If I'm not the one who organizes it, then whoever does better not make it AS3 only. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with it. It's not like AS3 would help you create a better AI, besides the speed boost which allows for more intense calculations. But if you really need to make a loop that loops like 50 billion times, you better rethink your strategy. So, we should keep this at AS2 :\

I've been thinking a lot about hosting an AS war where the bots have to fight like in Megaman battle network. There would be a field of 18 tiles, 9 for each bot, and you would have to select 5 attacks at the start of a round (shoot cannon, heal, minigun, bomb, heal, etc.) and then would have to use those moves in the order they were chosen. You would be able to move 1 tile in any direction on only your tiles. You would start with, like 200 HP, and different attacks would do differing amounts of damage. The battles would have as many rounds as needed for one bot to lose, and attacks would be selected at the start of each round.

I'd host the war, but not enter because school is starting for me really soon. (It would also have to wait like 2 weeks because I'm going on vacation for a while.)

Why not just use _root.ant.gotoAndStop(7) ?

Is there some sort of glitch with that?
Response to: help bug in flash Posted August 18th, 2008 in Game Development

You probably have some sort of for or while loop that isn't written properly.
Did you use any loops in your script?

It happens a lot.

Yeah, I was having the same problem with bots that didn't evade very well, so I kind of over-worked my new shotgun. It looks pretty ridiculous, and I think I geared it a little too much towards taking out still bots.

it looks really weird. kinda like: >-o-<

It seems that a lot of people are using BitmapData to check to see if drawn lines intersect with their bots. But why not simply take the distance between your bot and the bullet, and then project a point along the bullet's path exactly that far from the bullet, and if that point hits your bot, move out of the way. Wouldn't be virtually the same, but without having to use BitmapData?

That's what I did, and doesn't seem to lag at all.

That's not to say that my bullet-gridding system doesn't lag a crapload. =P

But, in Canada, you have to drink Perrier (tastes like soap water >.< ,) say "Eh?" after every sentence, and watch "Mounties" waltz around in parks and gardens wearing oompa-loompa pants and picking up garbage.

I did not mean a word of what I just said.... (well, maybe the Perrier part....) and I have nothing against Canada or its Mounties, I was just trying to make a funny reply. Really, I love your maple syrup! Please don't flame me.
Wait, do mounties still exist, or is that just an old stereotype?

I'd name it the Enterprise, and stick two huge poles out to the side. Then, when sailing, everyone would have to call me "Kirk" and speak-in-be-tween-choppy-breaths.

Actually, the United States technically gives Britain all of the products developed in Silicon valley, so you can thank the US for Adobe CS3.

Plus, Isn't NG stationed in the US? I'm not sure.

I've seen a lot of people delete, then resubmit flashes that got caught up in the clock-day flood. People usually accept this violation of the portal rules.

but no really good artist would be dumb enough to submit a true masterpiece today. :3

P.S. Happeh clock day! <(^_^)>

Response to: AS Wars: Trifecta Posted August 14th, 2008 in Game Development

Jeez, Claxor. I don't know how you got it right, but whenever I try to snap the bullets' trajectories to a grid (using line based math and such) it NEVER works quite right. My current system (the last of like, 4 tries) lags like molassas in an igloo... When this bot war is over, could you please tell me how you did it for your last bot?

Cuz I'm so dumb I can't decipher what your code is doing half of the time... >___________>

Three men. One of whom practices his trade day after day, with extreme care and precision he swiftly performs his craft, never aspiring for higher stature as he knows his service to mankind is small but a vital one at that; another trains and conditions his body with vigor and determination, so that it may serve him in the field of battle to defend his homeland without fail, until his dying breath upon that field. The last is one among many, a man who does not know where his future lies and does not have any hope for things to come, he has endured the racking mental hardships of shear mediocrity his entire life. The last is the modern man, he looks upon the other two in awe at what they have achieved for themselves, never knowing he has endured hardships greater than both, and endured without any admiration or praise.

You need to be careful of what you're asking. It almost sounds like you're one of those obnoxious idiots always posting in the flash forum, "Hai gaiz, how cans I make a popular flash without any effort at all. OLOLOL."

</ranting>

But people tend to vote higher on flashes that have well-written comedic dialog even if the skill of the animation is a little bit lax. I would try doing something like that.
