Topic: how do you do 3D in flash?

Posted: 09/24/09 05:04 PM

Forum: Flash

First of all, for some of you, please know what you're talking about before making blanket statements like "Flash doesn't do 3D."

I make my living making 3D things in flash, like augmented reality. Here's my suggestion:

Use Papervision3D, since the internal, simple 3D in Flash CS4 is based on it, and because its totally free to use for commercial projects. Using a different, proprietary engine, then adding in-game advertising could land you in court, unless you want to pay the several thousand dollar licensing fee.

Second download the free Flex SDK, learn it, and make the program with your favorite text editor and the command prompt. The Flash IDE was originally created for keyframe animations and doesn't translate well to traditional software development, which is best for 3D work in ActionScript or any other language.

@blubfaceproduction, when you look at this, it will be extremely daunting at first. Have heart, take the time to learn it, and find yourself able to do more than 99% of the people on these forums. Everything else you do in ActionScript after this project will be easy.

Then more than likely that enter frame function is never being called. Make sure that the program is getting to it.

I'm honestly surprised that Tom still uses Flash 8. I can speak for myself that I wouldn't have a roof over my head if all I knew was Flash 8 and AS2. Those skills just aren't marketable anymore. Search craigslist for Flash Developer jobs, and while you might see AS2 listed as a wanted skill once in a blue mood, it's always listed with AS3 as a requirement.

While the main changes to CS4 are visual, and you can make an AS2 that looks just as good as something done in AS3, companies aren't looking for that skillset anymore. I press on CS4 in these discussions, because I'd like to see some of you younger guys, who love to code Flash as much as I do, make a career out of it, like I have.

I still own a TI-99 4A computer. My grandparents gave it too me when I was 5 (dating myself). I wrote my first program on it when I was 6. I belong to a TI-99 programming group that still produces programs for it, and I wrote one recently to do retro visual effects for concerts. The point is, while I love programming in TI Extended Basic, I'm never going to make a dime doing it. While you still can make some money with Flash 8 and AS2, that will change within the next few years, or sooner.

Learn the new stuff while it's new so you know it well when its the current stuff.

The only way that I know of storing waveform information from a microphone is via the NetConnection and NetStream classes and Flash Media Server. The Microphone class only has a function to show the level of input.

Just wanted to reiterate this point. Nobody who gets paid to do Flash full time uses Flash 8.

I suggest buying the CS4, because it's always best to know the new stuff right from the start, and not develop any bad habits that might hinder you in the future. Take a look into indexing colors and exporting your layers as 8 bit png files. You won't have alpha for smooth edging, but with some work, you can still make it look really good. 8 bit png files are usually even smaller than jpgs, and have transparency.

They have no bearing on whether a memory hack will work they just determine if other classes in your code can access those variables. Once that shit's been compiled they don't mean anything.

Actually, I am aware of that, it would be a way to block embedded JavaScript hacks, since I'm assuming that they're using basic callbacks for some of the stuff, which requires the property to be public.

One thing: do you have Illustrator? I would suggest recreating the logo from scratch in either Illustrator or directly in Flash so all the lines are clean. It's obvious that it's a trace of a bitmap right now.

One simple way to help the situation (no such thing as unhackable), is to use proper OOP programming and let none of your variables in your main class be public.

I'm not sure how CheatEngine handles uint (hexadecimal) numbers. Maybe it's looking for regular integers.

Create test swfs and run them through CheatEngine to see what works best.

My current wallpaper is an illustration using a really cool, fake 3D effect done in Photoshop. With some creative programming, something similar could be done in real time in Flash. Since I first saw it, it's been in the back of my mind to do a game in this style, but unfortunately I'm too busy with paid projects right now.
