I see you scheming.
I would have said "gender", but I believe the character limit in the title area is another [rant-able] story...
Besides, the word "gender" actually refers to appearance and/or state of mind of a person, where "sex" truly refers to, with respect to Laqur, whether you [literally] have ovaries or not, or at least that's what I learned in a sociology course.
It hasn't been until fairly recently I've taken notice that no matter which gender/sex the reviewer may claim in their profile, NG appears to assume they're all male ("Tell [NG member uname] what you think of his review") when I want to comment on their reviews.
Can't say which would be a more suiting fit: either to filter the reviews to profile-specific genders "...what you think of [specified gender's] review" or "....what you think of his/hers review" or "...what you think of their review"; All of the preceding would be nice, seeing that not every NG member here is a male, from what I've gathered.
It might not seem like a big deal, but a number of [female] reviewers may get annoyed if they're all referred to as "dude" or the like by the original song poster in their comment.

Most forums with BBCode offer the following codes for their users:
Bold -> We have that. "b" or "strong" both work fine.
Underline -> We have that as well.
Italic -> Yep, it's there.
Posting URLs -> I think it's a lot easier to post links with HTML code then with BBCode. With BBCode I'm never too sure if I have to put the URL in quotation marks or not (some forums require the link to be in quotation marks, other forums don't recognize a link if it is put into quotation marks...). With HTML, it's always quotation marks for the URL-
Other options BBCode can offer:
Color -> like colouring the text are just annoying. I never read posts by users who feel the need to ALWAYS chose a certain colour.
Size -> Not a good idea on NG. Also, size=1 is just annoying to read.
The better to make the NG BBS "bi-lingual"! At times I get nervous for example, (like I am now) when I quote someone, and when I finish trimming away 'til I have what I'm quoting specifically, to make sure the quote is in a quoted format, and not running off into my words, which is why I feel more comfortable being able to use BBcode's [quote=] [/quote] for my case, to better secure that I don't ever have that error, as opposed to the ":" way (the HTML way of quoting, I presume).

If you screw up with linking then you are informed of it. That and there isn't much need for a preview feature, if you have firefox then it spell checks for you as well.
EditWill probably never happen because it would be heavily abused.
BBcode and color (optional). Those two are pretty useless here actually. Changing the text color would lead to people purposely choosing colors that would be an eyesore and the four HTML tags you can use are pretty much BBcodes.
Preview helps in cases where you want to make sure that whatever [HTML] coding or linking you have done is exactly the way you want it done. One may want to share a link that may have a complex set of characters within it, that could mean the difference between a family friendly witty image and a an adult XXX surprise...or just not look at the link at all and HOPE that it was the right one after all.
Edit helps in cases where when a poster sees their question answered and wants to acknowledge it immediately, NG's "double post" warning pop-up won't be triggered as easily. Plus admins should still be able to see the original post for what it was, whether it was appropriate or not.
Even if they're only related by name alone, I think if NewGrounds wants to call these forums a BBS, users should be able to use BBcode (that is, if they desire to be able to perform functions that aren't pre-made in the "Quick HTML" (while we're on the topic, it's annoying to have to drag whatever you had created with a Quick HTML button, from the end of the post, into the area where you want it in your post) menu such as linking an image. I'm not a web design major; for the record this is the only forum I've seen where it' HTML-only.
Color as I indicated is OPTIONAL, very few forums support it, afaik, but it's nice to have.
I think I understand NG may not have wanted it, as it may somehow take away from the whole "orange and black" theme throughout the site.
I've been an NG member barely a quarter of a year and already am starting to get tired of this particular forum, out of all the other forums I've been a member of, lacking the following features: Preview, Edit, BBcode, and color (optional).
Even RuneScape's "feature strict" forums gave users the ability to preview their post(s). This question is really geared towards the administrators here, but if regular forum members have an answer to this from previous inquiry, I'm all ears.
Yay, it worked! (told ya'll, I'm a total NG n00b!) Looking back, I guess all those other times, I just linked my works under words or sentences, not realizing how gosh darn EZ it was to do this! Thank you all! I'm glad I almost made someone's day <(^-^)>

