendary Pokémon. It is now confirmed that not all legendary Pokémon will be allowed to enter, with Pokémon that can only be obtained from events being ineligible. These are Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys (all Formes), Phione (an offspring of an event-only Pokémon), Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin (both Formes) and Arceus (all types). The Pokémon legendary Pokémon no longer banned are Mewtwo, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia and Giratina (both Formes). Of these Pokémon, only two at most may be used in the same team.

What the HELL just happened? I think the entire metagame just turned upside-down.

It makes people think that all newgrounders are complete idiots who love to shout out the name of a website just for fun.

Seriously, don't be so stupid. There are a million better ways you can cause a ruckus without coming on as a complete whore and/or getting your ass thrown out. If you like the site, that's cool. Wear an NG t-shirt and a silly hat. Besides, the best thing to do in a crowd is to try to get the entire audience to do something. (chant something obnoxious, clap in unison, etc.)

That sounds like fun, but I would think something TOO gimmicky like that would get old quick. Well, for me, anyway.

I've actually thought of putting together a different kind of gimmick team, like my "turtle team" - Venusaur, Blastoise, Lapras, Shuckle, Torkoal, and Torterra. It would be fun to use a team like this, but due to the inevitability of getting raped in any standard battle, they would only be used in-game.

I guess an 80 special attack with a base 95 power move has some decent KO potential behind it if it's used to take down physical walls with a 2X or 4X weakness to fire.

Switch Fire Blast for flamethrower, there's nothing worse than missing when you need to hit D:

Someone seems to be a fan of flamethrower :D

Oh well, you do have a point. Maybe the mistake I've been making in the past was going the high-risk, high-reward route. The raw power in fire blast is really appealing to me, but as you said, there's nothing worse than it missing when I need it to hit the most. And I doubt heat wave would be much better. the 100 base power doesn't make up for the 90% accuracy.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm always trying to develop, improve, and refine my team for the battle frontier. Right now this is what my team will look like:

Garchomp@focus sash
Jolly nature
- outrage
- stone edge
- earthquake
- fire fang (simply here for type coverage and so I don't get walled by Bronzong or Skarmory)
So he's a demon for a lead, and my main attacker. If I can't get a super effective hit and my opponent's name isn't Weavile, I usually outrage away.

Heatran@choice scarf
modest nature
- Fire blast
- earth power
- explosion
- dragon pulse
With a choice scarf, Heatran can become an effective revenge killer that can sweep if the need arises, as very little resists this set. Once Heatran is done attacking, I'll switch to Bronzong, and if I'm switching in while low on health, I'll immediately try to blow up my enemy.

Bronzong@leftovers
I forget the nature, but I know it's not the best choice.
- gyro ball
- earthquake
- hypnosis
- explosion
Standard wall. I chose Bronzong because of all of his "lol I'm a steel type" resistances combined with levitate, making for a safe switch-in on almost anything. While in, I'll try to status the opponent, then switcgh out our start attacking. Again, if low on health, I'll go kamikaze on the opponent's ass. Because of this and the fact that he doesn't hit very hard, I usually try not to send out Bronzong as my last Pokemon.

Opinions? I'm just testing out this team at the battle tower so I'll post results later.

Forum: General

At 9/18/09 07:03 AM, Im-A-Pirate wrote: Now, you may be wondering "What's pirate day?", Well, It's a day where everyone pretends to be a pirate through use of sterotypes that they think is real, such as we always say "Arr" before and at the end of every sentence, drink nothing but rum, and live on the sea. This, however, is not true, and disgusts me that people even think such.

I know what you mean, but the ridiculous stereotypes are what make talk like a pirate day fun. Real pirates were basically like any sailors during the time, but they were a bit dirtier, they stole shit, hijacked ships, and raped their wimmenz all in a day's work.

In my opinion, the stereotypical pirate is way cooler than the real pirate. Stereotypes like these were made because that's what the people thought was fun and cool, and went with it. Did all ninjas move around by doing flips and swinging on shit? Did all cowboys ride around on horses shooting people?

These are just popular depictions, rather than stereotypes. When we think of pirates, we want to act like pirates that bury treasure, say "arr" before every sentence, and drink rum all day. What fun is it to act like a REAL pirate?

Besides, any person with half a brain knows what real pirates are/were like.

I promise you this is not a joke thread or story thread. I was at my computer, browsing NG and watching TV. I turned on my desk chair about 100 degrees from my computer to reach the remote and change the channel, and after about 10 seconds of flipping channels, I turn back around to my computer and see that MY MOUSE AND KEYBOARD ARE FUCKING UPSIDE-DOWN. I have a wireless mouse with quite a bit of battery weight holding it down, so it would have taken a deliberate effort to turn it upside-down. Also, if it somehow got knocked over, it wouldn't be in the exact same spot it was when I left it. And the keyboard; both the mouse and the keyboard would have made a noise if moved, even by human hands. I'm in my room alone, it's nighttime, my desk is set up in a way that nobody could be near it but me, and my TV volume is low enough to have heard something like that. My paranoid mind jumps right to a paranormal or supernatural cause, but what does NG think of this? it happened only a couple minutes ago, and I'm really freaked out right now.
