It's because the French are one of the ideal "humanatarian" countries. Yet when they are given the chance to stop some crazy madman like Saddam they do absolutely nothing. I doubt Bush will lose the next election, because the war has boosted his support.
No, it's because the French don't think that a situation like this has to be solved by taking your cock out and smacking people with it. The United States government has some sort of idea that the only diplomacy is "warship diplomacy", wherein we bomb people who have things we want, like oil, resources, a hold in the Middle East, etc. The last thing the French want to see is a Anglo-centric Middle East, where there will be dictatorial rule based on American rules. Considering we completely lack a democracy here, it's not surprising. It's also not surprising that we are doing this, considering we have done it to all of these happy countries as well:
Nicaragua, Panama, Chile, Grenada, South Vietnam (when it was still a country), Iran (we did it when we put the Shah in power, and we want to do it again to the democratic Prime Minister), Haiti.
The United States is an imperialist money-grubber. But so are all of the major powers of the world. If people would start listening to people who are trying to send the real populist message (Michael Moore comes to mind), they'd actually be fucking pissed out of their minds as to how powerful they've allowed corporate fat-cat white men get. However, the people the American people listen to (because they're on the television networks owned by the same fat-cat white men) tell them that the real problem is Michael Moore, liberals, black people, poor people, foreigners, and basically anyone who is not a rich plutocrat. Enron is okay to do, and no one cares, but when Sammy Sosa ends up with a corked bat, it becomes an uproar of an issue. The fact the Bush administration has not found WMD is pushed aside by the news media so they can go cover the Scott Peterson trial. It's fucking ridiculous.
Oh, and with all hope, I hope Bush loses in 2004. However, the Democratic Party is no better. They just lie and say they're helping the people, whereas the Republicans come straight out and say, "We're fucking you over little guy so we can line our pockets and buy our goddamn boats and strippers."
