With Israel's attacks on Lebanon many Canadians(like everyone else) are attempting to flee the fighting. But when you look a the numbers there are an incredibly large number of Canadians(apx 50,000) requesting evacuation compared to many other countries(USA 25000, Italy 350, etc). This gives our government huge problems since it costs a lot of money to evacuate 50,000 people.
Now the debate has come forward that Canadians who just happened to be vacationing in Lebanon should be evacuated before dual-citizens. Another arguement has come forward that dual citizens who don't have a permanent residence in Canada shouldn't be evacuated at all since they are effectively Lebanese. The arguement used to counter this is "A Canadian, is a Canadian, is a Canadian" saying that holding a passport is reason enough for the government to help you out of the country.
Personally I think that anyone who holds a passport and wants out should be given passage by the government. I know this doesn't only apply to Canada, so I'm leaving it open to any other nationalities as well.
