But I remember the book being like 15 pages long, with full color pictures... not sure how they turned it into a 2 hour movie.

The book's spanned a great enough length of time that I think it's about perfect. I mean, I can envision a full 10,15,20 minutes spent giving the audience a feel for the kid's family (ie: a dinner scene where he's then sent to change into his pajamas and go to bed) followed by 5 minutes of the transition from dream to his bed becoming a boat and his landing on the shore, then 5-10 minutes of introducing the monsters, 5-10 minutes before he's crowned king, 5-15 minute devoted to his wild rumpus, and then I'd give them the liberty of 20-40 extra minutes to devote to miscellaneous plot items and the return to normalcy. That puts the movie between 50-100 minutes.

Topic: Rape is worse than murder?

Posted: 10/13/09 07:40 PM

Forum: General

They are both equivalent acts of destructive abuse. One typically allows the preservation of life, but the ambivalence lies in the fact that the suffering lasts long after the conclusion of the violent perpetration. A rape victim's psyche is deeply wounded, the permanence of that scarring depends entirely on how thoroughly dominated the victim was during the rape. Some can recover. There is a feeling of empowerment one can attain from having survived rape and prospered after recovery. A rape victim may ultimately not only escape their victimization, but gain new power over their life.

But a murder has much more permanence. There is no recovery from murder, though there is often far more understanding for the mindset of a murderer. People can comprehend an unplanned violent murder as an act of rage. The victim's suffering isn't visible to the public following a murder.

As with most things, however, the devil is in the details. ANY rape is not equivalent to ANY murder, you've have to give a specific instance of rape to compare to a specific instance of murder. I mean, I think most people would agree that someone with a flesh hook suspension fetish, into whipping and beating victims during the rape has committed far greater an atrocity than someone who drove by and shot a rival gang member. But by the same token, I believe most people would agree that it's a far greater atrocity for someone to pull the entrails from a teenager and leave them to bleed out when compared to a case of statutory where the parents are pressing charges on a 23 year old who was lied to by a then-17 year old.

Sorry if I've offended anyone with my imagery.

- Breast cancer can affect men
- Testicles are purposely separated from the body, to keep cooler temperatures so that sperm aren't deformed (thus, there's less likelihood of spreading the cancer to other vital organs, whereas breasts are right next to many vital organs)
- Surgically removed breasts visibly alter a patient's physique, whereas missing balls are pretty much unnoticed.

There's also a reality factor. Women tend to want to support other women because they empathize more. Whereas, men who hear about other dudes with testicular cancer are probably 'lolshitsucksyo'. That, and I'd be willing to bet that the breast cancer walks and organizations and the like were established first. I have this impression that breast cancer is more common that I don't know is true or not.

Why have some very popular threads such as the Rage's Gift to You, Abusive Reviews! and Scariest Masturbation Moments threads get locked?

A: no longer serving it's intended purpose (ie: whistle-happy noobs flagging stuff that's not abusive, then crying about their garbage whistle) B: Any topic about masturbation is automatically too immature and idiotic to be tolerated. A man is facing charges for mooning a train in Germany. But, that's not all.

The guy was kicked off after mooning for riding without a ticket, and as the train left the station his trousers were caught in the closed door, dragging him for over 200 meters until a passenger pulled the emergency brake, ultimately delaying 23 trains while emergency crews responded.

Gold.

Because mother nature is who she is unapologetically.
She shares her secrets, rouses our spirits, washes our will;
poised to destroy us as if on a whim: our greatest ally.

People find comfort in nature. I, for one, enjoy it because it has all the qualities society lacks and NONE of the foibles with which its people are cursed.

Same reason you annoy people, actually. ; )

Anyway, stop annoying people. The way you get someone's attention is BEING YOURSELF. Calm down with the annoying crap. Really, you just need to stop doing stupid shit and hoping your dad will read your mind. Just tell him that you annoy him constantly because you feel as if he doesn't have time for you and are trying to provoke him into giving you the time of day. If he's any sort of decent man, he'll attempt to make some time for you, but you have to give him a break. He's working full-time to keep food on the table and a roof over your head. That, and he's his own person. He might need some time to himself every now and again, so you've got to respect that.

Don't be an idiot. You're all defensive because the children like to make fun of anybody willing to put themselves out there to criticism. By taking things so hard and insisting nobody understands the difficult lengths you've gone to attempting to mimic another vocalist (especially one as talented as Corey) you're proving you can't handle ANY criticism, regardless of whether or not it's useless to your improvement.

Anyway, not only do you not need to enjoy Slipknot to offer criticism, but the critics of your effort don't even need to be constructive for you to take something away. A sum of the useful advice I've seen here:
- Work on your breathing
- Get yourself a quality mic if you want decent vocals (from which you can extrapolate, your mic technique needs a little tweaking, you can pull the mic away from your face while you're hitting the loudest notes in order to avoid overloading the mic)
- If you want to karaoke something, get the karaoke track to do so. One trick is to rewire one of your speakers and reverse the polarity. Then put a mic in between the two speakers recording, and the vocals will be diminished greatly, or absent entirely. I get the feeling you've tried this or something similar, since you say the drums were removed. But, if you want to showcase your voice over the lead singer's, it's a no-brainer that you shouldn't care about preserving the drums if it means removing the vocals.

It seems he is being praised for his diplomatic efforts since coming to office. Here's a question: how do you see it? Do you have a problem with the fact that there's a monetary prize associated with winning (1.4 million dollars)? Do you think peace weakens America's stance in the global system? Do you think Obama is merely kow-towing to other officials?

I think awarding him the prize is a bit over the top, though I do like seeing his efforts recognized in a positive light, especially from the international community.

Topic: My Plants Are Dying, Any Help?

Posted: 10/09/09 04:14 AM

Forum: General

http://www.flytrapcare.com/

I think there are two problems: 1 you aren't getting the plant enough sunlight every day (you should be ensuring it gets 4+ hours of direct full sunlight a day, but really it should be in the sun for as long as possible, 12+ hours). 2: you aren't keeping it moist. The plant doesn't need fertilizer (in fact, that's why the moss is good because it has poor nutrients which the plant thrives in), but it does need to be either in a humid environment or constantly damp.

You should give it a Carolina-like winter dormancy period, probably upwards of a month or somesuch where it isn't quite getting a full day's sunlight every day.

Also: that's an awesome approach to getting rid of flies and shit in the house.

That observation, coupled with your action is TRULY ironic.

Anyway, the author has points... but he isn't so articulate in his explanation of the solution. One missing question is why compartmentalized public areas of specialized freedom are a better solution to universal public areas of non-specific freedom. What defines the size of these areas? What about carry-over? Say someone likes to burn forests. How big an area do you give them to burn forests? How do you prevent the spread of their personal destruction beyond it's confinement?

There are issues with the idea. Though, I do like the author's hinting toward virtual freedom through the use of computers. I think indulgences of that sort in a virtual world could become a therapy of sorts for the frustrated and restrained human soul.
