Response to: We need more games like Dark Cloud. Posted March 6th, 2011 in Video Games

I've only played and completed Dark Cloud 2 (aka "Dark Chronicle" outside North America). I did play a little bit of the first one, but I think I didn't feel as motivated. But I think I definitely see where you're going with this, in regards to the gameplay elements the series had. The Georama/Carpenterion feature definitely felt original and fun. I really liked seeing the past and future versions of locales that needed restoration. OP, I highly recommend you play the sequel whenever you have a chance.

A bit of a spoiler: Level-5 Games had a bit of a surprise/goodie in store for those who decide to complete the "after-game" chapter of Dark Cloud 2.

A great thread for a great series. I haven't tried any of the future Level-5 games yet like Rogue Galaxy, but I do admire their work, and especially the music from their main composer Tomohito Nishiura.

Welcome. You might be wondering why in the heck I'd be making a speculation thread that's three games ahead of its time, well here goes:

<|> One pattern seems to be taking root in Square-Enix's development of games these days; it seems that the "middle" game of each generation's series is online (i.e. Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV). This isn't to say that Square-Enix'll actually continue this pattern come next generation (if they're still in the software business that is). They may actually decide to either make all games online in the future or just revert entirely to offline games (which hopefully will still have strong and reliable PlayOnline support).

<|> We've watched the ever evolving Final Fantasy XI get better with age (or so I've read) and yet watch its younger brother (FFXIV) getting blast into oblivion before it's even made it to consoles (as of March 2011 there is no official release date set, due to extensive alpha/beta testing). If and when FFXVII becomes a reality (and is in fact online as predicted), what do you, the players believe should be expected from Square-Enix to making a new rock-solid MMORPG?

Disclaimer: I haven't played either Final Fantasy XI Online or Final Fantasy XIV Online, so the opinions/suggestions rest solely with the gamers that have actually played either game, and have a better idea what S-E can do to make sure that "XVII" comes off the blocks roaring, no-holds barred, and next-to minimal flak. Remember, this is a speculation thread: nothing is or has to be set in stone, all ideas/predictions are open, and please respect others thoughts on how the next FFOnline installment should be like, even if they go as far as to suggest that S-E abandons online FF gaming altogether, or something similar.

If there's anything I thought would be nifty is if Sqeenix did the Gravity thing, and develop an Ragnarok Online-style online game with tweaked Final Fantasy Tactics graphics. Sure some may see it as a step back, but as it has been said many times, graphics don't make the game (as long as they don't hinder the gameplay, lol). I'm aware Japan has tried very hard to avoid having any sort of gaming ideas that reflect Korean IP (or I dare say, vice versa), but perhaps maybe its time for a fresh perspective to try something of that nature out.

Have at it,ppl, the floor is yours.

Response to: NG Music being stolen Posted March 5th, 2011 in Audio

Well, I'm really sorry for the people here at the audio portal crying foul over their work being misused (by "misused" I mean anything from no credit to original artists (and lets face it, SoundCloud really seems to fail at actually having a place for the uploader to describe an overview of the work, outside of commenting on segments of the song.). Fame has its price, and sometimes it will be in a very bad way.

Now before any vict-- er musicians get all "Phantom of the Opera" here, I just wanted to make note of a few things:

<|> The NewGrounds Audio Portal is powered by the Creative Commons-NC-SA License, and this is one thing above all else should be made of mention to the artist (or charlatan, if you prefer) if you are one of the persons who got their music "thefted". Cetacea should make note of referring to the majority (if not, all) of the uploads as strictly cover music, not being able to make any [commercial] albums with them until she first and foremost attributes/contacts the original artist for permission which is technically built-in to any music related CC license. She's technically on a threshold of trouble, and would be disastrous if (1) the uploads get a copyright (C) license and (2) the "covers" get her royalties, without the original artists permission.

