Shure Pg81 Garbage Or Underrated? Posted December 26th, 2010 in Audio

Merry Christmas all. I received a Condenser PG 81 from my Girlfriend. I'm planning on using it as a drum overhead or acoustic mic. Anyone have experience with it? Trolling the internet yields many-a home studio forum rants about how the SM 81 is far superior and the PG 81 is junk. (Of course the SM 81 is better, but it costs 3x as much)

Anyone have one? Input? It's still in the packaging, should I keep it? Thanks!

Is this true? Lodger's website is now offline and they haven't updated in almost a year. I think they may have broken up but there is no release :/

Saw these Lodger live about 3 years ago in Toronto

Response to: The instrumental song list Posted December 15th, 2010 in Audio

This may have already been talked about but It'd be nice to have a tagging system, so someone can tag Real Instruments or Midi, among other things.

I've never composed anything electronically, but I don't have anything against it, there are some great MIDI based songs on here. In Electronic music's defense, it hard to find a medium to get your music out there and Newgrounds is kinda a safe haven for it.

I or any other live performer can book shows, or just perform, which is, in my opinion, an amazing advantage and reward for being both performers and songwriters.

Hey all, my band is putting out a new album in the next few weeks. We have put quite a bit of time, effort, and money into this, including doing some partnering for distribution and big plans for promotion.

Would anyone be interested in review an Alternative/Indie Rock album? I have plenty of local fans, but I wanna have some ears that haven't heard us live, or think of us in a certain context. I'm interested in a really critical review.

If you are, I'll send you an advance of the album if you review it. Just PM me and I'll send it to you. Thank-you!

It's all good, I asked the same questions a few years ago. Still, I'm confused what your asking, do you want to plug the Mic into the Guitar amp to sing with, or do you want to record the amp with your microphone? Or do you mean plug the amp into the mixer and then into the computer?

If it's using the Amp to sing, that's not a good idea, Guitar speakers aren't meant to reproduce the that type of sound and usually it ends up hurting the speaker in the long run. If it's a practice amp, and you don't care about it, sure you can do it, it just won't sound all that great.

You can def. record the amp with a mic

Also, you could potentially plug the amp into the mixer (depending on if your amp has an out) and then plug the mixer into the computer but your results wound't sound as good if you just miced the amp.

The Shure 58 (along with basically any microphone, whether condenser or dynamic) uses a XLR cable.

You can buy an XLR to USB converter.

Phantom power is only necessary for condensers mics, they actually need a small amount of electricity to operate, therefore you have to plug a Condenser mic into a mixer, and then the mixer into your computer.

Condensers pick up higher frequencies which means their essentially better for Cymbals and little intricacies of acoustic instruments. Believe me you won't care and probably wound't notice if I played you an acoustic guitar recorded by either a condenser or dynamic.

I read the article and it's right if you want the best quality recording you should use two condenser mics. However, to be honest, no one will notice and you'll be blowing $500 on Mics + Mixer.

However, with a Shure 58 you get a mic that will essentially record just about anything, and give you a standard good quality.

JackRocker - I have a Peavy PV6 http://www.samedaymusic.com/product--PEV PV6

However, I just upgraded to an Alesis io 26 but have yet to try it out.

If you buy a condenser mic you will need phantom power. A low quality condenser will cost you atleast 100 and that doesn't include the mixer you'll need for phantom power

Although Condensers are meant for acoustic instruments I would recommend a Shure 58 or Shure 57. Honestly, you won't notice the difference and even in the eyes of experts the quality won't be "better" it will just be different.

The shure 58 is the industry standard, work horse microphone, on top of that you can use it for vocals, amps etc and it's built like a tank. Every instrument/vocal on this track was recorded with a Shure 58

Condensers are fragile and usually break easily, however if you really want one, go for it but know what your getting into.

Best of luck!

Use a SHURE 58, it is the Industry standard, you can take the screen off to basically make it a Shure 57. It costs about 99 and keeps its resale value. You can get one used for probably 80

Additionally, it is the industry standard for live performance as well. They are also bullet proof.

Shure 58 vs Shure 57 A difference? Posted December 7th, 2010 in Audio

Hey All,

I'm starting to expand my little basement studio. I've got a few Shure 58's, and a few condensers, but my question is -

Is there really a difference between the Shure 58 and Shure 57? From what I've read the only difference is the screen on it.

Therefore, is it worth it to buy a 57 or can't I just stick with the 58's and take off the cap when I'm not recording vocals?

Thanks!

if i see it at a retailer, i'm buying it. i'm the kind of person that likes to have a physical copy of things :)
seriously though, i'm buying it. i liked your older stuff.

As for appearing at a retailer, it seems like most retailers don't "stock" your CD unless you reach a certain Nielsen Chart Rating (you've sold some 10,000 cds etc). Regardless it's great to see people actually buy CDs, and at the very least we've partnered with Super D which allows retailers to order us if asked.

Just as an update, We ended up going with CDbaby. They take about 9% on digital downloads and Distribute to Itunes, Rhapsody, etc. They take $4 per physical cd, but they are partnered with super D which means any retailer can order your CD (But who buys physical CDS from a retailer? The only time we've actually sold physical CDs is right after shows)

I think they were the better deal, as they charge a one time distribution fee compared to a Tunecore which charges a $40 yearly fee to distribute.

Response to: Make Music With Garageband Properly Posted December 2nd, 2010 in Audio

I've used Garageband to record and mix the demos for my band and it's a fairly competent easily accessible program for recording. However, for mastering I've found that to be it's greatest flaw. I have the 08' version, anyone know if there's been any leaps or improvements over the past design?

Distribution networks (CdBaby etc) Posted November 28th, 2010 in Audio

Hey all,

My local band has put quite a bit of money and effort into a full length album and right now we are considering distribution partnerships. The first thing that comes to our minds is Tunecore or CDbaby but does anyone know of any other alternatives they've been happy with?

We are going for Physical Dist. (Kunaki) and Digital.

I was reading the manual from a Alesis io 26 and it has an interface for direct hook-up for live turn table mixes but i'm sure there's a cheaper option.

I'd agree with what just about everyone here says. Even if you love music, you may want to consider it a fun hobby, and pursue something else. Music will always be there, and you can always turn to it, but it is really tough making a living at it. You have to work very hard, and those that go to school, generally, even for music performance, end up teaching. The guy that plays bass in my band has a Master's in classical guitar performance, and he's, imo, an amazing classical guitarist, but he makes his living mowing lawns, and being a sound man on the weekends. (and even then doesn't make very much compared to paying back his loans)

Think really hard about this before you invest your time and money into it.

Tactics for Posting a Flash Posted October 13th, 2010 in General

've been collaborating on a really professional looking flash that's been taking a few months, and won't be out for another few months. And I have a question -

I've seen some really great flashes. some making front page, but when they first come out get Zero-bombed to a mediocore 3.0 score, simply so people can attain a better blam ranking. My specific question is, are there Known tactics to posting and achieving a higher score, daily first or front page? Obviously there a lot that needs blaming, but do artists find it worthwhile to post professional flashes during a certain time of the day, with a certain description such as Vote Fairly or the Amount of work, etc? Does a super spiffy looking loading screen help a lot

Any advice? Thanks all

Response to: Live Instrument Music Posted September 14th, 2010 in Audio

I've found a decent number of live instrumentation songs, It'd be great if they introduced a tagging system or something, as of the moment, the newgrounds audio portal is lacking a credible search system. (honestly, as is the search option for the flash portal).

All the songs I posted are live instrumentation, Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals. I would stick to Rock/Grunge/Indie and MISC for most live instrumentation.
