Topic: Critique my engine so far

Posted: 02/01/09 01:25 PM

Forum: Flash

Cool. As Magical-Zorse mentioned, it's a bit jumpy, but I'm sure you can work it out. This engine reminds me of my first 2d engine in its early versions, later used by Portal TFV. It was super simple, and at first, didn't work well on thin lines as well ;)
In your engine, if the player jumps from a high platform, and gains speed with gravity, the Y the player moves each frame can actually exceed the possibility of the ground and player to hitTest. And thus, I was thrown down the pit just a second ago playing your engine even though I was supposed to land well on a platform.

There are a couple of ways to solve this. You can calculate and check every pixel in the gap created and see if you missed a platform, but this will cost a lot of cpu. Anoter way I used, simply set a maximum Y speed. Later when I used my engine in ptfv it was very necessary, because you could basically gain unlimited speed using portals so I had to limit it.

Yeah I realized that after I posted.

I am from Israel.
Here's a post in ynetnews. It's a sad day... many casualties from both side are expected.
I didn't mean any offense to you your country or anyone that has or will die. it just didn't occur to me right away that Israel are a FWC until I posted. IM SORRY AND I HOPE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE OKAY.

Np. I'm fine, luckily I live in the center of Israel. Those who live in the south, however, are getting bombed daily. I'm not a big fan of wars... but I think our (Israel's) 'disproportionate' response is legitimate. The heads of the other side simply does not accept this country's right to exist.

.. And in this topic, I would like to mention again how I find it insulting to see this (/476393) game in the front page...

I have no idea what's going on on that site now.
But back when it was nice and simple, me and my friends used to drive guides crazy. We talked about 300 and brought up movie quotes with them. Oh, my friend once asked, "HOW DO I SHOOT WEB?" and the guide said "IMA CHARGIN YOUR RESULTS". It was a female guide, by the name. Funny as hell.

I cannot reveal those details just yet.

I am making one and was wondering whats out there already.

I've been tracking some Newgrounds posted RTS games, here's what I got:
Battlegrounds
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/26 7918
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/30 4344
Tank Wars
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/41 4001
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/41 4520
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/41 8759
Drone Wars
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/42 4857

Probably missed a lot, but yeah those are the real time strategy that I got in my folder so far.

I'm working on a flash RTS myself. I think we could convince the NG staff to open us an RTS collection by the end of 08.

Topic: Artist & Animator needed

Posted: 02/23/08 01:05 PM

Forum: Flash

Howdy.
I've been working on a new flash game for a while, and I think it's time to build up the team and move a couple of stages up - I need an artist/animator by my side.

It's still in early stages so there's not much to show yet, and anyway, it looks horrible because it uses some stick animations I temporarily made for myself. But you can look at my previous programmed game, Portal: The Flash Version .

I can't go into too many details about the game, but graphically, you can think of it as a 2D RTS.

This is a big job, and it will take weeks to complete. The animator will need to animate various types of characters, some backgrounds, and effects. I will go into full details in person. I expect the animator to be experienced with optimizing animations, in order to save unnecessary processing, due to the game type.

I also hope to share and discuss the ideas and concepts. I'm an artist myself, but I'd prefer to focus on the coding on this project. So it also requires an open mind, and pretty much, being a daily gamer.

The game is developed using Adobe Flash CS3. Therefore I think it is fair enough to require the artist to own at least Macromedia's version 8.

FAQ
Are you willing to pay?

TWSS.

Yes.
How much?
We will talk about it in person.

If you think you're good enough, contact me by PMing here @ NG, emailing (dragy2005 AT hotmail DOT com) or Messenger (same hotmail address).
Please have some animations ready for showcasing. Also, I might require you to animate me something specific to see how the communication goes between us. So be emotionally ready for that.

That's about it, hope hearing from you animators soon ;)

Ido.