<|> One person going by the moniker of "2DPolygon" has made it a mission already to nag Cetacea into rethinking her actions, by essentially bombing what looks like the entire songlist with a stolen music notice. I, personally see this as a double edged sword; For one this one voice is making a fuss, and its likely to get her attention; for the other, this may cause some unwanted reactions to "2DPolygon" as well as Cetacea, for as far as I know, the integrity of her fanbase could be strong enough to deny such a claim, or even going as far as to refer to "2DPolygon" as a spammer (which is technically what the fellow from the Netherlands is doing, even if for a good cause). Please just send her private messages, and I'm sure that way that if she gets enough of those, she'll more likely make amends to see to it that there are adjustments made that will please both the original NG artists and her loyal listeners/followers.

As for me, I guess I'm happy that my works (that includes the covers as well) are so rank, that she or any other audio thieves in the world would most likely feel shamed to take them as it could risk destroying their image. Anyway, I pray that this all can be resolved in a civil manner, where no one has to be murdered or become a prison be-yotch for a considerable amount of time.

xKore (the OP), there's hope that this will be resolved, and I think that since your Magnum is currently sitting atop this week's top 30 (that's some serious personal acclaim if you ask me), I wouldn't suggest sawing off the chandelier chain just yet. You do have every right to be mad, but I'd just send a message of concern covering some of the things I mentioned earlier, and hopefully you'll hear a reply soon. Attorneys/authoritahs should not be dragged into this until such time as she decides to publicly announce an album that 100% violates the CC license.

Again I'm sorry to hear this is happening, but its something we music people will have to deal with until the end of time.

Crusader: No Remorse ('96, played it in '98)

That game practically had it all, from violence to money to relationships to stealth to adventure. The learning curve's not very steep, and best of all it was futuristic (a personal favorite theme of mine). Also it featured some of the most rare form of music even at that time for a video game, unless you were playing it on an Amiga (.MOD music), which I believe never actually got a port for it as Commodore was already facing bankruptcy.

Response to: Saddest character death? Posted March 1st, 2011 in Video Games

The last true metroid from Super Metroid.

Though I never played the previous two in the series, seeing the last true metroid go from baby to full grown to gone was something emotional to me back then. I really didn't think much about the last metroid passing on, when my brother played it back 'round '94, but about seven years later when I played it on an emulator and read the story more carefully, Niagra Falls. It's really too bad the incredibly magnificent & universal weapon it bequeaths to you before it's annihilated by Mother Brain, really should show up again in one or more of the other Metroid series of games, if it hasn't already. It was perfect for vengeance, and completing the game in one piece.

I mean if that stellar creature didn't take a bullet for you at one point, like a best friend or someone who loves you unconditionally, the game would be unfinishable, plot or no. For that I feel forever indebted to it.

Top Ten Things Video Games Have Taught Me:

1. If at first you don't succeed...reset, reset again.
2. Game characters tend to have a harder life than I do.
3. A good gamer never gets caught playing when they aren't supposed to.
4. It's not the graphics that make the game, unless the graphics are bad to the point, it interferes with the gameplay.
5. Saving the world, nine times out of ten often involves saving/getting the girl.
6. You're a brave soul if you can go through Super Metroid in the dark, with headphones on.
7. M-rated games don't kill people, mad people kill people.
8. Compact discs are still cheaper than N64 cartridges (before taxes anyways).
9. Make haste but take HEED (try to collect and unlock everything while completing the game in a certain amount of time)
10. The quality of game industry diminished after the Dreamcast era.

Ah yes, 1993, the start of the *golden age* "Clinton Years" (as YouTube's Navgtr likes to put it).

I never owned an NES, but my cousins did, and I don't recall ever seeing them with a copy of Pac-Man.

If I did have an NES, I would've wondered what the heck Pac-Man was because I never would have heard of it (Never saw it at our now non-existent Aladdin's Castle arcade at the mall, or recall seeing it at any laundromats until many years later). I'd probably play it a few times, but I think my older brother may find it more enjoyable as he was more into challenging games (I recall seeing him play Pac-Man for the first time in my memory of life sometime between 93' and 95' on my now deceased Amiga 500 (pro-tip: make sure you don't pick a flat where your bedroom window is straight across from a hill that a "parked" vehicle can roll down).