exactly!
I got that part, now is there a way I can have the Logic Train come to a complete stop?
That is, now that I have included this picture, how do I link it to my song?
From time to time I'll see Audio Portal members post on threads their works linked within an image of the work from their audio submissions list.
I could do this deftly if BBCode could be used, but apparently this is an HTML based BBS. I can capture the images of the works in my list, but I wouldn't know firsthand how to use HTML to have it embed a link within to the said work.
Plz help.
At 1/9/11 05:21 PM, FairSquare wrote: Also, look. There's a new submission list.
I'm aware of the "new submission" list, but sometimes the listeners might not want to wander through 30 songs to find out if the work was done by a new artist or someone that's been an AP mem here since 2003.
Going off the "color coding" idea I saw in another thread on this forum, perhaps it would help to have a color for works that have been submitted by first time AP artists, just for the first submission.
At 1/9/11 05:20 PM, FairSquare wrote: There are a lot of newbies. A lot of them suck.
You want to put all the newbies on the frontpage?
Look at me, I'm still a newbie as far as I'm concerned (been here barely even a quarter of a year, as of this post) ; but even some of the songs that ppl, or I personally thought really "sucked" or weren't all that good, still are liked enough by a number of listeners to be downloaded or even in some cases, favorited.
As is commonplace with forums all over the world, I think it would be a great idea to have a spot on the Audio Portal frontpage where new artists are recognized, once they submit their first song/piece/beat/SFX.
This will give new AP ppl a chance to have more [temporary] visibility for perhaps no more than a week, to be seen by other artists/listeners, leading to a possibly quicker and bigger fanbase, from the start!
This way, "newbies" won't necessarily have to rely on the crutch of having their audio implemented to a Flash submission, in order to have both them and their works popularized.
Thoughts and suggestions as always are welcome!
I found out about a particular feature of GarageBand by accident last year (2010), when I was trying to find some information on MIDI music production, I think.
Have a look at this!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYvQuelOS qI
Note: this isn't the exact video I recall finding, but it still talks about the same thing.
One word of caution for those using this feature is to be sure to contact/credit the original MIDI file author before considering sharing/uploading a [edited] GarageBand version of their work with others, even if it's cover music of a video game song.
Here comes Faery, representin' for the GarageBand ppl out here!
It's a fairly new project, but I'm not sure it'll actually find itself on NewGrounds once its done. Got a little "source code" at the bottom (I usually work with piano roll, but showed this for the heck of it) but it probably wouldn't be enough to "steal" my work. Also, there's proof that I have the AMG expansion pack, still a great buy.
It was a real thrill (in some cases) seeing what all the NG music makers use to make their beats, some were colorful, others were scary, others were "I want that!", others were "I used that...once", and definitely there were some that were "ZOMGWTFBBQ".
I've come to appreciate GB for all that it can do and how fast it can do stuff. I'm aware that there are some limitations when compared to other [pro] DAWs, 'specially when it comes to mastering (Phyrnna, if you're reading this, you *know* exactly what I mean!)
This is about as "complicating" as it can look, sans an effect editor window. GarageBand 5, btw.

The JourneyMan Project [Turbo!] is arguably the first game I played that had a cyberpunk setting (played it w/o sound, mind you; my cousin's Packard Bell had audio quirks I guess):

So from what I gather, cyberpunk appears to equal electronic-heavy ambient/atmospheric music. Hope this helps!

One pro-tip (not indicated in the aforementioned tutorial) here to mention is that after you select the soundfont in the DLSMusicDevice's options, when saving as a new instrument, it is suggested that you FIRST go to the "browse" area of the instruments menu and select the instrument family you think the soundfont's instrument fits best in (for example: after installing and selecting a Peruvian Ocarina soundfont from the DLSMusicDevice menu, select "Woodwinds" (at least that's where I'd put it) from the "browse" menu and save your new instrument) so that way, you'll be able to find/recall [where] that particular new instrument quicker, after you save it!
Have fun!! <(^-^)>
Hey, did you know that there are "hidden" instruments built into GarageBand? If you explore around and
check out the "edit" area of an instrument you'll find the Sound Generator near the top. Here, you'll have access to multiple soundfonts that aren't instantly found in the [main] instruments menu. A good number of the soundfonts here exist outside the Sound Generator, but the exceptions are those that mainly belong to the "Analog", "Digital", and "Hybrid" families.
A lot of them sound perfect for old school tunes or space music, I'm personally in love with ones like "Galactic Static" and "Spacious" (both found in Hybrid Morph).
So, if you're not one who wants to go through an approximately 6 minute video to get that 8bit sound you've been looking for (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0U-IHrc FlU), you can just stroll through Analog Basic's family and tinker around with 8bit-like soundfonts such as the "Bright Square Bass"!

