my thoughts are that if women can serve, if blacks can serve, if nazis can serve, then gays should be allowed to serve. The similarity. They are minorities in the U.S military. So if a woman can handle being in a squad with men, if a black can deal with being the only one that's white, if nazis can deal with being the only racists in a group, then gays should be able to deal with being the only gays in a squad. Not one of these traits makes a person less of an American citizen.

Response to: Inefficiencies in capitalism Posted June 5th, 2007 in Politics

At 6/5/07 07:35 PM, Elfer wrote: Ok, so this thread isn't an attack on capitalism in the macroeconomic sense, because it's the only workable self-regulating system we have for the moment.

The problem is, this isn't actually true. The goal of a private company is to maximise profits, not to be efficient and provide the best product. Basically, they want to bring in as much revenue as possible while spending as little as possible.

Actually, I believe in terms of business, that efficiency is spending as little as possible as fast as possible in order to produce as much. Your point is right but your not thinking about it in the right way. They are being efficient.

Therefore, they aren't driven to make the best product, they're driven to make the cheapest product that people will buy. This means that employees get fucked over with shitty wage and benefits, and customers get fucked over with a lower quality product.

The problem is, is that many people are willing to settle for less quality for a cheaper price. The reason companies like MacDonald's are successful are because they sell a meal that people are willing to buy without a grimace because of the economic benefit.

For example, in a private school, their goal is to entice parents to buy a spot for their child. Do private schools do this by offering the best education? No, they do it with flashy facilities and inflated grades. If private schools were really competing to provide better education, I doubt so many stupid kids would be coming out of private schools.

I'd like to see that stat, but besides that I don't really see your point. Privates schools have the same incentive to compete with other private schools. And private schools have a much more powerful weapon than their flashy facilities, they have reputations. Parents already know when they decide where to send their kid that the private school is known for setting kids up to go to Ivy League colleges, which is much more important to them. Despite what they might say, I believe parents would rather know their children will be able to lead economically sound lives rather then well-learned but never going anywhere lives. And that is where the capitalism fails, it fails within the higher levels of jobs, where the highest jobs are passed on to old friends and close relatives, rather than the hard-working employee.

Other problems:
- Redundancy. In many situations, ultimately there will be one product that wins out over the others, so all of the money/resources spent developing and promoting the competing product are wasted. For example, Blu-ray and HD DVD. Two companies developing similar products, one of which will be the new industry standard, the other which will become another Betamax. Each one has had millions upon millions of dollars spent on development, production and promotion, and ultimately half of that money will have been completely wasted.

But isn't redundancy a main trait of capitalism. That money doesn't just disapear. Another failure/success depending on how you see it, the money goes to the outsourced countriesliek china. Overall yes it means bad capitalism for us, but good for them. And look how much they're paid.

- Marketing. Billions spent on promotion of products every year, with nothing to actually show for it. Promotions serve no purpose other than to create desire for a product, which is only necessary in a capitalist system. The waste of resources is staggering once you consider billboards, flyers, flashy packaging, etcetera.

that's the case if you're planning on privatizing all utilities, industries, and completely restructuring the country. But consider how more and more marketing is being done over the internet, flyers and flashy packaging can now be sent through email for almost nothing. Also Billboards, or at least many of them are taken up by state programs like state lotteries

In reality, the most efficient system for getting a given task accomplished is a non-profit co-op. The people are involved because they care about what's happening, and they don't need to cut costs to turn more profit, so this actually does create drive for a better product. It's also more efficient because they spend a lot less on administrative costs and a lot more on actually getting as much accomplished as possible.

Of course what happens when a non-profit gets too big to give the individual care they used to. For an environmentalist group, it's the difference between saving the environment with enormous care one prairie at a time and then having to settle for not doing that as much when you have a larger area to cover just because time is always an issue.

this post was overall alright.

Really the only real thing you can trust are the raw facts on any news station really. I don't pay much attention to percentages or the other facts and figures that I get on T.V because most of the time its just too unpredictable to believe. If 14 Americans died in Iraq today, I couldn't accept that fact as relevant until I learned that all 14 were in fact U.S soldiers, since that the only number that I can relate it with.
I know that the probability of a non-soldier American besides journalists being in Iraq is incredibly low but that still an example.

Another example is someone giving me a percentage like, (such and such treatment) may decrease the chances of contracting AIDS up to 80%. That number means nothing to me since its "up to." I need a study, and a study that won't beat around the bush for the exact answers. I would much rather hear a 62% treated rate for women in a study and 59% treated rate for men than saying "up to" 62%. And that's what I feel we're fed through the media everyday. We want to go too fast.

