yeah but without those four lines it would have just been two people walking around in the snow, murdering trees, and zipping up coats.

wow has it been a year already? I'm actually cleaning out my apartment for the LA move right now, and I just uncovered my original, hand-drawn, god-awful-ugly storyboards from pine not five minutes ago. that short was kind of the point where I was like, "yeah, animation, this is for me."
so thanks for the fantastic year, Newgrounds. and thanks to @Piper and @SirUndead for being so awesome. my apologies for getting all sentimental.

why on earth would someone want something of low quality on a resume?

not necessarily related to voice acting, but the ntg also makes for a great on-set boom mic to have on a budget. i end up using mine on pretty much every shoot that i'm running sound on. a good chunk of my sound effect and foley recording is done with it as well. if you're looking for something a bit more versatile than a usb mic, it's a solid choice.
Oh wow! So glad to have an opportunity like this. I've been frantically animating this intro (hopefully I didn't miss the window, I took a lot of extra time to make it look nice and smooth and junk). Seems like it would be perfect for your channel!
Now, I didn't really know what your channel was about, so I just kinda guessed based off of things a lot of people make channels for these days. I feel like there's a really great mix of ideas in this, and it came out as something that could really drive in the views! There's no sound yet, but I assume you'll hire an audio engineer to do that kinda thing.
Well I've prattled on enough, here's the intro!

So glad to be able to help out!
photoshop is just about all I use for frame-by-frame these days, all of my shorts and animated gifs from this year on here were made in it.
i started a little writeup that covers a chunk of the basics over here, so far it's mostly the same stuff that's gone over in the Alex Grigg video with a few variations of my own. i still need to get around to posting part III at some point.
it can be a pain to get set up, but, once you're going in it, it's just about as competitive and easy to use as most other software out there.
At 10/20/14 05:55 AM, PeterSatera wrote: So let's have a look at what you suggested for budget wise.
yep. what I'm seeing is a wide range of prices spanning 0 to 3,500 and a wide range of products spanning many types of animation. fantastic, that's dead on what I was going for when I wrote the list. so yeah, I'm done. here's my list again.
raster frame by frame: TVPaint or Photoshop
vector frame by frame: Toonboom or Flash
rigged/puppet animation: After Effects, Toonboom, or Flash
effects and compositing: After Effects
3D: Maya or Blender
At 10/19/14 07:20 PM, PeterSatera wrote: Have you actually looked at what puppet animation is? Here's a hint it's not what you are implying it is.
http://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/animating-puppet-tools.html
type in "puppet animation" into google. it's first typing suggestion is "puppet animation after effects." I'm sorry if you want to pretend like puppet animation solely refers to people physically puppeteering a puppet, but it doesn't. it's a form of animation comparable to fully rigged characters. we can keep going down the semantics route even though you know full well what I'm talking about if you'd like, though. please.
"Toon Boom". Which is still like me saying "Adobe". yada yada
no it's not. TVpaint has separate packages as well, but you didn't seem to get up in arms about that. I'm assuming this guy is smart enough to click on the animation section of toonboom.com and compare the products for himself.
Then you tell him 3D - Maya which has one of the most steepest learning curves for a 3D package.
it's free for students which makes it worth checking out if he's into the idea of 3d animation. I don't see how recommending he look into an industry standard that he can access for free is somehow a negative in your eyes.
Then TV paint and Photoshop for animation...like they are a better alternative...They're not. They're worse.
For frame by frame raster work, they're fantastic. I'm sorry if you have a different opinion of them, but I haven't tried harmony's raster brushes, so I'm not going to recommend it.
But hey, let's boil all this down to its core. no more semantics, no more complaining about learning curves. I've given this kid 7 animation programs to look into. And what have you offered up? Toon Boom Harmony. a program that you have to "contact sales" to even find out how much it costs. The only price I could find anywhere was 3,500 dollars. Yeah, fantastic suggestion for a 16 year old who's only just thinking about getting into animation.
great job satera. excellent contribution.
At 10/19/14 05:35 PM, PeterSatera wrote: lol. Then you have no idea what "Puppet Animation"really is, so your suggesting programs for a form of animation you're completely clueless of. Puppet animation, IS a form of stop motion animation. Sometimes by a puppeteer sometimes made FBF.
puppet animation, not puppet animation. If you can't guess which one of the two I mean when talking about after effects, then I really don't know how to clear it up for you. context.
And I never said don't use them for Compositing or 3D. Maybe you should reread what the topic is and my post. As it's "What's the BEST animation program." AE is NOT the best comp'ing program. And blender and Maya can't just be dropped as the best 3D program due to the extensive pipeline of the industry, and the advantages and differences of applications.
this is a topic made by a sixteen year old asking what software he should look into getting. he's not looking for a deep discussion on the merits of every animation program in existence. I gave a fair list of programs that he could very easily access which cover most styles of digital animation. I don't see how you could possibly take issue with these suggestions. context.
At 10/19/14 03:32 PM, PeterSatera wrote: You said the most common packages people hear and the ones you use. They aren't the best...far from it. The fact you said "Toon Boom". Toon boom what? thats like me saying. "Adobe". And After effects for stop motion. I laughed.
"don't use maya for 3d, and certainly don't use after effects for compositing"

I laughed.
I also never said anything about stop motion and have no idea where you're getting that bit from.

great job Stejk! awesome year all around
guess what guys, final round means it's finally time for another sarcastic collab!
the theme this time is VFX, so get ready to animate some explosions, dust clouds, flames, or whatever other type of effect you can come up with! As always, the collab is open to all, so get to it.
more info can be found in Pahgawks latest news post.
Wish some more of the nata pieces would have made it, but it's always nice to see Butzbo getting loved on!
you're making this way more complicated than it needs to be.
import the swf files into After Effects, then bring in your audio track, then do whatever other editing you still need to do.
export from After Effects.
I honestly don't know who's animation I should be more excited to see

I recently noticed that loopdeloop recommends Swivel. There really ought to be more cross pollination between you guys and them than there currently is.

I'd say it's a bit overwhelming like this. Might be nice to keep it all concise, it's kind of hard to even read all the titles like this, much less watch them. Becomes more of an icon scanning party than anything else. Plus if you keep it up at this rate, there won't be any classics to list next year. Maybe a short highlights list with a link to a longer one like this at the post's end would work well?
On another note, just saw that monthly voting is open and damn this was a good month. Two rounds worth of nata and a ton of shorts from well knowns and new people. Way too much for just ten top-picks.
i like BLUEE all the way... but wich is da best for u???? blue
well now that that's finally been sorted once and for all, can we please get the whole 'apples and oranges' debacle figured out?
yeah and on that note, does anyone know if red or blue is the better color?
I made a this
a couple weeks ago I found a spider in my bed, so now here's this.

would love to, but I'll probably be nataing pretty hard this weekend
If you wait until the 15th you may have a few of us nata guys that don't make the final round looking for a nice cool-down animation kinda thing to work on

anyone can enter, but you'd better get on it cause today is robot day!
hey speaking of robot day there's still room in the next Sarcastic Collab for anyone who wants to join in on the fun!
The theme this time is, of course, robots! Animate something robotronic and PM it over to me if you want in, here are the specs:
- 720 x 405
- 24fps
- make it sarcastically robotic!
- we're aiming to submit it tomorrow, so make it snappy!
- then send me the fla, or a png sequence if you aren't using flash.
