Response to: R.i.p. Rare. Posted February 1st, 2011 in Video Games

I'm amazed no one made mention (let alone the fan art on the first page) of the BIG games that made Rare...well rare!

I mean, outside of Donkey Kong Country and Goldeneye 64, How could we forget about BATTLETOADS, or (well almost) Kameo, which was truly a "transitional" title, because according to Wiki, it was originally planned for the GameCube, but after the buyout, it instead showed up on Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the not too distant future.

It was these two games that put Rare on the map as a true debutante to either system. Rare was virtually always a step ahead of other game developers at least during their Nintendo years. We had Battletoads with graphics that looked like that looked like we were playing an SNES game. Or Donkey Kong Country that brought CG and real-time 3D/2D together in one fell swoop for arguably the first time (Shigeru Miyamoto himself was really against the idea, but marveled at the success it garnered from fans), or Goldeneye 64 with it's incredible graphics and of most note, pioneering the multiplayer genre for console FPS! The company name says it all, but looking back I think that even that was an understatement!

You think Nintendo ppl were upset about the move Rare made? How did anyone think the Apple/Mac ppl felt when Bungie was taken under Micro$oft's wing (Marathon, Myth, Oni, Halo?); after watching the co-founder Alex Seropian himself leave (even after Bungie decided to sever themselves later as an LLC), there ought to be an "R.I.P Bungie" thread as well!

We're going to be seeing a lot of "betrayals" for sure in the future, and they themselves may or may not be as painful as the ones Konami, Capcom, and Square-Enix (was then "Squaresoft") had pulled with Nintendo come the 32/64 bit era, or EA had done with SEGA during the 128 bit era, let alone WARP's sudden move away from Sony!

The legality of torrents depends on the content and genuine status of the torrents. Companies like Microsoft, OutSpark, and Frozen Sand, have been proponents of torrents for a number of reasons, mainly of which is to share files, which is what torrents are all about. You can read more about torrents here.

As I said, and for the record, there is NO support for that version of Logic. On Apple's website, you'll find no support downloads, no support manuals (that wouldn't look foreign to 5.5 for WINDOWS), and perhaps even more significant, no discussions about Logic 5.5. Sure it's copyrighted, but Apple only seems to want to reach back as far as 7 for Logic Pro.

The evidence is all there, but you don't have to take my word for it. Chat online with an Apple rep about Logic 5.5, I'd love to hear how the conversation went.

Yeah, but you'll be dating yourself back to 5.5 of 2002 for the answer to be true to that. Ask your BF about looking for torrents or something, 'cause eMagic (original developers), let alone Apple has no support for that relic.

Response to: Which Consoles did you have? Posted January 30th, 2011 in Video Games

I'm putting years instead of generations (got my reasons; listed in receiving order):

Turbo-Graphx 16-bit (1989; personal trivia: I even had a game for it, developed by the same company that made the TV I originally played it on (JVC))
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (1990)
Nintendo 64 (1996)
PlayStation (1995; was my brother's, first)
Sega Dreamcast (1999)
Nintendo GameCube (2001)
PlayStation 2 (2000)
Xbox 360 (2005)
========

Technically all consoles are truly computers...that are specifically designed to play games (perhaps why we didn't see Nintendo name its first system (in Japan) the FamiCon, or Sony's main game development division getting the name Sony Console Entertainment). I mean a console with internet service? A console that can run an operating system?

The really most expensive one I may get in the future (from the same place) is Skies of Arcadia (dang it's rare!).

*Metal Gear Awesome Snake Accent* Okay!

First off, I'm not a big Final Fantasy fan, but this thread isn't about me, it's about Square-Enix's direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, which as usual may have Wii users hopeful for support or just endure another "roadblock" that buys time for "their" Haeresis.

The Fabula Nova Crystallis ("New Tale of the Crystals) contines to get ever larger, and I wonder if it will or has already become more than S-E can bite 'n' chew.

Here in the states, we haven't heard much about Agito, let alone Versus, which I was hoping to hear about when I was spying an article on Yahoo! News last week (twas deceptive in its titling until I clicked the link to find out what S-E really was up to).

I'm curious to find out how it'll measure up to the last direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy X-2 (better or worse?).

I played a little bit of [my friend's] Final Fantasy XIII, and it did function just the same way it did in the vids: not really to my liking, but in some ways a step up from the PS2 predecessors'.

If XIII-2 can make the following improvements over its prequel, it'll be fine by my motherboard:

1. ACTUAL beautiful, bountiful blades of grass.
2. no "25-hour" intro gameplay (or so the reviews say)
3. better music compression/quality (just listen to the alpha tracks!)
4. Less reliance on references to previous Final Fantasy characters/enemies (Jihl Nabaat<-->Qustis?; c'mon Nomura-san!)
5. Better, Skies of Arcadia-style/grade, visual special effects (explosions, dramatic magic lighting/patterns, etc.).

The preceding most likely won't be in there considering how corporate and arrogant Square-Enix has become, towards its fans, and maybe even itself.

Your comments and suggestions, please! I'm getting off the soapbox now. *!* Omigod! Final Fantasyyyyyyyyyy!

Well, thank you for clearing that up. Apparently there are a number of users like yourself that had been on the Audio Portal here at NewGrounds longer than I, so its understandable that you know how the site admins here operate better than I.