And I think part of the problem is the competition between news stations. They want to seem on top of it. They don't want it to seem like something bad isn't happening because frankly, pleasure usually only affects the few, while sadness has much wider menu. I believe if these stations slowed down and just tried to ignore their ratings in favor of waiting for concrete information, we would be worryng a lot les about media bias than we are now.

Closed Eyes Effect Posted June 5th, 2007 in Game Development

Hey I wondering if you guys could rate this closed eyes effect I did in flash. Basically what is it is what you see... when you have your eyes closed. It's a very subtle effect I'm doing for an upcoming flash. I realized that I've never seen anyone portray the flickers of light that your brain tricks your eyes into thinking you see. If you don't understand what I mean. Close your eyes very tightly and look straight ahead.

I think this a pretty good simulation of what I see. But does anyone else some suggestions?

When viewing this please sit back since if you get to close to the screen, it look really a little weird.

Lookie here at what I've found...

On Pg. 22 of the GAO report a chart says that the homicide numbers committed were about 1% of the crimes, about 5,992 murderers/killers/accidental killers etc. So, interesting, no? In the US, there were 16,137 VIOLENT intentional murders since 2006 (it was updated in 2006) according to http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_04/offenses_repor ted/violent_crime/murder.html. How many more were non-intentional? From that, we can eventually figure out what percent of murders were committed by illegals...

But then one of the main arguments is that said crimes would NEVER have happened had they not been in the United States. But say for instance that a murder involved an illegal mexican killing another illegal mexican. They couldn't possibly say that such a murder would not have happened at all. A stat that i would like to see is the percentage of murder victims that were illegal immigrants.

Things I don't understand

Several of the figures suggest that the heading of the whole article is incorrect, why do they only put trust in the study that say that over 4,000 have been murdered and not the one that says 700.

Also, it seems to be suggesting that illegal immigrants only kill American citizens, so is there some sort of conspiracy, all the illegals are in on it? I'm sure there are more han a a few illegal to illegal killings.

This is just as pathetic as a racist saying we shouldn't allow blacks in the country for the same reason.

To those who would object that a holiday to celebrate this historical event is to extreme. What else would you have of us? We here in America have dedicated an entire month to the oppression of the African slaves. 300 years in thirty days, each African American standing proud by the hardships they faced, standing proud in the name of all slaves. We already allow evangelical Christians preach death to homosexuals on live T.V weekly, and we already discriminate against Latin Americans because they come here looking for jobs, even though it is our European ancestors that killed most of them off with smallpox. All of these misdeeds and misrepresentations of minorities and yet the Nazi party can’t be allowed a single day? Speaking especially since what we aim to celebrate is a belief that many share to be true as the beginnings of a just solution in Germany. We do not celebrate in order to hate, but to express our love that the Nazi party can still be represented within a democratic society. It is just as we express our love at the notion of Christopher Columbus setting foot on American soil for the first time, smelling the pollinated and sweet-smelling air for the first time, before sneezing directly on the nearest Amerindian. That sneeze would eventually lead to American colonization and finally, to the present day. God bless Christopher.
To those who believe that we should not commemorate either day, I say, “Oh Bah! Oh Hieronymus! What hypocrisy!” Besides, it is not in the American spirit to celebrate the passive, but the active! The discovery of the New World was one of the most active events in history and so it is in the American spirit to celebrate both for their noble causes.
I would like to end by stating that all minorities, no matter how controversial, should be represented. With Hitler Day, this representation that has been lacking for so many years occurs. To the Jews I quote Saint Francis of Assisi, “Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith.” With Hitler Day I expect that the world will finally be able to pressure the Jewish population into exploring what it truly means to be a part of this grand nation.

