Just stopped in to thank you guys for the tips and advice.

I ended up spending a little extra dough though for the Q9550. Decided to draw the line there instead of going all out with the I7. I figure the price/performance ratio will only get better in the next few years.

Thanks for the pointer, that would have totally fugged up my order and delayed the build.

Thanks for any/all comments and suggestions guys.

Ok guys... I need a word with you knowledgeable folk about a few points that are bugging me.

I'm currently on a Pentium D 3.4, 8600GT 1BG GDDR2, 3GB rig... I guess it's O.K, runs your average game on medium settings, blazes through your average daily demands. I've noticed the aging of my CPU especially when it comes to Direct X10 games. Bottom line: I've gotten the itch to buy a new rig.
Now come the questions.

1- Is it preferable to wait until the fabled Windows 7 release? Is this new OS such a vast improvement over Vista?

2- Direct X 11 GPU's are right around the corner, is it really worth waiting? Is this another revolutionary advance? NVidia or ATI? Why?

3- AMD? Intel? Which would deliver more bang for my buck? Do I really need a quad core machine to be future safe for the next 2 years? Has the gaming market swiched to fully utilize multiple cores? The waiting game can be played indefinitely with PCs... I'm sorta getting impatient.

I'm not looking for a "hardcore" rig. No fancy pants cases, no SLI or crossfire... no need for a HD over 320 gigs. I'd like for it to fluidly run games such as Diablo 3, Battlefield: Bad Company, and whatever MMORPG that strikes my fancy. No absolute need for ultra high settings.

I've got a good buddy who's a pro at assembly, so that part's covered.
Can I get something decent out for 1000 CAN$ (before taxes)?

Thanks for all and any adice guys. It's really appreciated.

Military ammo is cheap? Look at how the price of 5.56 Nato has increased as of late. The thought makes me a little less sloppy when I bring the AR-15 to the range, though.

Haha, you're nothing but a tool of the media. You're probly one of those protestors in Oregon who burned an effigy of a soldier chanting "it's not just Bush, it's soldiers too". At least I have respect for the soldiers, rathar than do what you people do which spit in their faces.

Don't associate me with bleeding heart opponents of the war. I simply don't look highly upon incompetence of that caliber. We're showing those Iraqis too much mercy, is all I'm saying.

If you're such a lover of the current state of things, then why not throw yourself into the fray? Would you feel comfortable placing your life in the hands of such weak-kneed leadership? Would you die for the sake of some devil-worshiping muslims?

Also, I find it funny in a sad way that South Africa, one of the regional powers of sub-saharan african nations was dominated by whites throughout most of it's history.

Even more disenchanting is the fact that once the blacks will be granted control ( I suppose the whites will finally relinquish after enough of them end up raped and gutted with machetes) it will slink comfortably back into the prevalent african standard: mediocrity.

The nature of the attack is not a shock to me. The fact that it occurred in the "green" Zone—the heart of American support—and in the Iraqi Parliament (the beacon of hope for that country's future) is what shocks, and perhaps bothers me.
And it shouldn't. After all, it's you guys who keep complaining about how "war-torn" it is no matter what the progress. Also, only 1 person died, and the only real mess was of the cafe.

Wow.. Discrediting an attack of this importance and potential magnitude shows how much of a tool you really are. If the sheer fact that the stronghold of the American presence in Iraq was so easily violated doesn't phase you at all, you're clearly beyond any measure of reason.

I see my comments, perhaps overly contained, were misinterpreted. I feel that we western nations are wasting our time in being overly indulgent. Supplanting a government is one thing, but altering entrenched ideology is a colossal endeavor.

This was no orchestrated coup d'etat..but a failed conquest.

If you want to crush the will of an enemy nation, at least do it right.

The harm has been done, but many pig-headed leaders still refuse to lose face and admit that this is a hopeless task. We're not making any friends over in that cesspool of barbarism, so why not actually BECOME the demons they make us out to be?

Love it or hate it.. We're at war.

America needs to pull out.. Westerners shedding blood to "save" the middle east is a folly in itself. What more proof do we need that enlightenment is beyond the intellectual and moral scope of these people? I can't help but evoke the metaphor of the animal that would shit in it's own bed.

Couldn't we possibly be content in destroying/containing the threat of extremism WITHOUT so much wasted humanitarianism? Some of our own people are poverty stricken, lacking in education and struck by the bane of various illnesses. This whole middle eastern venture (Afghanistan/Iraq) is a waste of resources, period.
