Considering Windows XP was released in 2001 and you stated that your computer is 7 years old, I only assumed it was at least for Windows 2000. Judging by the specs of the computer, it only seems likely the computer was made for 98/2k/ME (although ME sucks which is why I didn't recommend it above).
Still, try the
Clean Boot, it will make a noticeable difference.
Try a Clean Boot for starters. Then a Defrag, and lastly run some malware scans with whatever security suites you have. If you don't have any, I recommend avast! Anti Virus, Spybot S&D, and Adaware.
If none of the above makes much difference, use an operating system that your computer was designed for; 98 or 2k.
