I've been wondering this for a while. I've noticed that when I use a v-cam my flash can get laggy, but also it looks mechanical sometimes. If I was to point out one flaw in my animating it would be a lack of style, flow, or really it's that "seamless timing" that so many on this site seems to possess. THe v-cam when it does this sort of thing, really makes that flaw obvious. I was wondering if anyone else either had that problem with the v-cam and how they fixed.

More importantly, though I am a seasoned flash artist, I rarely talk to any others about technique. I was wondering if the more experience use v-cam extensively, is there an easier or more efficient way? Thx.

AS2 to fix sound issue? Posted May 13th, 2009 in Game Development

So I have this problem where when Ia person is navigating through my flash, he starts at a main menu which pops up as a the song to the intro ends. So when he clicks on a button he's taken to another screen. this screen has a "back" button. But when he presses it, he returns to the main menu and the song from the intro starts to play. This should not happen. I've tried to find a timelines solution to this but it's a no go. How can I set all the back buttons to stop the sound once it has entered the main menu frame?

I'd rather deal with a few fruit loops than get mugged and/or shot.
anyone who says that you can only get mugged and shot on the ghetto side.
hasn't been to Chicago in a while.

yeah now you can get mugged and shot while your at school! yeah Chicago is probably a little safer than it was. It's not like you'll get shot here if you're white and on the south side, you just can't look at people funny. Take it from me, lived here the past 18 years.

Seriously though, Chicago is a huge city, you don't have to go to the south or west side. Just stay in lincoln park and downtown and chicago is the best meetup city i can think of.

I would come I've been waiting fo rthe chicago meetup since 2004

Fema has done quite a bit in the past. Also don't go to wikipedia for this one. It's a completely biased look into the agency. Fema actually did quite well in response to Hurricane Andrew as well as September 11th.

The misconception about fema is that a lot of people think that fema is supposed to solve everything, when really there power is limited to the initial response and the bringing in of aid workers unless congress authorizes more power.

Response to: Marginalization of the youth Posted May 10th, 2009 in Politics

Has anyone noticed how no aspect of society that relates to youth is ever operated by youth? For instance, youth-targeted programing on television is written by old guys who interview kids to find out how to make the best buck off their cliched tales and spin them into shallow high school flicks.
THIS is what youth-targeted programming really is and what its supposed to be.

How about some of these other parts of a child's daily life. Who is to blame for the failing of this country's school? Well, all the adults of course are saying that it's our kids who are dropping out, it's the kids who are joining gangs. What the adults in power are blind to is the fact that no matter what age you are, you are not immune to the problems that are prevalent within the society as a whole. For instance, how can a kid in school learn when he or she is being abused at home or lives in a neighborhood where they can't get a job or risk being shot. That's not the way to be educated. At least in an Asian police state like, children in the city are protected from that sort of "distraction."

I don't see how services could replace goods, unless you start using people for chairs and footstools or hire comedians instead of buying TVs. If you simply want people to consume less, then you're talking about a revolutionary change in human priorities that have operated since the beginning of civilization (his fur more comfortable than mine, his big shovel mean less farm work, augg).

You don't have to get rid of goods in order to have services be the driving force of the economy. Also, you're not thinking about service in the same sense that I am. I'm not talking about the government providing a means for people to live off its dollar, I'm talking about people helping themselves in a way that helps the country as a whole.

I Think We Should Fight Consumerism Posted April 28th, 2009 in Politics

I hope you find the heading of this topic as hilarious as I do.

I feel like this topic is touched very lightly every holiday season or so and it's always met with "yeah consumerism is bad, but hey it's life." And that seems to be where the conversation ends every time. We've (the US) been a consumer nation since WWII and because we are so used to being consumers, we have concluded that this is what life is about. You work to make money, money that you will pour back into the economy to keep the machine going. In return you get STUFF. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with stuff, but there is something wrong with the way we view stuff. Stuff, to the average American, is the driving force behind Capitalism. In truth, it is not, but only seems to be because it is what Americans target in their consuming. Accessories.

