I also use an Alesis 8 with Firewire and have found it to be a very competent interface for the price. I'm not sure but the USB may not be able to do simultaneous multi-tracking, atleast the older models didn't which is why I went with the Firewire version.

Also, what do you plan on recording?

Response to: Best all around microphone Posted April 11th, 2011 in Audio

Shure SM58 is the industry Standard Live Vocal Mic and it is very flexible. Shure makes a USB version of it.

We change tempo all the time...but that's only because we don't play to a click track...

Response to: "Proof" from a sound engineer Posted March 31st, 2011 in Audio

Thanks for the prompt replies, I'm familiar with the difference between mixing and mastering. I suppose what I was wondering is if a "proof" is the finished product including mastering or the finished product mixed he starts mastering.

"Proof" from a sound engineer Posted March 31st, 2011 in Audio

Need some help with the Lingo,

What exactly is a "Proof", as a sound engineer has recently sent me from songs he is mixing. Is This mixing, prior to mastering, or the latter? Thanks!

Response to: Selling an album? Posted February 17th, 2011 in Audio

Don't have alot of time but I would recommend

http://www.kunaki.com/

They do small batch CD printing, for your Physical CD needs. You can even get one made and shipped to you for fuckin' free.

For digital -

I would recommend distribution with either tunecore or CDbaby. They will get you on itunes, limewire, blah blah blah

Also I would recommend bandcamp, for another avenue.

Doubtful you will be able to sell "just the whole album", as consumers demand being able to download single tracks and therefore distributors oblige.

goodluck!

For reals? They banned it in Canada? What was the reasoning? Different IP laws?

Pandora Posted February 14th, 2011 in Audio

Has anyone gotten their music on Pandora, and if so have they found it to be a successful outlet for promoting their music?

An actual "For Sale" Bulletin board ad I wrote awhile ago. The idea is that this guitar is a piece of shit. With the right voice actor, comedic timing and animation, it could be humorous. (you might have to cut it down to reach a minute timeline)
-----

For Sale - Satan's Guitar

There comes a point in every mans life where he feels the need to pass down some history or perhaps a legacy; that time is now. For the low price of $150 you too may enter the gates of manhood.

I bought this guitar for 350 dollars from a retired mercenary that fought in both World War I and World War II. The only reason he sold it was because his right arm bitten off by a shark in the Philippines while stationed there as a shark handler. When he sold it to me I had to arm wrestle him for the honor to buy it; I broke his arm in 7 places.

What kind of Guitar is it? I don't know, I'm not a Guitar scientist. What I am though is a manly guy looking to sell his guitar. This instrument is made out of sinister basswood and kick ass Super Slinky strings. The volume knobs don't work so you can't turn the guitar off, but if you think that deterred me from rocking out, you're way wrong. The first thing they teach about rock is that there is only one volume level, and that's eleven. Not having working volume knobs is like saying "FUCK YOU WORLD, JUST TRY AND STOP ME".

The guitar has some rusted strings, but that just shows people how much of a bad ass you are. Everyone knows rusted strings on a guitar mean that you probably played it underwater and that's bad ass in itself.
This beast of uncontainable power sounds sick when pushed behind a Huge Swollen Pickle, a Big Muff, or any of other overpriced analog pedal that makes obvious sexual references to your manhood.

Additionally, this instrument of all immense evil comes with a moldy retro plaid case to keep it secure and to throw any would be thieves off the trail.

If you email me asking about being "firm" on the price I will tell you right now that I am NOT. $150 is only my starting price, you may want to pay me more after you see it in person. (585)555-xxxx

I must tell you that 99.99% of tracks uploaded to the sexy audio portal are loops and non vocal songs, and most of songs that have vocals are hip hop and rap songs.

Wohoo! Finally I'm noticed for something. We're a 00.01 percenter!