I'm impressed, FatKidWithAJetpak. It looked very thorough and useful to helping to get a Garageband user to go from amateur to mogul within one post. I too have experimented with the Magical 8-bit plugin, and am impressed with what it can pull off, in terms of its "native" sound.

Hello there, NewGrounds Audio Portal! Eventually someone was going to have to do this, and I'm proud to have begun it.
Basically, if you have any questions about GarageBand, I or someone else who has a broad knowledge of it will answer it to the best of our ability. I myself have only worked with Garageband 3 & 5 ('09); If you need help with the latest features of the new Garageband ('11) such as Flex Time or Groove Matching, I myself can only recommend you visit these links to aid you best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l_2MYSu-
ac, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnS1nlU64 Ho; other than that others may be able to help you better with those features than I certainly would.
Since I'm currently out of school for the holidays, I'll be able to be most attentive to any inquiries at this time. Don't be shy, all are welcome!
Also, if you actually just want to discuss other GarageBand related stuff, like comments on new or old features/versions, or how u (or heck, even me!)make your awesome tunes in said DAW, have at it! This is your source for all things GB!
Peace.

H.B.D., SL!
That's no moon, that's an epic NG artist!
Under 250$? Wow! should've set the limit even lower, as there are a lot of great headphones out there that are like way under that.
For me, I use iFrogz's Ear Pollution Toxix; this is my first and only "quality" set of headphones I have. s As the model name implies, it "pollutes" the ears with great sound, high and bass, to the point it's toxic! Imo, this is a good starter, though after a few hours it does sort of pinch a bit; but after you break it in, it's not really noticeable, at least to me.
I'm looking to probably upgrade to Mogul in the future.
If you're into gaming AND music, you owe it to yourself to get a set of the Razer Cacharias headphones! Judging by the reviews, this would be more suitable for you to use than even their most expensive Megalodon USB headset, which doesn't really produce surround sound for "basic" use, like listening to MUSIC.
Had to make another post, because even though I was JUST under the characters remaining limit, the server wouldn't let me post!
Part II:
So can we please get this strait? Can I upload songs made in Garageband or not?
(FTA) Yes, you can! Yes, you can! But at the same time, even if you're not skilled with a certain instrument or aren't all that good in the rhythm section, there are surely a number of tutorials online, on places like YouTube or whatever, where you can be taught how to make your own original loops, even if you have to punch it out on your Mac's keyboard.
NewGrounds audio rules when it comes to loops seems even to me a bit obscure. There are many different types of loops, be it vocal, drums, guitars, or actual clips of buy-to-own songs. If nothing else is taken from this, this realm is Creative Commons [2.5] territory, meaning "some rights reserved" not "all rights reserved". How I interpret the rule is that we are here to share works of ours, that are 100% authentic to ourselves, with those who may have an interest of either remixing that work (permitted by the CC license here), using the work in an animation (permitted by the CC license), and not earning commercial income from it (a Creative Commons NC must). Apple and their loops are beginning to look more and more like a "gray area" in this respect aren't they? (/FTA)
(also keep in mind that garageband loops are NOT copyrighted or whatever are are allowed to be used by anyone anywhere on anything. Some famous musicians even use garageband loops in their songs!)
(FTA) Even Apple's loop law mentioned in an earlier post appears to be obscure and or contradictory, because as all the works we artists make, no matter how long or short are copyrighted (but not necessarily (C) LICENSED) from the moment we hit save or whatever, seems to have "jumped the shark", because there is at least one song I know out there, that ISN'T having a problem using pre-recorded loops from Apple's beloved audio library; 100% GarageBand for sure, and with apparent drum loops, but his song is published and available for purchase, as he clearly describes, on iTunes.
I'm not a lawyer, moderator, or one that is a great big know-it-all; I'm just someone that's trying to help lead you in the direction of either changing how you present music to NG, or just taking your works to a number of other places, that would perhaps respect what you make, and/or be more construct
Let's chillax and work with the original post piece by piece (my replies are in bold):
At 7/21/10 11:43 PM, zzGrr wrote: Are songs made in garageband really not allowed on newgrounds? Nope, and they shouldn't be! I use GarageBand, and have uploaded works to NewGrounds, and so far the uploads are still intact. Can you imagine DAW profiling???
