sub-mariner, the whizzer and others, fought crime as the human torch until 1955.

when he went nova and died.

but an artificial, man can know only artificial death!
after many years, the mad thinker reactivated his body--but not his mind--to use against the fantastic four--but being incomplete he lost to the new human torch

and fell into the the clutches of the living robot then known as ultron-5

ultron had been created by henry pym known then as goliath but the intelligence pym had given it was unstable! ultron wanted to kill its *father* --even as it wanted to 'father' a 'son' since this was physically impossible for it, it made use of vision.

he found the aged professor horton and forced him to refashion vision to his current state replacing his ability to flame on with the ability to alter his mass and solidity--and addind the ability to asorb and discharge solar power through the jewel in his brow!

finally in his (ultron) desireto make vision more 'mechanical' like himself, ultron bulk-erased his (vision's) mind and gave him a new voice and personality-incidentally using the brain patterns of wonder man as a model!

but he (vision) was not to be a second simon williams--mechanical or otherwise! form that seed vision grew into someone unique!

ultron planned to use vision against the avengers, but his mind like ultron's could not be restrained from independent thought!

feeling the good within hin (vision)--though not then knowing what happend vision turned against him (ultron) and joined the avengers instead!

there vision met his future bride-wanda