One benefit I guess from having it at home is that I wouldn't have to be dropping quarters/tokens into coin-op versions. I'd probably still feel more drawn to playing StarFox at Target (though I own an SNES I still don't own a copy of that game to this day; had a lot o' fun playing as a rental on one of my birthdays, and remember losing all my remaining lives the first few seconds I got to Venom). Also there's a good chance my parents, at least my mom would be re-hooked on playing the game (from what I gather, she used to be a pro at Pac-Man Fever), thus leading me to watch my brother or dad play Marathon or something or rather on the old G2 (not really what it was called, but was out just before the beige G3). I just realized, I did a lot of watching back then, at least at home.

Game With Fastest Save Time?! Posted February 25th, 2011 in Video Games

I'd just like to hear everyone's opinion on what they think which game loads the fastest; be it the computer game Diablo, which at least for my old beige G3 would save the game as fast as someone saying the word "Saving" out loud, then returning promptly back to gameplay (I'd actually like to set that speed as a benchmark, as its the fastest save time I can think of), to Sonic Adventure's perhaps then rare auto-save feature, which typically saved the game as fast as one could spell "NOW SAVING".

No game can't be nixed as long as it permits actual game saving, and I'll even let anyone go as far as to name one that doesn't even need a save screen. Go!

Response to: What is it that you hate about Sega Posted February 19th, 2011 in Video Games

The one thing I hate about SEGA is the fact that they are mostly now at the mercy of other third-party devs as well as the major console makers. Travis practically took the words out of my mouth about the poor business decisions, that changed (well at least SEGA of America) them from Genesis Gods/Goddesses into Dreamcast Derelicts.

Hearing these rips on Sonic Team, they probably might not exist, had department leader Yuji Naka had his way with all of SEGA taking the full risk of continuing in the hardware business. Chances are we wouldn't be seeing Sonic Heroes, or sub-par ports of their incredible gems on other consoles. Right now it seems that SEGA, along with other well known third-party game developers are getting boatloads of flak for somehow putting their big name franchises in "Harm's Way", one way or another.

Other than that, I like pretty much everything else about SEGA from their entrepreneurial minds (like the [accursed] fmr. SoA president Bernie Stolar put it in an interview), to their underdog third-party titles that oft generated cult followings (as Wikipedia likes to put it ([citation needed])), to the most memorable ad campaigns of all time (like something Kanye West would say), so I'ma let ya'll finish.

What the fuck does that mean? Ate up which corporations? You mean Eidos and Crystal?

Crystal? I mean Eidos and Taito Corporation (hence the term "catchy".) I mean Lara Croft and Space Invaders are now found inside the belly of the RPG beast, named Square-Enix.

Oh my god.

Ok, perhaps that was a lame idea, M-A, but don't come cryin' to me if the game is as bad as the critics claim, or worse. When I really think about it, a good number of companies other than S-E are also in deep poodoo with whole franchises getting killed. Anyways, it just didn't seem right that S-E appears that it couldn't even handle a Mario sports game. If the sales tank, after this thing's released, Nintendo may not even trust S-E to make even another Crystal Chronicles for them, and that's a huge deal right there, not to say they'd go that far.

Square-enix Tanks A Nintendo Game!! Posted February 9th, 2011 in Video Games

You can read the article here!

I like Nintendo and Square-Enix for a number of things they've done, together, but it seems that if it's not RPG related like Super Mario RPG or Final Fantasy, it's a production that joins the "The Spirits Within" hall of shame.

The game looks like fun, doesn't even look like it was developed outside of Nintendo HQ (aside from maybe the FMVs appearing to have a KH-like feel to them), but these reviews sound like a repeat of what went down with Final Fantasy XIV, which hasn't even gotten to consoles yet, afaik.

The economy must be REAL bad if a "kiddie" company is giving a controversial corporation that ate up two other mature, catchy, and well-known game makers, a greenlight to make a game for them, let alone a sports one!

Probably would've been a piece of cake if S-E had stuck with sports that their own characters had experienced, like snowboarding, motorcycling, and BLITZBALL (though Mario and crew may need aqua-lungs considering previous experiences with water like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, lol; didn't have that problem with Super Mario World, but I think 2D might've ticked off critics/fans even more, who knows?).

I know I can't speak for everyone, but I think everyone on the Nintendo and Square-Enix fronts will feel well compensated when they are [officially] allowed to play as Cloud (or other well known S-E chars) in the next Super Smash Bros. game!
