Yes it is a great investment. I use it for school and my artwork. It can also simply be good to add to your hardware skills.

Response to: Vector art: Flash vs Illustrator Posted February 28th, 2014 in Art

You can edit every line you draw in Flash the same way you can in illustrator though...

I know, but i am talking about the moment when you simply draw a stroke, illustrator curves it so much more than flash does in my experience, making it harder to get the lines that I wanted to achieve in a specific design.

Response to: Vector art: Flash vs Illustrator Posted February 27th, 2014 in Art

Illustrator edits every single line you draw, no matter what you do, flash is much more fluid and responsive to the unique strokes you make. I practiced drawing with my tablet in flash for a bit before i found a more powerful drawing / vector based software.

I have both, and I like both. But which one do you think goes better with Waffles? When I eat Eggs, Porkroll, and bread with butter, I usually go with Orange Juice. I however do not know or remember which one goes better with Waffles.

Apple Juice is best for/while/with waffles, eggs, porkroll, bread, butter, T.V., haircuts, sex, running, flying fast aircraft, space adventures. Orange Juice is kinda good if you have a cold.

Personally I'm pretty new to this whole art thing, but I decided to jump in with the head first... so...

Hardware:
I bought the Wacom companion. and so far, I love it.. Ive had no problems so far except a small amount of edge drift, but I'm told that's on more or less all tablets. And you can work around that by making a habit out of keeping the pen vertical at the edges....

Incredible. I decided to check out manga studio because of your post and it is now my favorite piece of software, I can so so much more with my style of artwork now!! Thanks for the great forum post idea! Although I'm still chuggin along with the lowest tier wacom product, I'll take it as a challenge.

Software:
Gimp for coloring and Manga Studio 5EX for sketching and line work... So far I like it... I would change gimp out for PS, but after A companion, I need to keep back on the spending...

So, what about you guys?

Kinda abandoned that previous piece, its not really what I want to do with my tablet. THIS however is a sneak peek at my latest piece to hopefully be finished before the week of Valentines Day.

ps. sorry if the image looks weird, it was scaled down from the full 11k x 7k render.

All you need is more practice man! And keep looking at artwork on the featured page (work that is BETTER THAN YOURS BY ALOT) and take note of what they have that you don't (that is working). Don't get stuck in you own world, you will never get better that way trust me. You're gonna be pro in no time mate.

DISCLAIMER:

"no time" = many many hours of drawing.

I recently had the idea to "cartoonify" the "#'s" the internet loves to attach to their daily activities so much. I'd love for the Newgrounds Community to check them out and tell me what you like or don't like about them, especially where you can see me improving upon their design or use!

I love it! you have a very consistent style and character personality throughout the images.

Another progress shot on my newest painting. All I have left on the face are cleaning up some hard edges and adding textures. Next time I think I'll work on textures as I render the skin, It might turn out better. I really should be working on other things but this is the least repetitive.

As I suppose you're new to it let me give to you some very basic advice. Be wary of the sketch lines and blurring. These are things I struggle with and did a lot more when I first started. Blur tools can seem like a gift from heaven, but they can also kill texture and shading. I generally avoid blurring much at all when I can. As for lines, well, I suppose this is just me, it may depend on the style you're going for, but sometimes I run into the problem of them being too prominent which kills hyper realism sometimes (because lets face it reality has no lines). Yet sometimes getting rid of them kills all the definition of your drawing. I usually keep the sketch/lines of a separate layer and use them sparingly for reference, or am very careful about the colour I use and blending them into the painting.
Dunno if this is any use to you if its an issue, or if you already know this crap, but good luck, it looks pretty so far.

Thanks for your advice! Yeah I felt really comfortable using this super soft brush. I had recently aquired some skin texture ones and may try using them much more on my next piece. And yes, my outline is on a different layer, the painting just looks stupid without them at the moment haha--I'll leave that part when I finish rendering the face. I may also merge them and mix them together where they stand out in a copy.

My first digital painting I'm working on XD. Its referenced from a portrait from the beautiful AnniePancake. I really wish I could paint traditionally but I'd loose my mind over the stress of colors and expenses haha. I've noticed I would often get really frustrated at a part for not looking good and I realized that that's just the way it is. You cant draw something once and have it look good, you have to keep working and refining it until you're satisfied.

How long have you been drawing/sketching in general? Sure tablets are awesome but they are only as good as the skill that is brought to them. I agree with what has been said above, you should show your lines and I spend the first few hours tweaking the settings, making marks in Photoshop, tweaking some more and on and on until I got somewhere I was happy with.

Your online multiplier games and good graphics are what are making it difficult to suggest anything. Those req's need a decent graphics card and there are some that can cost as much as my entire laptop itself. Either try saving 200 more bucks and wait for a sales season/get refurbished, etc, or settle with playing runescape.

Aaaaanyway, I'm in the process of animating a short loop video but I was wondering what would be the best way to do it. I am doing it frame by frame, drawing 40 vector outlines in illustrator, coloring them, then bringing them into flash to animate at around 24 fps. I wanted to leave the coloring in illustrator or flash, but found that it looked much better and was quite a bit easier overall to shade in photoshop. The linked image is the 26th frame that I chose to fully color in illustrator, while the skin is colored with photoshop. Which do you think would be easier/better? For me, Photoshop takes longer, but is much easier while illustrator is very frustrating but i could copy and paste the colors into each vector outline and modify the anchor points.

Ah allright in that cache let me tell you what i think would improve the value's.

Some values in the mouth are way too dark, in between the lips there is never a fully black value even when the mouth is fully closed it picks up light that goes through the cheek. when painted in color this crack is allmost always a dark red(since the light that goes throught the cheek and gets the red from the blood, just like your hand is red when you put it on a light).

Hair is also somewhat translucent since it has its all separate hairs forming shapes, so going really dark here is also a mistake in my book.

Her neck seems very muscle like near the bottem since the contrast in here is very high, not very lady like...

Next time you do a value drawing i'd advice you to do them on grey paper, this way you already have a mid tone, and can apply dark's and whites accordingly. instead of only adding darks, way easier to keep your values in check.

Hope this helps

Thanks man I appreciate your detailed critique, looking back now yeah the darks in the hair and mouth are quite extreme and unnecessary. The original pic does have a tad less contrast so I see how it looks too beefy now. I've never been a painter but its cool how you use your techniques in that to help me out! As for the grey paper, I think ill stick to white, I'd rather force myself to pay more attention next time so that I can really improve my skills. I don't think I can go back on every point however, some of those areas are quite deeply set in. Thanks again!

I have learned probably 75% of the artistic techniques I have under my belt from the internet, mainly youtube. I am SO much smarter since I discovered I could use the internet for more than games on Disney Channel 8 years ago haha. I think it depends on the individual.