Response to: Bandcamp Posted January 15th, 2011 in Audio

I use Bandcamp and their pretty decent, I actually use them as my homepage for www.dreamsfromgin.com

You can let users download the albums for free which doesn't cost you anything, but if you charge money then they take a 15% fee for each album.

They pay you through pay-pal and pay-pal additionally takes .45 cents.

So for example, I sell my album for $5 but only end up with 3.55 after Paypal and bandcamp take their share. I'd say their good though, they really let you in-depth track how many plays, and how people were referred so you have an idea of how people hear about you.

I'd say if they allowed a little more customization to their site they'd be great.

Response to: Glyn John's Drum Recording Techniq Posted January 4th, 2011 in Audio

It ended up working out really good! I'll post a short sample of just the drums if anyone is interested in hearing the quality/dynamics.

Glyn John's Drum Recording Techniq Posted January 3rd, 2011 in Audio

Going to do some recording tomorrow of a three piece band.

I have four mics set aside for the drum kit, a PG81 (Condenser), a SM58, a SM57, and a MXL 990 (Condenser).

I'm going to try the Glynn John's technique for recording the drums, spot mic the Bass and Snare with the SM57 and SM 58 respectively. Then use the PG 81 as an Overhead, directly in front of the snare. Use the other overhead, over the tom on the right hand side of the drummer.

Anyone use this technique? Anyone have any advice? Should I be worried about using two different condensers?

Here's a pic of the technique-

Response to: Get Your Music On Itunes For Free Posted January 1st, 2011 in Audio

If your intentions are honest to work as a distributor than that's great, but I understand everyone else's animosity.

Kind Sketchy if you don't have a company name, website, e-mail address, contact info and your asking for the distribution rights to people's artistic works. What is going to stop you from just keeping all the profit? How do we know your trustworthy?

On-top of all this...it only takes about $40 or even less to reach all those networks you mentioned through CD baby or Tunecore. Only ten dollars for singles, and those are reputable companies,

I think you just need to explain exactly what your doing, how you planning on going about it, and what you can offer artists that they can't get elsewhere. Best of luck.

Response to: Audio Portal Age Ratings Posted January 1st, 2011 in Audio

I don't really think anything more than "Explicit" or "Not" is needed, nothing more than that is needed for the RIAA.

Honestly, a Content rating system isn't even necessary for Music on newgrounds. There isn't anything illegal (in most western countries) about exposing people to explicit music on the internet (as long as it's not broadcasted on radio waves and regulated by the FCC or whatever Government Entity in the subject country.)

Flashes or Art can be pornographic and you enter murky legal territory if you don't warn about the content, as the law varies by state/country.

Response to: ~>the Garageband Q&a/chat Corner!<~ Posted December 28th, 2010 in Audio

Great, that works Quarl, thanks!

Isn't as great as audicitiys amplify, as it doesn't auto show the clip level (you have to watch the red in GB). Still, it's workable.

Thanks again!

Response to: ~>the Garageband Q&a/chat Corner!<~ Posted December 28th, 2010 in Audio

In Audicity there is an Amplify feature which is very useful when recording live instruments and bumping their levels way up after compressing them.

In Garageband is there a way to amplify the audio in a similar way? It seems like Garageband only lets you turn up the audio a little bit, which is useless if you've got a very low recording.

Response to: Shure Pg81 Garbage Or Underrated? Posted December 26th, 2010 in Audio

Well let's hope so, I'll try to be gentle with the little guy. I've decided to keep it and I'll be testing it as a drum overhead mic with another condenser MXL (another crappy condenser), and two SM57s for spot mics. (Using the Glynn John's Technique)

We'll see what happens! (and you will too in a few weeks when I post the song). Thanks!

Response to: Shure Pg81 Garbage Or Underrated? Posted December 26th, 2010 in Audio

Free money is better than free unsatisfactory microphone.

I think SBB knows what I'm getting at. I'd take that money and get a different condenser. haha, and I don't think my girlfriend would be too offended :)
