At 4/5/14 03:53 PM, sodium94 wrote: men of honour

In case you're confused, this refers to only to members of the mafia (made men).

The label sounds good but is mostly a trap (made men generally have to earn money for the mafia for life) and they can still be killed if the boss allows it for a "good reason" which is not the same as what most people would consider a good reason to kill someone.

They're just protecting their own and trapping people into the life like any other gang.

(though in practice they are merely forbidden from stealing from anyone connected to the Mafia)

See, it's all about making money.

Protection from competition

Everything described here is bad for the economy and earns the mafia money.

If a client rejects their overtures, mafiosi sometimes coerce them by vandalizing their property or other forms of harassment.

Wow what great people

Mafiosi generally do not involve themselves in the management of the businesses they protect or arbitrate. Lack of competence is a common reason, but mostly it is to divest themselves of any interests that may conflict with their roles as protectors and arbitrators. This makes them more trusted by their clients, who need not fear their businesses being taken over.

So? What would they gain from involving themselves?

Response to: Mafia's stimulate economy Posted April 5th, 2014 in Politics

Hell I'll go through reason by reason.

At 4/4/14 10:22 PM, sodium94 wrote: Reason 10: The Mafia has a sense of honor. If they say that they will do something, they stick to it. Most people in government don’t have a clue what a sense of honor is. If they say that they will do something, you can count on it only if you’re getting the short end of the stick.

Really questionable and naive if you know anything about the history of the mafia and organized crime.

Reason 9: The Mafia code of conduct is simple and clear, and unfettered by legal doublespeak and millions of regulations.

They're operating on a smaller scale and only have to worry about making money and evading legal trouble. Obviously this requires less rules than governing an entire country. There's absolutely no comparison; the mafia is not a system of governance.

Reason 8: When competing Mafia families go to war, they don’t kill hundreds of thousands of civilians as “collateral damage.” War is good for the government, but the Mafia understands that war is bad for business.

This is only because of the methods they use and the smaller scale of the violence, and because it's to their advantage to stay out of the public eye.

Reason 7: The Mafia won’t conduct a war against you at taxpayer expense just because you want to drink a beer or smoke.

Yes, the mafia is not a system of governance. I'm glad you finally realized this.

Reason 6: When you buy protection from the Mafia, you get protection. The Mafia has a good track record for limiting violent crime in the areas that they protect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racket_(crime)

Reason 5: The Mafia’s protection is much less expensive than the government’s. The Mafia wants ten or fifteen percent of your profits, while the various levels of government will try to snatch at least 40 to 50 percent of your profits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extortion

Reason 4: Unlike the government, the Mafia wants your business to succeed. They know that ruining your business means that you can’t pay for protection.

Again, naive and not necessarily factual.

The Mafia imposes almost no regulatory overhead, nor do they require that you waste your time filling out zillions of tax forms.

It shouldn't be a surprise that they don't want a paper trail.

Reason 3: The Mafia won’t keep you from protecting yourself or your property

Unless you decide to protect yourself against the mafia.

Reason 2: The government wants to regulate your family affairs. The Mafia has no interest in interfering with how you raise your children or run your household.

Yes, the mafia is not a system of governance.

And the number one reason why the Mafia is better than the government:
Members of the Mafia have a great sense of style, dress far better than government bureaucrats, and are much easier on the eyes.

lmao

Response to: Mafia's stimulate economy Posted April 5th, 2014 in Politics

Well first of all, limiting competition is very bad for the economy.

You're relying on a very whitewashed image of the mafia that comes from movies and TV shows. You should read some non-fiction accounts from people who have actually been a part of an organization. They usually paint a very different image.

In reality, the rules are only as strict as the boss wants to enforce them. The only real objective is to make money. You could admire how successful they were (or used to be) at being criminals I guess. Your last line was exactly what I expected, because besides that the only real reason to glorify the mafia is so you can say "hurr durr Italian criminals are cooler than black and Mexican criminals".
