Apparently I'm hallucinating, but it all seems so real. I see these things. I hear them. The problem is, nobody else can.

Now, the calls for arrest and death have subsided for the moment, but that doesn't make me any less fearful. I'm still crumbling right now.

Check yourself into an institution, dude. You need some serious fucking help if there ever was a case for someone needing help. And I don't mean that in a mean or insulting way, I mean it in as loving as a metalhead can be way. You're typing fine, but the FBI? I know it seems very real, but stop for a second and analyze your situation very clearly. You're crumbling very quickly, and you need to check into a mental hospital while you still have your own volition left. I've seen this happen to many tweekers that I knew, where they'd lose so much sleep their ability to process data goes down the fucking drain, and befor they know it they are so fucking nuts that their ability to tell left from right has completely fucking gone and they become rambling wackos. Don't let yourself get to that stage, and get the help you need and deserve.

This time around, there are a few different things:

The drums are programmed, thus a lot more technical.

The bass is a fuckton heavier and plays a significant part in the music

The songs are slightly shorter and catchier

The vocals will be done by 2 people, one doing a nazgul screech and the other doing a bowels of hell growl

The riffs are a bit death metally at times

There will be mandolins, acoustic guitars, and ukuleles in the music

and

The keyboard will be restrained a bit more.

Wikipedia. Music theory really isn't that hard. There are only 12 notes: A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, and Ab. And dinking around with Frooty Loops will teach you about rhythm.

Learn how to slap, fingerstyle, and pick; don't get good at one particular style at the expense of others. As well, make use of "grace" and "ghost" notes, and in a related note, do lots of hammer ons and pull offs. Gorgoroth and Dissection work as well, or really, any band where the bass functions as a foil to the guitars instead of simply hiding behind them.

what are the good amps and bass?

As far as amps go, I use the same amp for my guitars as my bass, and that's a Crate 150W powerblock with a homemade 15" woofer/4" tweeter speaker. As far as basses go, if you want a 6 string, a Carvin is the way to go, or a Rogue if you don't have the $$ for a Carvin. If you want a 5 string, get an Ibanez with a bridge humbucker and you definitely can't go wrong there. If 4 strings are your thing, get a fender P/J bass (P/J referring to the pickup configuration; a P pickup is that split pickup you see on Fender P-basses, among other, whereas J pickups are bass single coil pickups) and you definitely will love playing it.

Did some recording today, laid down some bass tracks and a couple keyboard tracks. Angband's demo is coming along quite nicely, and this time we programmed the drums instead of relying on either: a.) a flakey drummer or b.) my subpar drumming skills. The samples we used are real, though, and I like the sound of it. The bass sound is raw and raunchy yet heavy and clear, and this time around there is a definite death metal influence creeping in (though it's still black metal). For those who don't know, in this incarnation of Angband, I'm the 6 string bassist, and it definitely functions more as a rhythm guitar than a bass, freeing the guitars to do one-note-at-a-time melodic lead-like lines.

See, it's not the vocals I don't like, I think they're badass, it's the overuse of repetition. It's the same reason I hate almost everything Darkthrone has done and the same reason why I can't seem to stand Nargaroth anymore. People think black metal is an excuse to play the same riff for 3 or 4 minutes, but it's not. I just did the bass tracks on Angband's demo (it will be forthcoming once the guitarist gets out of rehab) and we change riffs every ten seconds or so. Structurally, it's more like power/speed or thrash metal, but riff-wise and stylistically it's pretty much black metal through and through. So it is possible to make good black metal without overdoing the repetition and having shit production. That's one of the worst misconceptions about black metal (that is, that it consists solely of repetition and lousy production) and it hurts black metal in every way possible. I follow the Mayhem/Dissection/Emperor model of black metal as blackened riffs over smooth and flowing yet ever changing drums.

Nice use of sarcasm. One reason I like metal is because metalheads usually have a sense of humour, however sardonic it is. Usually they don't take life seriously at all, and it's reflected in the music. One thing that separates numetal from regular metal is that numetal takes itself way too seriously (lyrical fodder is usually "I'm gonna fuck you up, payback's a bitch, [insert excessive swearing here], you don't know what you're getting in to, you're a fucking pussy bitch, etc...) and tries to pass itself off as badass and intimidating. However, the stereotypical metalhead can't be intimidated, so that's how you can tell an outsider. Metalheads don't try to intimidate other metalheads, they try to share comraderie and brotherhood. Real metal lyrics are about brotherhood, love for fellow metalheads and hatred for non-metalheads, not generic falsified anger and restrained rage.

There's one song off of WttB called Madness that sounds like, well, madness. Pure death metal madness. Pretty much. Using your talent =/= showing off. Now, showing off is what Yngwie Malmsteen does, where he plays a million notes per second with no regard to whether the song merits it or not. Now, to be clear, I do like his work, it's just that some of it comes off as rather trite because it's just him showing the world how fast he can play without any regard to melody. Sometimes it works, like when he did the Trilogy Suite, and sometimes it doesn't, like the entire Unleash the Fury album.

That being said, while Symphony X, Dark Moor, or Heavenly might be overly technical, it's usually with clear regard to melody and taste, and the technicality goes to further the music instead of ruining the music.

Funny, because the strength of Blood Inside was its claustrophobic, cluttered, feel. What an amazing journey.

And to Animetal: 2007 does not consist a long-timer. And you're digging yourself a nice hole there. Rule of holes: if you're in one, quit digging. I'm not trying to single you out, either; people seem to think the metal hell is the place to have flame wars. That's what General, or god forbid, /b/ is for.
