Obviously lyrics matter. They give the song a meaning. Also, people won't listen to a song just because it has a meaning, other things matter as well.

Firstly, I think the cases of A.D.D and other learning abilities were quite serious.
Secondly, the winning basketball team were apathetic towards the losing teams lack of skill. I think a lot of people would feel like crap if they hadn't won a game in 4 seasons and, on top of that, they would be losing by a hell of a lot in every game.
But the principal shouldn't have let the other team win. It's undermining their abilities and the winning team won fair and square.