I respect the work that Tom and his colleagues have done with this site; I'm not here on this forum to complain about how bad features are, I'm not here on this forum to vent my wrath about a change that was made or request it be a bannable offense to vote for a change, and I'm certainly not here to express how awesome I am that I'm oblivious to whatever the Fulp-ster does or doesn't do on the forums; I've already been like the aforementioned types on other forums of other websites ("Light", "Dark", "FAB"; can't say I've been much of that one other one I can't name right now). When it comes to it, one thing I didn't like was having to be labeled as a type on this site, but I thought "Neutral" worked for me best, as it had "worked" to be as such on at least one other site...

I'm here on these forums to be one of those people that asks "how does this idea strike you?" and be a good listener to all the comments and suggestions that all the posters provide. A forumer since 2004, I've learned that no two website forums are created equal.

In time, changes can and will happen, some I may like, some I may not (and those I don't like enough, I'll find the door myself, thank you).

I have seen change happen on forums as well as their respective websites/games, that me along with a number of other forumers had requested for YEARS, that eventually came into being! The way I see it, if Tom has more web collaborators, a considerable number of ideas/questions can be answered and taken into action, when he himself is unable to do such.

The [forum] poll systems feature I've seen on other web forums, might not be for everyone, but it sure to truly attract Tom and other admins' attention better.

A composer after my own heart, XD!

Like others have said, Finale (Finale Notepad to be specific) is a good start for just noting music; you can try it for free, and if you like it, the commercial version has more benefits to it.

Not to sound to "technical" but the output on software like this is General MIDI (or .MID for short) , where how the music sounds will depend on the sound card your computer has.

If you would like to take your work a little further and make "Redbook Audio" quality music, try a digital audio workstation (DAW). For entry-level musicians (me included), it will depend on your computers operating system; If you own a Macintosh (like me) I suggest purchasing a copy of iLife. iLife includes GarageBand, an easy-to-use DAW for anyone from beginners to semi-pro! You can drag-and-drop your .MID files that you created in Finale into GarageBand, and it'll transform your General MIDI instruments into better quality GarageBand digital instruments (note: you'll have to have a new GarageBand project open to do so first). There's a score mode within where you can make any additional edits to an instrument (just note that GB is peculiar to notation, where you'll have to record a section before adding any notes, if you're starting from scratch). You can print out indivudual scores of different instruments, if you like, but if you want to print out a "master score" (that is a score that displays multiple instruments per page) you'll have to upgrade, from what I've gathered, to Logic Studio. Logic Studio's really just an advanced, professional version of GarageBand (oddly enough developed by the same company (was eMagic, now Apple)); If you only made minor changes in your notation work in GB, just stick with Finale for master scores.

If you own a PC, purchase a copy of MixCraft; I don't know too much about it, as I haven't really used it, but it's surely the PCs answer to GarageBand. I don't really know of any MixCraft users around here, but there's sure to be some that may come across this thread to tell you how easy and useful it is.

Nice, I could really see some uses with that in the future!.

A number of Snow Leopard users, if not all, have had no success finding the appropriate path for the MandT77.aif file for the AMG Mandolin Tremolo instrument. I had addressed this on the KVR forums, and even PM'd a couple vids to a Samples4 member, to prove a point, about the difference in search efficiency between Tiger and Leopard/Snow Leopard users.

The [AMG] associate said that the path is system-specific, and I have found that to be a bit true. The end path to the Mandolin Tremolo folder differs slightly at the end, but only really at the end.

From Tiger's Spotlight I've found the path to the folder to be ~/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instruments Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/AMG Mandolin/Mandolin Tremolo

Now, the path is slightly different in Snow Leopard (can't really remember the difference that well), from what I recall, but you should still be able to find where you want to put the MandT77.aif file, from the given path information.

Here's a vid I made going from start to finish, in a proving way, of where to place the missing .aif file on your computer (note: it is unlisted (I have my reasons), so it can only be accessed wherever I place a link to it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyaNj-yXe hk

After checking the level list, checking it twice, it looks like it could almost go through the whole game in terms of the building "steps" of loops I put together (note: the "climax" loop loops twice), so if implemented the way I think, it could cover between 16-17 of your levels. Not sure about the ending loop, but maybe a level could be used with it.

It's not perfect, but it's all I got. :|

I don't know about monitors, but I've been eyeing the requirements for making sounds at Berklee Music (in regards to Game Audio), and they recommended the use of a ShureSM57 microphone; judging by the Recommended Uses, I think it'd be up your alley!

Spacebar-sensitiv e Playback? Posted January 23rd, 2011 in Audio

(adding to the laziness...) I Thought it'd be a nice idea for users to control playback's stopping and playing with their spacebar. YouTube, for example has this feature (that is, when you're not using it for adding comments), but unlike YouTube, NewGrounds actually has a LOOP feature (me and a number of 'Tubers have been pressing [in comments] this idea for ages).

So...

Perhaps NG can beat YT to this legendary double-feature? Also, I guess while I'm on the topic, maybe have the ability to shift to certain sections of the song with the number keys (YT does that too), and/or have a loop-mode shortcut like "L" or something as well.

Thoughts and suggestions, pleez.