I have searched "garageband" in the audio portal and found LOTS of songs obviously made in garageband. But I have tried uploading some of my garageband songs on 2 different accounts but was banned because they were made in garageband.
I would hope they weren't banned because of that, because that would be "musist"! We shouldn't be judged by the software we use to make our audio with. The two sentences here kind of contradict each other, but still if your songs were banned, and there are still works in the Audio Portal that are without a doubt GB material, there simply MUST be another reason why your work was denied.
One was made entirely in garageband out of garageband loops and another I had recorded my guitar on with some garageband loops but still got banned!
Ah, the loops...this is perhaps why your beloved works got the hook. Whenever I hear the word, I tend to only really think of percussion loops, and not necessarily those made by instruments outside of percussion, and I don't know why.
I have a little story to tell about loops, and I'll try to keep it as concise as possible *stares at the characters remaining*:
When I first started using GarageBand, I wanted to make a "cover" of Garden from RuneScape, to see if I could make it sound "better" fully synthesized in contrast to the General MIDI version. If I recall correctly, this was the first time I had an interest in using pre-recorded loops, which at the time was a piano one, as I didn't have as much skill with piano as I do now. Sure it sounded pretty and kind of complemented the project, but there were some things I didn't really like about it. For one, I couldn't edit the loop, that is, change any notes or anything of that type, and secondly it really didn't sound all that good, the more and more I listened to it, not to say that the [pre-recorded] loops are poorly made, considering the fact the choppiness could've been because I had barely a gig of RAM at the time, but that's beside the point, really!
It's not finished to this day, but anyway, pre-recorded loops can be a double edged sword, but perhaps not so much if are a part of the demoscene (something I think NewGrounds is trying to enter into, but perhaps isn't grasping as a whole...).
In the demoscene, pre-recorded loops, imho, are next to commonplace. A couple of examples I'd like to throw in are those from demoscene members that go by the handles of "Archangel" and "Lord Performer" .
Archangel has pre-recorded rhythm loops in his works from time to time, one of my favs being "Another World" where the loops are DnB. I couldn't tell you if he had either found the loops via BBS sharing (before the so-called "Web 2.0") or if had put it together himself from another medium and then put it in his final work, but if you can understand the interface of module trackers, what sounded so natural and original to the awesome creation, is actually seen as a pre-recorded loop. In the demoscene's case, if it sounds good with the work (and not so obviously out of place), keep it in!
Lord Performer, tends to use pre-recorded vocal loops or clips from popular songs every once in a while. A good example is his "B.O. Traps" or "Deutschmark" modules, where he also tries to be creative and apply often humorous and rhythmic effects to the clips, to help make the works sound more original.
The late great Richard Joseph, while he may not be considered a true demoscener, is still considered a pioneer with the things he had done with audio, "no one else is doing". When it came to copyrighted (licensed) works that he wanted to incorporate in some of his video/computer game tunes, he actually went the extra mile and collaborated with real life original artists, such as Betty Boo and her "Doin' the Do" number for the *Magic Pockets* game (not to necessarily suggest that you should get in contact with Apple's big faceless audio team, to "work something out", because the pre-recorded loops are royalty-free).
Back to me and GarageBand, loops are okay, if they are successfully implemented, and are used seldom, and not to the point that it makes the listener (especially in the case of the Audio Mods that are GB users themselves) think that GB ppl are just a bunch of pre-recorded loop using lowlifes, that can't make their own beats. That's not wholly true. I tried really hard to avoid using the pre-recorded loops that Apple so graciously has stored in the DAW, until I decided I wanted to do a cover of SoundTeMP's "Yetit Petit" from Ragnarok Online. Now, I don't know if SoundTeMP had used a pre-recorded drum loop for this song, but I know someone had to do it, and it sounded like a lot of effort was put into making them. I looked for the closest ones to match it, and looking back, I think that SoundTeMP themselves would probably be laffing or irritated, because the loops don't really do the "cover" justice. My luck ran out with finding "coherent" loops, and I ended up going through trial and error to get the drum kits to match the rhythmic loops used at the end of the song; Despite all the painstakingly "slow"[-ed down tempo] work, I actually felt a little more accomplished of myself after completing it.
End of Part I