And isn’t it about time? Finally, through the same type of government that allowed the National Socialist German Workers Party in the 1920’s to become a major global influence, finally they are given a resounding encore. This holiday commemorates and celebrates a new beginning. Hitler Day is not just an American or German holiday, for the man himself has, if some way, shape, or form, touched all of our hearts, but it is a universal holiday. This is to be celebrated on the closet Monday of February 24th, the day that Adolf Hitler first presented his ambitious project to Munich in 1920. Appropriately for this is the party that represents the working class, the working class gets a day of relief from their jobs in order to celebrate what they haven’t been able to celebrate for some 60 years now. This holiday will also be a warning to the anti-nazi extremists that America’s devices were not created to serve their own biased needs, but the needs of all. With Hitler Day, people that have been forced to apologize for their beliefs can now openly express themselves, just as it is now acceptable for a homosexual or a negro to reveal him or herself. It is also a time for those that have oppressed the Nazi population over recent years, inexplicably the Jewish population, who has turned the American mindset against the very concepts that it strives to magnify in the name of liberty and the first amendment. I believe that while Hitler Day should be a day of celebration for all, it should also be a day of atonement for the Jewish population, similar to Yom Kippur. Though the Nazi Party has been disrespected for far too many years, it is not too late for the followers of Judaism to give an apology that is acceptable. Judaism should look on Hitler Day not as an insult, but as an opportunity to find themselves in the good grace of the Almighty.

Four score and seven years ago, our fathers, as well as the rest of the world, were able to be presented by a truly historical notion. An event that would change society as we know it, forever. A noble plan was presented, and this plan, like the little democratic fireball it was, rose from the depths of the minorities and became one of the greatest sensations the world had ever witnessed. One could argue that the ‘discovery’ of this plan ranks in importance with the discovery of the New World because we owe so much to how far we’ve come since its introduction. It is in the American and democratic mindset to commemorate and celebrate such accomplishments. Take Black History Month or, as previously mentioned, Columbus Day. Neither one directly related to democracy, yet we celebrate because it holds so much relevance to our early history. Here, I propose to create a holiday that is both in the name of the American spirit, and in the name of democracy. In order so that a minority, which has for long suffered by the cruel hand of fate, can be recognized for what it is, just another organism in our ecosystem of democracy. And yet, it is not so, because when you think of it, you know it holds relevance with so many Americans that you understand that it doesn’t matter that the origins are from abroad. This is why we need a holiday. So I believe a good name… Well since we use Christopher Columbus’ last name for his holiday, I can no better alternative than to call this momentous occasion Hitler Day.

Proposal to Represent Minorities Posted May 23rd, 2007 in Politics

The Creation of a Holiday so that a Minority Belief is not Excluded and Everyone Can Have a Day to Celebrate their Individuality

As our world has evolved, so have its people. Through the actions of using new-found communication technologies, we have created a new era of cultural diffusion and globalization. America has never been a uniform country, whether talking about its geographical terrain, which ranges from the Rocky Mountains to large deserts to sandy beach shores, or about its culture. Ever since the beginnings of its colonization, America has experienced the clashing of these cultures turning itself into a box of mixed ethnicities. It is perhaps this mixing of communities that has made this country so powerful in the minds of foreign countries.
However, the greatness of America’s democratic government, and the people that live here, is nowhere near the importance of its flaws. The United States is in the midst of a cultural disaster. This is because of the fact that certain minorities, commodities that the democratic system holds dear, are failing to be represented in politics and policy, and are just basically ignored in American life. Because America is supposed to be the land of opportunity for all, it is also important for the country to realize that some groups have nothing to be happy for. While Americans as a whole can be grateful for the discovery of America through the off-day of Columbus Day, other groups, especially those of non-American origins, have been belittled. It is time for the groups that rule the United States that their gloating through various holidays goes against what the laws of their country forbid.

Response to: Solve Politics with 2 Column Proofs Posted May 23rd, 2007 in Politics

Yeah Okay guys I will give an example that is not proved but can be a possibility for When does Death Occur?

Definitions
Life: a condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms.
Death: Without "Life"
Birth: the process in animals by which an offspring is expelled from the body of its mother.
Embyro: Eukaryote at its earliest stage of developement.
Cell: The Smallest scale of "Life"
Fertilization: is fusion of gametes to form a new organism of the same species.
Egg: A Cell that is designed for reproduction and development (alive)

Opening Statement: Cell = Life
Reason: Given
Statement: Multiple Cells = Embryo
Reason: Given
Statement: Embryo = Life
Reason: Substitution (1,2)

Now from this someone might argue that Multiple cells mean multiple lives, which is true in part, but in this case we are talking about eukaryotes, which are mostly multi-cellular organisms.

Statement: Egg = Alive
Reason: given
Statement: Unfertilized Egg + Fertilization = Embryo

Now here is where its tricky. We need not stay in the formal two column proof format for this part. We can easily tell that Fertilizer = Life, Unfertilzed Egg = Life, and Embryo = Life, however despite this occuring, it is only Fertilizaer + Egg that Equals this specific type of life. Much like the Side Angle Side Theorem in Geometry, you need all parts of it to say for certainty that one thing is what it is.