The economic cycle of America is well known. Every ten years or so, after economic bubbles, we hit some sort of downturn. The current recession is obviously worse than others. Many people are to blame. There are a lot of corrupt and high-ranking members of society that have been exposed because of the recession. But in reality folks, we are just as much to blame as the banks or wall street of Washington D.C. What people don't seem to ever get is that the reason a cycle exists is because we have continued to use the same methods of trying to revitalize the american population. By pouring money into the economy in favor of consumer goods than other things like services. This is the same way the Great depression started, amidst the bubble of the 20's, when consuming started to kick off. The only reason it only took a decade for the Great Depression to commence and it took 50 years for us to get into our own depression is that we actually made efforts when there were warning signs.

But being reactionary towards the economy is like trying to stamp out a fire with an oily rag.

I understand that the fall of consumerism means a lot of bad changes to good things (manufacturing jobs for instance) but in return we allow small businesses to flourish, we wrest control of our society away from the 20,000 commercials we see every year on tv (seriously, I want to freakin' watch my NBA playoff without breaking for a commercial every twenty seconds), and most importantly we learn how ot build a better economy, one that actually run on sustainable ideas, and services that are guaranteed to rise above economic turmoil.

I'm hoping you all realize that this is how Newgrounds operates. Newgrounds might take in its money from ad revenue, but its selling product is created in much the same way as a social service is delivered. By those who consume it. We benefit from ourselves. I don't like saying bad stuff about the sponsors of Newgrounds since its their money that makes it possible, but think how much better an economic structure Newgrounds has than the companies that advertise on it. These websites pay in order to get consumers to pay while Newgrounds facilitates producers. Which structure is more likely to succeed? The one that needs to cut jobs and make their consumers pay or the one that is so secure financially because people hire themselves?

Oh newgrounds, you two-faced godsite. You succeed as others come to you, thinking that spending money on ads will take traffic away from you and bring it to them.... Wow, not only is that capitalism, it's a monopoly.

Response to: Why are consoles so weak nowadays? Posted April 19th, 2009 in Video Games

It has to do with the fact that the current generation consoles out-power their predecessors by leaps and bounds. What did you have when you had a PS1 or a N64 or a gameboy? They never really died because they were never asked to do very much. I mean gameboy never had a game that challenged its graphics abilities. N64 had cartridges so no spinning disc readers ready to burn out the console. ever noticed how your SNES never made a peep?

Nowadays you have internal harddrives that run up to 180gb and double-layered blu-ray discs that have to be read to play a game. That's a pretty heavy request. Consoles can handle it because they have the power capabilities to make their disc read at a billion revolutions per second, but the price for making one mistake is so much higher and it needs higher attention to guard against mechanical failures. Now consoles have huge fans in them because they generate so much heat. Also their being asked to do more than play games now. THey're basically becoming mini-computers. In a way, new consoles are really really smart buys since they basically can act as a personal computer at a really cheap price.

Hey I thought the live-action film of avatar was gonna be a complete bust but now several important changes have been made.

Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire has replaced Jesse McCartney as Zuko
Aasif Mandvi of The Daily Show is playing Commander Zhao
James Howard Newton is doing the music (though I would have preferred the track team to do the movie).;
The budget for the trilogy (that's right trilogy) is going to be $250 million

so overall I think this bodes far better than it did for dragonball evolution.

You're definitely right about the polish thing, but that's more a result of internet penetration in game consoles nowadays. companies release not so polished games because they'll have time to clean it up with software updates. On the other note, however, I have to disagree with you. One thing you have to notice is that in the past two years, movie-based games have stopped ruling the gaming world like they used. THough they'll never totally be gone, now you have companies who actually feel like they'll get big press and profit if they turn out a quality game. Just some examples are Killzone, Littlebigplanet, and Flower (talk about art) for ps3. And we know that while Tom loves to just give his best to his NG fans, their is no way he didn't want to make some money off of castle crashers for XBoxLive.

Start a Fuckin' Revolution Already! Posted April 7th, 2009 in General

A just saw a topic about Disney posted by Funkbrs and it really got my blood boiling... why? Cuz the fact is that Disney isn't the only company who is completely screwing the world of media entertainment nowadays. It's every multi-billion dollar American corporation in charge of keeping us distracted from reality. Unfortunately, the fact is that every 30 years or so, these corporations forget that the original think tanks of entertainment were actual people, not pop scientists draining all the milk from a formulaic plot or sound. Now EVERYTHING is crap. Mainstream music is crap, mainstream movies are crap (If I see another David Zucker Parody Movie, I will shoot someone, hopefully him), and mainstream television.

