Love the controller in your sig lol.
Thanks, I actually made if for a joke thread a while back .
Check out the thread for some hilarity. People were actually buying into it.

Yes! Perfect! Thank you. Looks like Microsoft actually fixed something with IE7. Looks like that's one less browser I'll have to worry about. IE6 is the only one screwing it up! (What a surprise.)
The link didn't work. Sorry about that.
Can someone take a screenshot of this webpage in Internet Explorer 7? I need to see if I'm getting the same error that I'm getting in Internet Explorer 6. It's near the bottom of the page, so make sure you that you don't leave the bottom out (if your resolution makes you have to scroll.)
(BTW: Yes, I am the website designer.
Yes, Internet Explorer 6 sucks. (I use Firefox)
Yes, I know I could download IE7, but then I would lose IE6, which I still need because it is still the dominant browser as of now.)
Thanks for your help!

I don't quite get you there... if you mean, the calendar is automatically updated with a new month, then yes, if coded correctly ;)
I'm talking about pulling the calendar events from the calendar page and putting them on the homepage under the 'events' column. That's what this whole topic is about. I have limited space on the homepage to show six events at a time. Once the date on which an event takes place passes, I have to go in and manually change the events on the front page to allow the out of date event to go away and a new event to move up. I need a system that will do this for me. Is that clearer?

Would this method auto update with the date, or would that require extra coding?

You won't be able to do this efficiently without a PHP/MySQL backend...
Yep, I understand this. I will recode it all with some type of server-side scripting. My main questions is what language would be best to do what I need to do, and if what I am doing has been done before, can I get a link to that example. While the link for the calendars is helpful, I still need a method to do both the calendar and the frontpage from the same information.

That will be useful for just the calendar, but it won't be that helpful for the goal that I'm trying to accomplish here. I need to TRANSFER the events across to the front page. That is my problem. Hundreds of PHP and MySQL calendar templates, etc. exist. If that's all I needed, I'd have it made. I need something that does both the calendar and the frontpage. I just need a jump start to get me headed in the right direction from somebody who knows this stuff better than me. A link to a page with premade calendars just isn't beneficial for my situation. (Not trying to sound like a jackass. If I am, I apologize.)
At 10/9/06 12:04 PM, DannyIsOnFire wrote: Plenty of PHP calendars here =)
I don't need premade calendars. I have the skills to do that. Plus, I already have a calendar made. I just need a system that will take the events on the calendar and put them on the homepage under the events column. The system also needs to remove and add events as event dates pass.
I know everyone's asleep, so I'm hitting the bed as well. I'll check back around 11:00AM Central Time to see what's been said. Good night, Newgrounds.
Hey guys, I'm pretty new at web design, and I've learned a lot about CSS and (x)html. However, I'm completely clueless when it comes to server-side scripting (I just haven't had the time to study it, being in college and all). Anyways, I made a website for a local church in my community, and I need to create a system that updates the events on the webpage's calendar to the homepage event column. It's getting very old updating it manually as each date passes, and I know there has to be a way to do it. I know the server has ASP.NET on it, but MySQL and PHP are possibilities if I can convince the church's IT guy to let me use them.
This is the webpage: http://www.mcelwain.org
This is the calendar page: http://www.mcelwain.org/calendar.htm
I don't expect anyone to give me a full tutorial on this. I'm not lazy or anything. I just need to know where to start, what language is best to use, etc. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Also, if you want critique my web design, feel free. :)
Anybody have advise on how to script a calendar that would automatically pop upcoming calendar events onto my homepage. See my website at the bottom right to see what I mean by this. Currently, I can script a calendar and the list, but I really don't want to have to update both of them all the time. If I could somehow just script the 3 closest events on the calendar to appear on the homepage automatically, it would be a huge help.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Lol, yeah, that's why that page isn't quite correct yet. I'm waiting for them to send me their bios and better pictures. After I get those, I'll fix the scripting for the horizontal navigation bar on that page.
Debugging finished. The page should look the same on every browser now. Zero tables, 100% W3C compliant.
Ok, I just got done debugging the CSS. Now the page should look exactly the same on all browsers. (Safari gave me quite a scare, but after fixing the scripting for it, all the other problems on the other browsers fixed themselves.) The link on the top post should still work.
Oh, and only the top horizontal links go anywhere. I'm waiting on the church staff to send me the info to fill up the pages.
Any feedback is appreciated...oh, and if you can, state your browser and any bugs you see.
Thanks!

...and that statement...right there...shows the average Mac basher.
to copy and paste in a mac you push apple+c and apple+v respectively.

