Alright, so, I've read 3 books now on very basic music composition.
-The Everything Music Composition Book
-Idiots Guide to Music Composition
-Music Composition for Dummies
Now, obviously these aren't the greatest resources in the world. The first half of each book is usually a quick summary of music theory, and the second half is a rush job of trying to explain everything there is about writing music. I have no problems with notation, and I understand basic music theory fine. I know how to write chord progressions, find keys, scales, chords, etc.
Regardless, I am still kind of stuck on where to go and how to "actually compose" music. The books provided examples about how to make basic melodies, and how to tie melodies to chord progressions and such, but any music I listen to sounds drastically different. Even looking at midi files from old games and such confuses me. Some parts there is harmony, some parts there is only a melody, some songs have a percussion background throughout, etc. And of course, the books don't explain much about when to use each.
So, what this long blob of text is really asking, is what should I read/where should I go from here?