Topic: Health AS

Posted: 01/06/08 01:21 PM

Forum: Flash

If I got you right, then define the health
var health:Number = 100;

You wanted the health to randomly decrease or increase, so we'll have to use the random() method. So when the button is pressed:

health += Math.floor(Math.random()*20-10);

This will add the health number -10 to 10 randomly. Math.floor should fix 'ugly' numbers.

if you don't want the health to get under 0 or above 100, use conditional stuff after changing the health var,

if(health>100){
health = 100;
}else if (health<0){
health= 0;
}

Hope this helps.

At 12/15/07 08:40 AM, WolfAkela wrote: I'm getting a PSP at the end of the month, so I fancied making Flash that the PSP can support. Up to what Flash and AS does the PSP support?

The PSP (officially, not sure about homebrew) support flash player 6 AS 2.0, I think. You could probably Google that. The thing is, its processor probably won't take most of the movies and games you're gonna make for it. I tried many times, I was disappointed.
I couldn't hide the cursor, no shared object and you can only detect the keys and click (O or X, can't remember). I tried detecting mouse movement which means joystick, and I did it fine, but once again I couldn't hide the mouse and also if the mouse hit one of the edges, there's nothing you can do.

That's my experience with it flash and PSP. But maybe they got it better by now, I tried that months ago.

..., Portal: TFV, and it exploded, I keep getting these user mail confirmations for websites I never even heard about, not to mention registered before. The username tends to be 'JakWii'.
I tried everything but I couldn't find info about that username or its source, so other than deleting these mails as I get them, there's nothing I can do. It's just another spam source, just the source is fine, but being used by an asshole.

I keep wondering, is it a bot, or is it some idiot trying to get attention? I received over 20 of these in the last two weeks or so. Once again it's not that bad, I just wonder if it's anything I should expect after releasing a 'big hit'. Because I seriously hate my mail address anyway, maybe I should just leave it and check it once a week, and open a new, clear one.

Oh, and I have no idea why I'm posting it here. I guess I like it here.

I'll say again, looks very promising.
I have a question - will the game have these 'massive enemy attacks' like in Diablo 2? I mean, about 20 enemies rushing at you in one screen, and you just slay them one by one (or all together, using an awesome spell ;)? Will your engine be able to take it?
Also, I'm not very familiar with the Paladin series - will you be the only one who fights, or will you meet allied npcs to help you in battle? or perhaps you'll be able to summon npcs to help in battle?

Yup, a lot of sounds, you'll understand as I release the game :)
And that's exactly what I do right now - using them all through the script, exporting in the first frame through that check in the library.
The "export in first frame", I think, is what actually does all of this because it's being loaded before the loader, but when I uncheck it they don't seem to play anymore using that script.

Make a frame before the preloader, and start all of the sounds that you're using in the flash file and have them all set to Stream.

Then it should go to the preloader and load from 0% (Not sure though, it's been a while since I needed to do this)

Hope this helps.

Hi Jindo, thanks for the reply. I once heard about something like this, the thing is, I have about 90 sounds exported that way. Does that mean I have to create 90 different layers and stream them all that way?
If nothing else works I sure will try it, but I doubt that's what all of the games with many script exported sounds did.

Overall, 1.5 mb, and it will become bigger since I did not add the credits scene yet which includes another song. The preloader has a couple of movieclips, no sounds whatsoever. All of my linkaged sounds have a "export in the first frame" though, and I'm guessing that's what makes them come first. But as far as I remember you gotta check it to call them through the script.

Howdy.
I asked this question around here before but nobody replied, and now my game is about to be released and I really need this.
I made a loader, alone weights about 6kb. My game weights, so far, 1.5 megs, most of it made of sounds and music. The loader, as I mentioned in the title, starts at about 60% which is quite bad, while before that all you can see is a blank screen. Obviously the problem is I export all of my linkaged sounds in the first frame, but can't I somehow make sure the loader loads first? I mean there is no "export in the second frame", so what can I do?

Thanks a bunch!