Ok, you asked for some more specs; I'll be happy to oblige. First, though, let me tell you that the Vaio does have lower specs than the Macbook Pro, but they are not to shabby. Second, I will go ahead and admit that, yes, the Macbook performs better than the Vaio because of these specs, but the point of this thread wasn't to compare the two computers. It was to inform Newgrounders about how I believe that the Macbook Pro is an excellent laptop. With that being said:
2005 Sony Vaio RB45G
3GHz Pentium 4 HT
1 GB RAM
200GB 7200rpm Serial-ATA Hard Drive
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (like I said, I don't play games)
Dual 17" LCD monitors @ 1280x1024
2006 Apple Macbook Pro
2.16GHz intel Core Duo
2 GB RAM 667 DDR2- 2x1GB SO-DIMMs
100GB 7200rpm Serial-ATA Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
15.4" glossy widescreen display @ 1440x900

Your name sucks my balls...in a bad way. (nope, I'm not going to misspell a world to look cool.
I love how all of these people are typing away to their hearts content, bashing me and bashing my computer when:
A. Probably 90% haven't used a Mac for more than 30minutes.
B. They accuse Mac owners of bashing PCs, as they bash Macs.
and C. Still refuse to read my posts that clearly state that I own both a PC and a Mac and enjoy both.
PCS 4R3 7H3 5UX0R5!!!!111!!ONE.... see, that just looks stupid.

Ok, please take the time to read all of my posts in this topic. I have already stated that I'm not a Mac guy or a PC guy. I use both. This topic was just about my recent experience with my newest toy. Nowhere in my posts do I say, "Anything besides a Mac is subpar."
I own a Sony Vaio; I love it. I own a Macbook Pro; I love it too.
conceited, btw.

1. Programs close and fail everytime the screensaver comes up.... fixable on a pc, but wants to fix things, amiright
This has never happened to me.
2. The hotkey system (clover, apple, humdinger+ key) is really a shortcut for "FREEZE COMP"
Once again, this has never happened to me.
3. Defualt settings, if you like defualt settings.... if you dont... well.... spend more money
Have you even looked at all the developers making themes and widgets for macs?
4. You dont have to worry about stuff going full screen, the little pesky bar at the bottom will stop them at 95%
If you push the "hide dock" button, then it goes away...sort of like window's start menu.
5. That operating system makes it easy for you to compleltly loose windows if you dont minimize them, becuase you have to close or hide shit to find it... looking at names in a simple bar at the bottom is just no fun.
This one I can agree with, in part, I still haven't gotten used to the setup yet, but the program bar at the top allows you to pull up the windows just fine.
6. Viruses, most are made for PC, a few dont care, mac likes these viruses, they are freinds... get one and get a new mac.
Lol, that's like saying, "A lot of people die in car crashes. If you get a sports car, and you get in a wreck...you're going to have to buy a new sports car."
I could keep going, but ill let more people experience the wonders of macs for themselves.
I think you were either working on some old macintosh from the early 90s, or you spent maybe 30 minutes at max on a mac.
By the way, I don't play games on my computer. They're a waist of time for people bored with life.
oh snap, did I go there?
Hah! I figured it out myself. Thanks for nothing NG! :P
Just for future reference, when making horizontal navigation menus, don't separate links by padding, divide the width of the entire navigation bar by the number of links to get a uniform width on each link. Then set all of the link to the same class and float them left (or right). They line up like ducks in a row! Doing this also solved my bizarre page spacing problem mentioned in the first post.
It feels so good when you finally debug all errors!

Lol, I assume you're talking to me. (Use quotes next time). Yeah, download speeds are affected by the computer, a lot. I've been using the computers (my vaio and my mac), simultaneously downloading the same files on the same network, and the macbook beats the vaio by a huge margin on every instance.
Meh, but I'm not going to argue with you. I'm not a PC guy or a Mac guy. I'm a graphic designer, so I use Mac for designing, and PC for interacting with customers. (I don't feel like buying software twice).
What makes me an asshole btw?
*Macromedia Dreamweaver to be specific.
obviously haven't gotten their hands on a Macbook Pro. I just got mine in today, and let me tell you, the thing rocks. With its 2.16GHz dual core Intels and 2GB RAM, it blows my 3GHz P4HT 1GB Vaio Desktop away. Safari opens in less than a second, and I just downloaded a trial version of Macromedia in less than 3 minutes (while watching flash movies and playing iTunes). Seriously, if you are looking for a high-powered media laptop, this is one product to consider.
Oh, and the speech recognition is a blast! All I have to say is, "Newgrounds," and I'm there, in less than a second.
Well, I was content with letting it go, but then I opened it up in Safari. Yeesh. The menu is wider, so it wraps down to the next line. This is not a good situation as I just got my Macbook Pro in today, and I am going to be using it to demonstrate the site to the church staff tomorrow. Any help on getting the kinks worked out with Safari would be greatly appreciated!
You add them to your friends list and then it will let you add them to submission.
post this in general next...or better yet, use the search bar.
I need some help fixing some bugs in my website that I am building. It seems that for some reason, Firefox is putting a complete page break underneath my horizontal navigation menu. At first glance, I thought it was a dark blue border applied to the bottom of the menu, but upon further inspection, it is indeed the background showing through (you can right-click and view the background image). I am befuddled at this since Internet Explorer 7 seems to not have this issue.
I am guessing that the bug is occurring due to my line height coding (because IE 7 needs it to make the navigation bar the proper height). You can see my CSS by replacing the index.htm in the address to homepage.css. Please take the time to help me if you can. Thanks!
I can't get Internet Explorer to show any elements with z-index applied to them. Have you looked at your page in Firefox? Also, set the z-index to 100 just to make sure something isn't over it.
Hope that helps. These browsers make CSS more frustrating than it should be.