It's a sad state of affairs when video gaming is the only branch of entertainment that is successfully holding up its name as both a form of entertainment and as art in the mainstream. But seriously, I can only think of two artfully done animated shows of the past 5 years (made in the U.S) Foster's home and Avatar, but those were the only risk-takers in an entire five year span.

Now the main providers of animation, Nickelodeon, Disney, and Cartoon Network, are really struggling. Nick has completely dried the well of Spongebob's undersea home. Funny, 10 years ago after the Kid's Choice Awards, spongebob was first aired, thus beginning the last creative spark on Nick until avatar. This year the debut show slot after the awards was Penguins of Madagascar. I think you can see the situation we are in now. It's pretty dire.

I don't know how were gonna save music. It looks like it's going to be in the shitter for awhile as long as people keep buying those freakin' remixes. But I know how to save television. At least the animation side of it. And thankfully it involves Newgrounds.

Now I've had this intention for awhile now, but it has always only been a solo ambition. BUt now it's war. A war against formulas or whatever it is the corps are tyring to shove down our throats.

We need to take animation back. And by that, I mean we need to take back animation in the name of art and creativity. I shouldn't need to say it, but I think flash is the best tool for the common street animator to start a freakin' revolution.

Newgrounds is a prime example of what it means to be a powerful figure but not a corporation at the same time. They rely on the actual entertainment of its audience in order to keep itself going. As a result Newgrounds has an incredibly secure business model in letting its audience be the suppliers and consumers of the entertainment it offers. But it won't take a buy-out of Adult Swim by Newgrounds to bring Flash to the centerstage of mainstream media. It's already happening and it's happening because of independent artists and studios.

I think Waltz With Bashir would be a good flagshi;p flash to sail under for the time being.

See you in 5-7 years when flash (and by extension I) will rule the world.

Virtually everyone fears dying to some extent. But just remember, unless you have an immediate reason to fear dying, you should not let that fear get in the way of how you live your life ie you should be paranoid. By the way you describe your situation, you're not. good work.

If you are a casual gamer who likes to try new things and has friends who are also casual gamers, I'd go with a wii. For more hard-core stuff, better graphics, choose an xbox360. xbox360 has a far better online than a wii, but then again a wii is made so people can be competitive with their friends more.

I'm fairly impartial on this topic since I have a ps3 and you didn't list that as an option. I just wanted to let you know that you should definitely look at the releases that are coming out for all consoles, especailly for ps3 and xbox360 since the war that is going on between is really sparking massive plays by both sides in terms of exclusive title. Either one you pick, you're gonna get some great exclusive games but you're also going to regret not being able to get the games on the other console.

Response to: Best size for a flash movie? Posted April 4th, 2009 in Game Development

At 4/4/09 03:13 PM, ScorchedMoose wrote: What is the absoulute best size?

Think about what you want to do with the flash. If you have a bigger stage, that usually means you intend to use the extra space on that stage because a smaller couldn't effectively fit it all in. However, with a bigger stage on a computer, you are far more likely to run into framerate issues.

you should also think about height width ratio. Overall, this is probably more important than than how big the stage is. The default size of flash is 550 width * 400 height, a ratio of 11:8. Unless you're making a game, you always have the size wider than it is tall.

But again back to the question of what you want to do with your flash. For example, I want to begin making flashes so I can later transfer it to DVD without too much quality loss. So I did sokme research into television formats and settled on 720 * 480 pixels is the size I want to use from now on. This calls on me to do several things from now when I release my flash to the web that I didn't do it before. I now animate at framerates 24 and 30, so I have to be really careful about over loading CPU since my flash stage is so big now.

Basically you have to predict what you want to do with the flash in the future and design your entire composition off of it.

That's because anyone who does that thinks that they have this constantly maturing mind and thought process. They believe that whatever idea they come up with next is the better one and they're frankly egomaniacs and huge dicks. They see what they don't like about an idea (say a religion) and ignore everything else about it. There is no perfect religion, and that includes atheism and agnosticism, that everyone can agree with.
