once contains a handful of tutorials from all over. The other is my tutorial site that I have been running for sometime. Both sites cover content on how to use Flash as a tool for animation

since the characters shoes are black and so is Space. try cheating this scene by using a dark blue shoes or alternatively using a thin white line or a highlight line on the shoes so that it does not blend in with the background.

pretty decent lipsync example. You might be missing two mouth shapes
1. This appears at the "lo" part of "Hellooo"
2. This appears at the "wa" part of "whats up?"
here are a couple of pointers when using bitmap fonts
1. The x,y position of the text field should be an integer. Avoid decimal values.
Im pretty sure this should solve your problem
2. the font size as to be 8px. Not sure if its still reads clear with 16x
3. the text field should be at 100% scale, It cannot be skewed or rotated.
4. you can apply filters to it. but you cannot bold or italicize the text
5. Can be aligned, or center justified (this needs confirmation though)
6. I believe 'anti alias for animation' or 'bitmap text' works
At 2/21/13 02:07 PM, NoLanLabs wrote: For reference, I'm using Flash CS5.5 and this font.
I'm trying to use a bitmap font for a pixelart game, and the M & W (the widest characters) keep getting cut off on the right side. As you can see in the picture, the font looks fine at 8 pt, but not at 16. And it looks like the antialiasing fixes the problem, but obviously that won't work because it's fuzzy.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? It's really driving me nuts.

Hey Nathan
I might be willing to help, but I don't see any works that you have done for the community or newgrounds.
If you have any work that you have contributed to a collaboration on ng, feel free to upload it here and shoot me a reply though this forum post
All the best

Have you tried newgrounds own swf to video converter? Swivel

Good work so far, you are almost getting there.
I like that you have alternated the arm sway action. That is good attention to details. Try making the say delayed by one frame so that the opposite leg reaches it's extreme first and then the matching hand reaches its end a frame later.
Also put a little bounce to the passing pose.
I had written a walkcycle tutorial sometime back that may be helpful to get around the theory of biped walkcycles. ref: http://www.devilsgarage.com/tutorials/easy-walk-cycle/

Thank you for the compliment, I have been working hard on this.
And correct me if I'm wrong, so your saying that I should make the bird and the cat "opposite" colors (like red and green). :And another thing, would the brown I already have for the cat work? or do you think I'd be better off using something brighter, :like something that has more UMPH! to it, rather than brown. Because I like the brown, I just don't know if it well, works or not.
Try using a lighter shade of brown, leaning more towards the orange brown pallet. That way the cat would pop from the earthly toned background. Once you have settled on a color for the cat, pick a complementary color. If that looks odd, try the settings on colorschemedesigner.com like the triads, analogics etc

There are a lot of exhaustive books that cover the topic of colors, but I'm gonna skim the surface of colors and hopefully get you rolling with your project, Isolated Man.
First off, Pretty decent animation, and looks like a lot of work has been pumped into this.
I took a screengrab of a still and used cssdrive.com/imagepalette to grab all the colors that you have used in the animation. IMAGE
From the color pallet, I grabbed one of the brown's hex value (#382400) and ran a search on colorlovers.com to get complementary colors to that brown.
Pick a color pallent (1 to 5) and use it as the color base for your animation. Since the animation revolve around the cat and the bird, make them bright colored so that they pop out form the background (visually speaking). You could paint the cat one of the red colors. And if you want to find out the complementary color to that red, grab the hex value and use colorschemedesigner.com to give you more complementary colors for the bird so that they have the same color.
As for the lighting, which inturn affects the shadow; try to place yourself in that environment and feel where the sun should be. If the sun is on the west side of the cat, The tree would cast a shadow on the cat and everything on the shadow area of the tree would look darker. If the sun is at 12 (noon) the cats shadow would fall right below it. Try thinking of different positions of the sun/light source to lighten up your art.
There seems to be some problem with the link. I can't open the file.

Dude! thanks for the wall of information.
I have to say I find Flash's drawing tools very strange and for years had to work around it. Though my speed has increased quiet a bit, I do like TB drawing tools. Also TB is way more stable than Flash.
Thanks for all the info, much appreciate it

Not sure if this is a solution, but something very similar happened to me
these are the two options I tried
1. Do not any other program running that audio file. I had winamp accessing my .wav and Flash would just not import that file. I copied my .wav file to the desktop and tried importing and it worked
sometimes for reason beyond my technical understanding, this still didn't work. so
2. I opened the file in audacity (or whatever audio editing program you use) and saved a copy of the wav. This seemed to work
All the best
Let me upload that file again later tonight

yo,
Good going with your 24frame collaboration (: Though Id give you some feedback so you can push the quality of your animation since there is time (deadline is the middle of March).
Since it's only 24 frames = 1 second. by basic animation principles, try to focus your animation on one thing.
For example, either make the sun rise* at the back or have the thing growing out his head the main focus of the animation. That way when a viewer sees this for a second, the viewer will have enough time to focus on that one animated thing and understand what is animated.
*If you think animating the sun is what you want to do, try including some environmental factors, like have the sky blue in the first frame and tween it to a bright orange. This will help amplify the sun rising effect.

The thing is, the topic of the animation is meant to be from the school curriculum (which basically means it can be anything, history, book (as in old book), science, maths related), I just can't think of what would be a good topic, which would include a lot of movement (so i can can "show off" what I can do) and just be good for something like that...?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated:)

Go here http://bbs.coldhardflash.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=459. Has a handful of tutorials on Flash and animation
This is indeed a very thoughtful idea.
This should be a feature in th NG project system
This issue has always troubled me since the early days of Flash. I wish there were a large degree of compatibility between each version released.
I do know that one Flash Coder wrote a tool to convert a CS6 and CS5.5 to CS5 using only Flannel.
read more about it here http://ajarproductions.com/blog/2012/03/06/flannel-open-newe r-fla-files/
This may not be the solution to everything. But it's a start
The line tool shouldn't be that intimidating. Early shows like Mucha Lucha, Happy Tree Friends, or Maggie the Fly also used the line tool very well. Chris Gregorio wrote a good book on how to cheat in Flash which is a really good book to get started with some quality animation examples.

They do use flash, but there are like 100+ people animating.
Looks like i'll have to stick to what 1 person can do at home :D
I used to work with the earlier versions of toonboom, till I landed a job in the broadcast animation industry.
From my experience only a handful of companies that I worked with were using toonboom, either because they had a pretty decent budget to work with (time=money) or was eyeing for a more traditional look in the art direction.
Since the last seven years I have been working extensively with Flash, knowing that with each version Adobe is not exactly being pro-animator (rather pro interactive) and thus I have been slowly moving back to toonboom.
At 2/12/13 07:26 PM, BabySteps wrote: I've used both, and i've gotten REALLY familiar with flash, but enjoy the features of toon boom.
i feel with toon boom, i can make my animation look so much better than i could with flash.
but with flash, i can animate faster than with toon boom and it's laid out better.
the cons of flash is that it crashes more than it should and brush strokes are sloppy
the pros are that it's easy to use, better laid out, and can operate faster on it.
the cons of TB is that it takes ME longer to animate with it.
the pros are that it seems to look better and has a lot more features animation wise.(excluding action script)
which do you prefer, toon boom? or flash?
discuss.
I'm interested in animation, and have been for a long time. I finally have the resources and time to persue this media, but I'm still in the process of choosing a program to work with.
I was in the same ship many years back. What are your choices of programs you have in mind. Knowing that I might be able to give you a better answer.
